What an absolute waste of time. The fundamental question they should have asked themselves right up front is "why are they there?". What's the basic issue that they are seeking to respond to and/or deal with that's of prime concern to the so called 'populists' who are fighting back? That simple question relates of course to 'climate change', aka global warming or CAGW if you will & the whereabouts of the empirical evidence that proves the case against beyond doubt that CO2 is a pollutant & is the primary driver of so claimed CAGW, aka climate change. There is none. It's nothing more than an hypothesis, built upon flawed, unproven models that do NOT constitute empirical evidence. CO2 is a minuscule, invisible, odourless, tasteless atmospheric trace gas necessary for life on this planet. That's why the so called 'populists' are up in arms & it's spreading globally. Have you not seen the most recent push back against this madness? Presumably not. Do yourselves a favour & go Google; 1. CO2 The Good Gas. (just 3m:24s) 2. Climate the Movie. (80 mins) 3. CO2 Famine (2m:21s) 4. www.Extinctionclok.org You might learn something, though if past experience is any guide, I doubt it..

Maybe the Chinese have figured out that GDP growth is not the correct metric - how much US gdp is deficit spending and wealth transfer from the middle class to the 1%?

May I help with respect to question re forecast Chinese OFDI of 1.4 trillion now thru 2028 / 5 = 280 billion per year...still plausible but a touch higher than the quick estimate given in Q&A session...rgds.

This whole presentation is very risky being based on questioning Chinese statistics. I am not at all convinced by the charts provided. In the type of planned economy that China has, if its GDP ifigure was so false it would cause chaos throughout its planning and policy framework. And would threaten the future credibility of its whole economic reporting system. This is a massive assumption that we should not be so eager to adopt. I prefer to look at what is happening in individual sectors. And here China seems to be making rapid progress in technology and penetration of markets in so many industries. And this ties in with current government strategy of switching to more value production.

Have you been paying attention to ANY of the societal and economic trends going on right now inside the PRC? "Lying Flat"? Cancelling of youth unemployment updates? White Paper and "I have nothing to say" protests? Bank withdrawal freezes? Bankruptcy of the second largest property developer and threats of bankruptcy from the top developer? Demographic and marriage registration collapse? Your so-called "rapid progress" chimera is exactly what we should be DOUBTING. With PLENTY of reason.

Thank you very much, Daniel H. Rosen from Rhodium Group for these breaking insights about the slowdown of Chinese economy. Appreciate the methods of Rhodium Group looking for the basic data instead of Goverment's aggregated figures. Mindblowing diagrams! Even nobody can predict China's way we all have to change our assumptions und strategies.

Italians are not happy because they are staring into a wall of debt. And that is the main reason why the EU is not going to integrate further. No sane person in Northern Europe will pay the bill that the Italians, French and Spanish have run up.

"How should democracies deal with illiberal states?" Demonstrate some humility and recognize the illiberal aspects of so-called, quote unquote democracies. Recognize all the limitations of US democracy. Recognize the severe problems with the US presidential system that combines the head of state and the head of government in the same person. Recognize that well-defined, secure economic property both individual and collective is an ideal that democracies strive for. Recognize that Americans as well as others have been socialized from an early age to glorify ethnic cleansing and terrorism. Recognize that American political elites have evolved a culture of deliberately deceiving and lying to both fellow citizens and non-Americans and that these norms constantly jeopardize the smooth working of democracy. (The Tragedy of truth-telling.) Recognize that authoritarian regimes share many of the features of modern liberal democracies such as disproportionately influential constituencies and special interest groups. Recognize that both liberal democracies and authoritarian regimes experience significant difficulties coping with social dilemmas.

Summers does not know game theory??? if peace is net positive for both players and war is net negative for also both players, there won't be a war. economics is positive sum game because there is no reason to trade if one players outcome is negative. another words, in economics both party must agree to trade. otherwise there is no trade. thats not the case for politics, one side could be thinking war can be won quickly and start a war. the other party MUST react.

It was cheaper for China to buy reliable Western chips, benefiting both sides. China spends more on chip imports than on oil. The sanctions prompted China to invest in its own supply chain. Local manufacturers are now more willing to use the perceived less reliable local chips. When self-sufficient, China can provide the world with cheaper chips, while the West and its allies lose access to both the Chinese and global markets. The US is developing its own supply chain, but without access to a large market, it cannot be competitive. The US is leaving no knees untouched in its Tonya Harding competition strategy. The Chinese government had very little success in being self-sufficient in technology; they are very grateful to the US for pushing them towards self-sufficiency. Thanks to the US, China now has its own GPS system and space program.

Prof. Rithmire mentioned "over-compliance" multiple times, which I believe is a very important point, unique in China, and quite often bring about negative effects on government policies. A key weakness in China's system.

Are the things labeled as "unpredictable" basically things you don't understand? For some knowledgeable investors, the "crack downs" on the paid education industry, on the property development industry, on the Internet media companies, were all predictable. Central Government's discontent with these industries were well known before such "crack downs", and most people were well aware of the negative impacts that these industries had on society. Rather than saying policies were "unpredictable", you should say you were not well informed enough to be able to foresee such policy changes. But their enactment really should not be surprises, even if you were not able to predict them.

Taiwan is having Biden and the American people on. Taiwan will never pass the capability on to America - then it knows America will just allow taiwan to be blown up to bits. Hence, I wouldnt be surprised that Taiwan is even funding the Arizona union to protest. ROFL. Prof Chris Miller turned out wrong too on China's chip capability - the level of 'professional' advisers that the american government relies on is atrociously wrong all the time. Arizona will never be feasible and Chris Miller completely wrong yet he is "in" the industry and know. Oh my god.

Give me a break, Xi i a control freak, who thinks the Cultural Rev was a character builder. China has vacant apt buildings that could house the population of France, banks restrict withdrawals, foreign businesses are leaving in droves. The Ray Dalio types have preached that China was to surpass the USA, no way with their current leader!

China is changing as well the world. The political system is changing too, the current USA system proven the decay of the capitalism power controlled by the 1% the elite group but with pretend democracy of everyone can vote... this fake democracy is going to extend to one hundred years as common people are raised and educated this way maintaining this so fake democracy of everyone is voting but actually with no choices of parties trying to represent the working class. So the speaker still embrace the idea of the fake democracy criticizing the China system and still lecture china who has already proven their success lifting 6mllion people out of poverty. But what about us the poverty population is growing... so tell me who is doing good for the working class.

What kind of stupid Dr. is this? I don't think this Chris Miller guy knows anything, or qualified to talk about this topic. It is just one of the stupid so called "analysts" who only reads CNN news. Nothing I don't already know in his talk, and I am just an armature. The things he talked are all at surface level, showed very limited understanding.

作为一个人中国国内观众,我觉得这位教授相对而言,比较客观。即说明了中国的优点以及缺点和中国的实际情况。并不是像其他西方教授一样,只是一味的批评中国。不论他的观察是否正确,最起码认真观察了中国。 As a domestic audience in China, I think the professor is relatively objective. It explains the advantages and disadvantages of China and the actual situation of China. I am not just criticizing China like other western professors. Whether his observation is correct or not, he has at least observed China carefully.
