It has been over a week since Starship’s Flight Test 3 and since then we’ve had loads of opportunity to analyze more of that groundbreaking flight. What about flight test 4 coming up though? Yes, I’ve already got updates on that as we watch SpaceX rip back into action to prepare for all of that madness. Wow, SpaceX's Frantic Push to Launch the Next Starship Mission is Nuts! Along with all this though, it’s been super busy outside Starship Development in Texas, so hold on tight because we have yet another gigantic week.

Question. Why are the grid fins scalloped?

On the arms. They need a separate landing area, from a launching area. If the ship hard lands, it doesn't take out all the extra things needed for launch such as fuel supply. It's far simpler. They already move the ships around easily.

There is the possibility that "POCKN" is in fact "ROSKI" (which of course is close to, but not the same as, "Russian"), assuming of course the "POCKN" is Cyrillic.

@MarcusHouse - my theory is they are going to buildout the second launch tower and chopsticks with no OLM or ground equipment on it as a "development" tower to test catching the booster, so if it misses and fails, it doesn't blow up the original "production" launch tower.

The Falcon rocket family has achieved everything the Shuttle was designed to achieve, yet failed to do so. Multiple launches per week, payload-to-orbit costs have plummeted, it can launch satellites and humans, can rendezvous with the ISS, etc. The cadence of Falcon launches we're seeing is what we were supposed to see with Shuttle. Crazy to imagine.

It hasn’t. A key requirement of the shuttle was to return large objects to earth. That is why it was so big. And so dangerous.

Only thing it is lacking is the ability to return things to earth. Shuttle could grab things like satellites and bring them into the payload bay before de-orbiting.

I would say it rather obvious they're not catching the booster anytime soon. Like you mention, the likelyhood of destroying stage 0 is huge. They would want perfect landings on the perfect coordinates in the sea first.

That was clear from the getco. I am pretty sure that first attempt will be when second tower become online. Not necessary full second launchpad, as launch table is really complicated, and also second tank farm etc. I think they will push on finishing tower first, for first attempt. But actually I think progress it's pretty good. At least one engine fired properly, and I think there is few variations of raptors mounted on test articles, (on s24 was confirmed that raptors were different from each other in minor details, not sure about recent one, but it's logical that SpaceX will test several variations of equipment that couldn't be tested otherway, like ignition hardware) Additionally they need adjust software against real life results. I am sure attitude control on next IFT will be much better, but they will still not nail proper ignition next time. They will just perform BETTER than this time

@@szkoclaw dokładnie. Current pricing is about 90mln for production of full stack, with 18mln for ship alone. One launch (excluding refurbishment/repairs of stage0) is about 100 mln. It's very cheap for that class of rocket. Even with standard ratio of 250% above cost it will superheavy launcher in cost of heavy launcher (maybe fh would be cheaper, but less capable).

Yes totally! Boeing would do well to pay SpaceX a bunch of money to help them re-learn QC, don't you think? I remember back in late 70s Toyota was in big trouble cuz their cars were garbage and noone was buying them. So they paid Ford a shitton of money to go to Japan and teach them how to build a dependable car that Americans would want. The result was the Toyota Carolla Tercel SR5. In 85 I bought an 81 model with all those nameplates on it. A Ford 289, C4, and 9 inch would bolt right in with no changes to the chassis. Great little car! would be cool to see a Boeing Carolla Tercel SR 797 lol.

The best engineers aren't perfect. Some governance models, expecting perfection at every step, look to blame, then define additional processes to ensure perfection and boost quality controls to ensure compliance. Resource is far better spent defining test targets for subsequent iterations with accurate test data. SpaceX’s use of 4K cameras provides utility, beyond mere publicity. Proof is in the pudding. Each IFT shows remarkable improvement.

quick release undergoing some serious overhaul at the moment, not sure extent of refurb, but spacex is going over it carefully, im wondering if the flex pipes need a metal mesh covering, just thinking out aloud, they already have an interior mesh covered by foil of some sort, so not really sure whats going on there. i heard the final roll of flight 3 was a 'test to destruction', would fit with spacex thinking of 'fail fast, fail hard'

@just_archan
@just_archan 2 ай бұрын
@@SciFlyGalI think this will be equally problematic, as SpaceX is testing multiple issues, so they don't know exactly in WHAT moment it would fail. Ie SpaceX didn't tried to add to test soft touchdown of ship itself. So they at least suspect that ship could theoretically passed re-entry. So if they expect that Starship would NOT be destroyed during re-entry, they have to trigger self-destruction

Thanks for answering these viewer questions about IFT-3. I noticed on both IFT-2 and IFT-3 that there was a very dark brown/orange streak in the Booster exhaust right after lift-off. Since the raptor engines, unlike the Merlin engines, don't throw partially burnt RP-1 from a turbo-pump overboard, I did not expect this. Initially, I thought this was another case of SpaceX having engine rich exhaust, but it didn’t seem to negatively affect the booster, which only failed much later. Do you know what is causing this effect?
@nikolayageenko
@nikolayageenko 2 ай бұрын
Most likely a combination of A) nitrogen oxides from atmospheric nitrogen reacting with oxygen under extreme exhaust temperatures as the air is mixed and entrapped in the exhaust flow B) a slight amount of soot can be formed from methane combustion too Its also possible to have some nitrogen contaminants in the methane maybe? I'm pretty sure the methane is a way cleaner burn than kerosene in regards to both nitrogen content in the fuel and soot production. Maybe (speculation, cause i dont feel like googling stuff) the initial tank pressurization is done with nitrogen before the autogenous system kicks in, and some nitrogen gets dissolved in the liquid methane. I know for sure that aviation kerosene on Russian planes contains some amount of nitrogen which (again in combination with the although lower but still high temperature) produces the same kind of trail often when taking off with afterburner on (look up tu-160 takeoffs for example)
@plainText384
@plainText384 2 ай бұрын
@nikolayageenko I initially also thought about atmospheric nitrogen, but I'm not entirely convinced. If you look at a Delta IV Heavy launch, this effect is not visible at all (as far as I can tell). I mean, it could still be a result of atmospheric nitrogen, maybe Starship and Delta IV Heavy aren't comparable for the purposes of NOx production, after all, I don't know much about the chemistry involved. But your other theories were new to me. Thanks for your input 👍

There will be many interesting challenges such as how one pad will handle both landings, what to do if you have a landing issue with the first landing (booster), what kind of inspections they can complete between a launch and booster return, etc. I would also like to see information about the Florida Starship launch facility. Is Spacex going to build exclusively at Boca and then return launches in FL?

It might be, that not only some valves had problems on the second stage of the SpaceX' rocket, but also one of the main tanks had some major leaks as well. In my past, I was designing, manufacturing and testing lots of vacuum components with welds, which is one of the critical topics in vacuum-related applications. Ideally, one was trying to avoid welded connections, but if there was no way around, rigorous testing was always necessary, as there were always some surprises to expect. From that perspective, when observing the flow pattern of seemingly leaking gas, it looks like some welds have given in and emitted the gas at some angle - causing a rotating moment.

The tower and chopsticks needs less refurbishment with each launch. The QD arm connector plate was buckled and disconnected after the November launch, this time it looks mostly intact. A few cables and hoses are damaged but they could add stronger shrouds on the hoses for the next launch. Also this is the prototype tower. There's rumours of another water deluge upgrade to spray water on the OLM itself to protect it from the rocket exhaust. We don't know what future upgrades will be made to future towers. this was an informed comment from reddit

Overall IFT3 was a great success, but they are going to have to stick a few soft landings in the ocean before they even consider any catches with the tower arms. I would suggest that it will be at least 5-6 more launches before they even start to look at a catch. Maybe they will add some legs and do a land landing before they attempt a catch. Either way, it is great to see the progress with each flight. I already can't wait for IFT4!

I would't characterize the Starship's motion during re-entry as 'roll'. The ship was tumbling out of control. Maybe the liquid fuel & oxidizer were slowly sloshing in their tanks, that could easily explain the apparently changing rotational axes.

In re the sudden liberation, a minute or two before Starship's entry began, of a number of heat shield tiles (and some non-tile structures, like what looked like pieces of the insulation material installed between the skin and the underside of the tiles), I recall at the time it happened that the feed I was watching had an audio feed from the SpaceX control center. Now, that feed lets you hear a lot of reactions to things happening real-time that we don't have much info about. And JUST before the shower of tiles and such started, I heard a moderately loud reaction I can best describe as meaning "uh-oh!" Or maybe "oh, no!" It really sounded like a reaction to something bad, or surprising and not nominal, happening that was obvious to the people in the control center. They had access to video feeds we weren't seeing, so I assumed that they saw some fairly dramatic event on a forward-facing camera's view, and we saw the resulting debris coming past on the rear-facing camera view that SpaceX was sending out. So, seeing as how the ship had lost attitude control authority already, my guess is that the people we heard groan and exclaim dismay on the feed were watching an "energetic event" happening in or near attitude control vents at the nose of the ship, perhaps relating to the loss of control authority. We'll see exactly what SpaceX releases in the incident report. I will also say that the amount of gas that visibly vented out of the payload bay of the ship when the door was opened seemed to be a lot more than I'd expect from just venting the trapped atmosphere. From how there was almost this waterfall effect of gas flowing from the nose down towards the bay door, I wonder a bit if maybe there was a leak from one or both of the header tanks in the nose. You know, up near where there may have been an energetic event a little later on...? It just has me curious.

Hello Marcus, I just finished watching this weekly update about IFT 3 and your analysis along with Fraser Cain and Scott Manley of the recent flight. I thought both vlogs were great and that you guys really did an awesome job, Thank you! Watching all of that content left me with a couple of questions, though: 1) The "PEZ" door mechanism seems rather large, kind of weak and complex to me. Why aren't they using something like linear bearings and simply sliding the door open? Perhaps with a slight step back to "unseal" the PEZ door first. Typical airliner doors unseal and swing for example. 2) How large are the vents on Starship, approximately? I am having trouble with scale. Thank you very much! I always enjoy your great content!

I have been saying for months the new tower will make the first catch tests. Otherwise why build tower segments? They have not even started the launch platform. They cant damage the only launch tower.

Clever. They just need the tower and draw works, not even the launch mount or tank farm… 👍

to solve the ceramic tile failure (falling off during test/launch/re-entry), I would suggest coating the entire face of Starship's ceramic surface with multiple asbestos/carbon fiber layers (like a wrap). This same proceedure should be performed on all lift off platforms, structures and launch pad (addition of ceramic/asbestos/carbon fiber to all surfaces). Starship's ceramic coating with asbestos/carbon fiber wrap would at least hold the ceramic tiles in place during test/launch/re-entry, potentialy burning off during re-entry but that would be ok, right?

I have a question for any engineers or scientists that are interested. The question is regarding the water deluge system. Is, or could there be, any benefit to surrounding the launch platform with a giant ice cube? They already have the capability to freeze a gigantic volume of water... wouldn't ice be more protective than mere water? Wouldn't it take a great deal more energy to melt ice than to boil water and in the meantime wouldn't all that ice be shielding and insulating the platform? If there is a need for liquid water you could also have piping insinuated through the ice cube to get the water up and out as well...

I keep mentioning a huge aspect regarding Starships payload capability: Yes, the tanks were pretty much empty once in orbit, without any payload, but - both booster and ship were slightly underfueled, and, much more importantly - the booster held the max acceleration to less than 2g. I did the math, at around T+2:00 minutes, the booster thrust was barely above 70%, and it kept decreasing to below 70%. That increased the gravity loss by a lot. The acceleration could have easily been 50% higher at only 20% more thrust. Spacex only does this flight profil, because its pretty much the minimum work the booster can do with the ship still making it into orbit, decreasing loads on the vehicle during first stage flight. MECO velocity could easily be at 8000+km/h with full reusability.

They should build wooden replica structures of the catch towers with arms in a remote location and practise landing the super heavy between the arms just to see hiw accurately they can bring it to a soft stop, obviously the booster and towers will be destroyed on every test but it could give us some good ideas as to whats required for the probability of a successful catch

20:58 I love how the graphics for Rocket Lab’s mission are basically the classic Atari arcade game Lunar Lander. I wonder how many of today’s rocket engineers were inspired by that particular quarter eater.
