They are using much, much smaller thermal tiles to avoid the flex-fracture, flex-debond, flex-maceration issues seen in IFT-3. But their lack of thermal shielding expertise continues to astound. The winglets...catch fire? How is any of this supposed to get SpaceX a launch services contract for Starship? How is it supposed to pass smell test with an independent board of directors? When is Elon ever going to give up on those silly winglets?

I find it funny the feud between Elon and the billionaire is a shocker. Timing is clearly not the issue. It's Elon's rhetoric.

What we learned is: This thing is not designed properly. Wings... lot's of fun, not practical. This time they burned through, likely all 4. Go with thrusters. They work, don't need to move, proven reliable, less drag, lighter..... They should swallow their pride and say it. Wings are out. The tiles need work too.

I want to hear the sounds of this! Do they have any microphones on the ship? I'm sure contact microphones could provide some useful engineering data, especially if there are multiple, allowing them to localize audible impacts/damage. I wonder what it would sound like to ride through reentry inside this ship (whenever they add pressurized crew space, that is)

If we see this Galaxy this far out in one direction, will we see other galaxy's in the other directions, and be able to determine the actual center of the beginning? Then How far are we from the center, why is there no universe map of al these findings.

Watching this live on youtube was an emotional rollercoaster! The flap starting to go then the camera being obscured so many of us thought it was over but then noticed there was still telemetry and you could still somewhat see through whatever debris was on the camera. At the end when the camera cleared and the flap was still there I gasped and so did others. I really didn't think it would make that soft landing but far exceeded expectations.

Ya know Marcus, if you ever, for whatever reason, stop making videos every week I'm gonna need some major lead time to prepare. I just realized tonight, (I guess it's really 1.31am Sunday morning here in the Rockies), that I have become so accustomed to watching you every weekend. I got hooked on your enthusiasm a couple years, or so, ago. I love all the space "stuff" just like you. And you make my life a little easier by covering some of it so I don't have to look it all up. You feel like a really good friend or maybe even a distant cousin. You keep makin' 'em and I'll keep watchin' 'em! Peace Out Brother, I'll catch ya next week.

Seeing the James Webb telescope images of all of those galaxies, which are but from a small point in the sky, is incredible. Galaxies are massive, and there are billions in every direction that we can see, like it’s no big deal. How is this reality possible? Humans will probably never leave the Milky Way because the distances are just too great, never mind just reaching our nearest galaxy, Andromeda. Even if you know something about the science behind it, it still boggles the mind!

During my career as a structural aerospace engineer I remember reading in Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine about a 'new' steel/skin material developed in Japan that had a melting temperature around 3000 degree F. I don't know if this ever got produced in commercially available quantities. BUT if it could be produced in even small quantities at low enough cost it could be used for the bolts, fittings, stringers and other structural elements at the base of the control flaps. It was painful but extrememly exciting to see these FLAP joints 'hang in there'!!!!! KUDOS to the structural designers of that joint structure!!!! ELON NEEDS TO GIVE YOU A BONUS and probably a raise!!! LMAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😝😝😝😝😝

Some Engineering comments on IFT 4. It would be so cool if we could have IFT 5 Ship deploy (in space orbital coast phase of flight) three or four specialized/modified Starlink satellites that would 'chase, photograph, and video record' Ship in orbit and at re-entry. This would allow a complete visual picture of Ship during re-entry could be analyzed along with other telemetry data. A couple of these 'chase spacecraft' would have ablative 'nose cone or aerodynamic shaped, ablative, heat shields and follow Ship through re-entry to visually record flip and soft landing at least until IFT 6 when that will happen and definitely be visually recorded at Starbase. lol

I just wanted to post a view comments and ideas/suggestions relating to the recent SpaceX Starship IFT 4. This was exciting beyond description for me (and millions of nerds and Aerospace engineers)!!!!! We are so lucky to see humans finally leave the earth system (to Mars and beyond!!!) It is truly the FINAL Frontier and I think space pioneers will be remembered as the most important and consequential generation of this millennium.

One thing the press seems to keep forgetting to mention about Sunita Williams is the fact that she is a former ISS COMMANDER. They seem to act like she is just a very experienced astronaut, but she was a COMMANDER. I have seen not a single press release that mentions that fact. Both Butch and Sunni are truly exceptionally experienced astronauts.

The cancellation of Dear Moon was inevitable. The Japanese billionaire had taken some financial hits lately, and now he is barely in the billionaire club. (But socially clueless Elon unfollowing the Dear Moon Billionaire is just typical of his sociopathic tendencies to see others as tools. Three Dog Night said it best "........'specially people who care about strangers. who care about evil and social injustice. Do you only care about the bleeding crowd? How about a needing friend?....") The concept of a crewed-version of Starship will only happen when SpaceX faces the hard fact that cargo and crew need to be on separate vehicles. The need for crew safety and abort systems would put massive pressure on the cargo capacity of the vehicle. We will never see a "When Worlds Collide" Ark-type rocket. I envision at least 6 different versions of Starship - Cargo, Crew-to-LEO, Tanker, HLS, Interplanetary Transport, and finally ballistic infra-Earth transport. (Likely they will need 2 versions of ballistic transport - one for passengers and one for cargo.) When test pilots fly on the first crewed-Starship, NASA will pressure SpaceX to have a complete crew-safety system capable of abort from all phases of ascent, and perhaps even from orbit. (We don't want one of those Columbia type situations where the crew is on orbit with damaged tiles that will certainly kill them on re-entry.) I envision either B-58 bomber type crew ejection capsules complete with parachute recovery systems, communication beacons, and re-entry heatshield. Don't envy those dudes for the G-forces of that ballistic re-entry though... whew....but better than dying in orbit or burning up. The other option is to put the crew in a shielded capsule at the tip of the Starship that can be separated from the "second stage" part of Starship with the fuel tanks. That capsule would be a simple affair with just enough equipment to initiate and survive a re-entry if required, parachutes to break the fall in a water landing, and communication equipment to help in locating the vehicle. It would float on water and also have first aid supplies and lifeboat food in case recovery takes a few days. This idea also has the advantage of keeping everyone together and you could put shielding below the crew to protect them from a fuel tank explosion a la Challenger. Such a crewed-Starship could likely carry even more passengers than the original idea because it won't need to carry years and years of supplies for living on Mars. The interplanetary version could launch with all the supplies and equipment and empty cabins. Then after all the tanker flights to get the propellant depot filled up, it would be followed by the crewed Starship which would dock with it to upload the passengers for the Mars journey.

Awesome spectacle! My question is, both the booster as well as the starship should be floating somewhere in the Pacific now. I would be surprised if someone maybe Space X themselves, do not go pick this up or tow it back. Or would they use the self destruct to blow it apart to sink?

Are brain implants legal? Is a human recall treated like a Tesla failure recall for numerous accidents and fatalities? Fail and have the cheek to ask for 55.8B? American man then stabs 6-year-old Palestinian boy 26 times. 54 years after Apollo 11, SpaceX blew up two unmanned rockets. My neighbours blew up two unmanned rockets last week.
