I adore that black knotted sisil! Is that hard to make? I am a new milliner probably intermediate. I find the sisils are quite expensive. Any tips on what suppliers for them? I do use judith m and leko.

WOW! I'm new to hat making and I have tried two different types of straw. Neither one would stretch to fit my boater hat block. Do you have any recommendations for natural straw capelines that would stretch like this?

I agree, the trim does visually 'cut' the hat and distract from the hat. I LOVE the striped one!! I am totally going to make a couple this weekend!

I love the berets you made. I really want to make a little 1930s/40s type of hat that sits on the back of the head with a little rounded brim, but outwards as opposed to the berets. I keep looking for patterns but can never see what I am looking for. Its so annoying when you have an idea in your head but dont have the vocabulary to describe it!

Thats the kind of oatmeal we have at home in Scotland. We soak it overnight for a better result in the morning. I think those porridge oats people buy are partially cooked and thats why. Also our oats in Scotland (we are in the Highlands kinda between Aberdeen and Inverness and it may differ elsewhere) have the oat bran still in. So its better for you. I love the look of that flower too, I am going to try to make a poppy or peony type bloom to see how it comes out. I think between the FabriTac and the fact that I cover everything with a coat of sealant, it should remain relatively mould free. Its water that causes all the problems. (That sounds weird, Obviously I dont seal hats etc. But I do miniatures and use coriander or silantro? to make moss and for vegetation in dioramas. When I use anything plant based that may go off, I tend to seal it really well just to be on the safe side.)

I have been looking everywhere for a hat to wear for Easter. Its sad that hats can't be found 😕

You've still got beautiful blonde hair, I havent gone gray yet either, I am 64 on my birthday and although theres grays in amongst my hair it doesnt look gray yet. Not even at the sides, my Mum had much darker hair than I do and she had only really started to go gray at the sides when she passed away at 71. Funnily enough though my sister, 5 years my junior who had even darker hair than my Mother, just about black, has been noticeably gray for a few years now. I think people with very black hair often do go gray quicker but she hennas her hair now. When I was a kid I used to dye mine but not for over 15 years now, its become a point that I havent, now my peers are all going white lol. Mum never dyed hers and I think it runs in mums side of the family too as most of my Great Aunts (very close Scottish family) and maternal Grandmother were all very young looking and kept the gray at bay. Youre the same. I was astonished when you gave your age as I thought you were probably in my age group. I am going to buy some white sinamay because its really versatile and I want to get the feel for it. If hat making looks like its going to be a lifelong hobby I may purchase a block but in the meantime I will look out for houshold objects to block on and perhaps try making one of those insulating foam ones. I am really enjoying your channel and between yourself and Sarah at SH millinary, you are the best teachers on KZfaq!

I hear that my bloodgroup seems to come from the Basque area. Apparently the highest incidence of Rhesus Negative Blood is in the Basque people. They say its because we either come from CroMagnon man or Atlantis (I dont know, all I know is that it doesnt make me an alien and its a pest as you have to be in the vicinity of a large hospital if youre thinking of having a baby or an accident!). Personally I love berets, they are the type of hat I have worn the most (along with those red and black lumberjack things with ears in the Scottish winter). I do also occasionally put on a pillbox or a cloche and I love those floppy ones like your gardening hat because you can do so much with them (although my Dad used to say I looked like Gabby Hayes but I am slightly too young to know for sure lol! I'm close behind you at 64 though! You dont look anything like your age...I think its because you have a youthful attitude and that keeps you young). Since moving to London I can wear hats more because in Scotland the wind tend to steal them.

Although my face is the same shape as yours, I did cut my hair into a vintage middy so I can pin curl it. When its nice and curly this style looks way better than it does if my hair is just flat. It definately needs a bit of volume in the hair to look right on me.

So its one big loop made into a small one and the big one? I do have a lot of wire but need to get some sprung millinary wire for this. Its a genius way to secure hats! Thank you!

This is brilliant. I do need more clothespins and binder clips because theyre both useful. I think the binder clips are better on finer fabrics and wire, where its thinner, and clothespins on bowls and thicker items. I am loving the series! Why not indeed!

I am really enjoying your series, as you no doubt noticed, I went back to your first and am working my way forward, which seems logical to my ancient brain!. Theres a shop on eBay (in the UK, or at least theres a UK branch) called Petershams, it sells just about everything you need (unsure about blocks) for hat making and, quite a few vintage items. I discovered it through Sarah from SH millinary on here. I loved some vintage crochet straw or sinimay? but its way above my experience level, that she used to make a gorgeous navy pillbox. I am using houshold items and things I have at present, until I see how this hobby goes. Your glass bowls are exactly what I mean. I do need to get more clothes pins or binder clips though.

I love these hats you make! I am subscribed to 3 UK millinary channels and yours suddenly appeared and your hats are gorgeous. I dont own any blocks and wont buy any until I see how much I get into hat making. If it turns out to be just occasionally, I could probably get by with some nicely shaped bowls and flat pattern hats. We will see, but I do know that I love me a nice hat! I think you model these hats really well! I have similar bone structure (or face shape? whichever) to you so this is super, seeing the hats on you gives me a good idea of how they would look on me. I love the Kentucky Derby one and I really love your "gardening and dogwalking" hat. I always used to have a hat in roughly this shape because a)it suits my face and b) you can do so many things with it!
