At the end of the day, Johnny was kind of terrible, and nothing could change the fact that the "real" River still ultimately died heartbroken, betrayed, and alone. That being said, though... I still think this ends up being extremely effective. (And that this is a fantastic sci-fi premise with tons of potential.)

The saddest part can be that his memory doesn't exist anymore. River from the starship, and the visions of living their life until the good days of old just weren’t true. Everything was just an anima he saw in her, before they started dating. The question is if the true happiness and sense of accomplishment are something we could possibly achieve alone, without the presence of the ones we care about. They may be nothing more than projections of our dreams, imposed on imperfections, which makes them real humans. They too struggle with their own issues, just like us. John spends his time after River’s death in search of answers, yet the answers were inside him all along. Change made by dr Eva removed the true reason for what he wanted go th the Moon, what made the whole wish meaningless, but he still enjoyed it.

It implies they met in the afterlife at 4:36

I absolutely agree. this story deserves to be accessible by everyone. people complain about video game movies, but hollywood just chooses the wrong movies to adapt. probably because of brand recognition

Honestly, it's probably the only videogame that could earn an Oscar for Best Picture if done right. The story has a Titanic feeling to it.

I'd like to point this out and I know I am late, but this theory is generally wrong. (HEAVY SPOILERS FOR IMPOSTOR FACTORY) Neil has the same genetic disorder that killed his mother Lynri. He presumably takes these pills to treat the disorder or at least stop the pain. He is already in bad shape because *his disorder could go malignant and kill him at any time.* The red flash indicates that the disorder may be flaring up at that time.

not to mention that Eva remove the meaning toward's Johnny's reason as to why he wants to go to the moon. Like in their childhood, they promised each other if they got lost they would regroup on the moon. Johnny's subconscious remembered. Johnny lost River, that's why he wants to go to the moon, to be with River again. Removing River removed all meaning to John's wish. John's wish, going to the moon, literally meant being with River.

The memories were constructed using John’s beliefs. I guess he just believed the space shuttle was able to get to the moon.

Umm no. As it turns out there was no better ending. Johnny never wanted to go to the moon until River died, and he never gained the motivation to go to the moon after Eva removed her from his memory. His desire to go to the moon was based entirely on his desire to see River again, and the reason he didn't make it in the end is because he never connected with River, not until maybe the very end where they can both be seen as young kids sitting on a log. The tragedy in this is that River died before any of her efforts were ever realised.
