I wasn't expecting to cry here, since I already knew the story from a let's play years ago... but 2:39 just hit different. Anya was there since the start of the game. It was there for Johnny and River through their adult and sick years, as they looked off to the other lighthouses they'd hoped to meet. And it practically got forgotten about since most of the memories are before they come to Anya. So after the long journey to get them to the lighthouses in the sky, seeing Anya's light shining up from the ground with the music shifting back to piano, almost like it was reaching out to Johnny one last time to say goodbye... even now it's enough to break me.

I just played this game for the first time. I had always heard great things about the story, and it lived up to the hype. The gameplay may be lacking, but the story is amazing. One of the best examples of video games being an art form. Thank you to the creators for this masterpiece of a game

I must say I've never considered this until now, but is it possible that John and River on the log again as children with the white background is not a simple flashback, but actually the two of them being reunited in the afterlife? So even though she died thinking he forgot their first meeting, they were able to meet again and relive it?

I randomly thought of coming back here and challenged myself not to cry at the ending but the moment I heard the flat line from the heart monitor, I burst into tears. This is absolutely beautiful and one of a kind.

I remember the first time I heard that flatline. I was tensed up because I knew this was the end and we were seeing this man’s final moments. When he flatlined, my eyes closed and my head dropped.

This game was really touching. I teared up multiple times. But I noticed something strange. At 1:06, why does it look like there's another Neil standing underneath Neil and Eva? Combined with the post-credits scene of this game, it seems to imply that we're dealing with memories inside memories. In other words, while the game was about Eva and Neil altering John's memories, it seems like the entire game itself is just one long memory inside Neil's mind.

@@thegrandnil764 You're not wrong at all. At the end of the day, Johnny was kind of terrible, and nothing could change the fact that the "real" River still ultimately died heartbroken, betrayed, and alone. That being said, though... I still think this ends up being extremely effective. (And that this is a fantastic sci-fi premise with tons of potential.)

I have a theory.... SPOILER in the post credit scene there was a hint that the whole time Neil and Eva and this case was just a memory since the screen blinked red like how they dived into John's memory and everytime John had his health failing it blinked red. What if the ending that we got in "To the Moon" is just a memory revised to get the ideal outcome? What if the reality of Johnny and River's case is that they never erased River in Johnny's memory?? What if the "To the Moon" ending that we got is what Neil's regrets and Eva is the one modifying his memories????

The saddest part can be that his memory doesn't exist anymore. River from the starship, and the visions of living their life until the good days of old just weren’t true. Everything was just an anima he saw in her, before they started dating. The question is if the true happiness and sense of accomplishment are something we could possibly achieve alone, without the presence of the ones we care about. They may be nothing more than projections of our dreams, imposed on imperfections, which makes them real humans. They too struggle with their own issues, just like us. John spends his time after River’s death in search of answers, yet the answers were inside him all along. Change made by dr Eva removed the true reason for what he wanted go th the Moon, what made the whole wish meaningless, but he still enjoyed it.
