I'm a 50-year-old gay man that's been training since 2017 (got my purple belt in March 2023). INEVITABLY when my gay friends find out what Jiu Jitsu ACTUALLY is (most of them hear the word and assume it's some kind of kung fu aerobic weirdness) they go, "Oh my god - that sounds so HOT!!!!" And I'm like, "No. It's not. The warmup is murder, the training is exhausting, and you spend the last hour with some 20-year-old named Candace on your back choking your eyeballs out". LOL! Kidding aside, though, being aroused in training has never been an issue for me. For starters, I've never dated a man younger than 50, so most guys on the mat I won't be the least bit interested in. Second, I just don't find I'm in that head space when I'm training. I can't speak for anyone else but drilling and rolling require a completely different mindset than being...amorous, if you know what I mean. I tell these young fellas that bring it up that they have nothing to worry about because I'm not into younger dudes. In fact, most of my buddies are comfortable enough to crack on me with BRUTAL gay jokes, and I love it! Of course, I tell them if they bring their dads or grandpas in to train, they might as well start calling me "Uncle", because all bets are off. Ha ha! But, seriously. I think anyone who's mature and more or less psychologically healthy should have no problem separating training from flirting. If your impulse control is that bad, you should trade the mats for a therapist's office for a while. Just my two cents.

Im a 3 stripe WB and rolled with a 4 stripe Purple. I was concerned about wasting his time but after drilling and rolling he was thankful that we did. Why? Because he said he like getting the fundamental refresher. Often overlooked but he was forced to break things down more than he normally does.

I suppose it's a different social climate in the U.S, than in Canada, as I'm 57 and I've never been in a position where I needed to physically defend myself (even having lived in NYC for 4 years). I started BJJ for the first time just 6 weeks ago, NOT for self defence, but because it is yet another physical discipline to learn to help become a more well-rounded person. I'm fascinated by the physics and skill involved in the training but, as far as injuries, you are so right. I've only had 5 classes and I've sustained 4 minor injuries already. It does humble you to realize that your limits are much different than 20 years ago.

Excellent point! I would say the healthy benefits of working out are a huge part of self preservation! Just have to be careful as we age to train properly and avoid injuries. Thanks for commenting.

I just enrolled my 4 year old today. He had an assessment to see if he can get in and he passed with flying colors. My son has wrestled with our dog since he was crawling I know he was born for this. I’m really stoked to see what he will learn.

Another great informative video. But shouldn't the student get used to eye contact, especially if it wigs them out. Eye contact is a very important component of communication. But for self-defense applications ... get used to it.

Excited to start. Found a gym by my house. Very nervous. Never been the fastest learner nor most gifted athletically despite my love for sport's. I did wrestling and swim in high school despite my effort, I never won a single match or race. I am looking to do BJJ for confidence, clarity, and exercise, and to have a fun time and live a healthy lifestyle. Would you recommend notify my coach about my nervousness?

I hate feeling embarrassed and being just that one guy everybody knows is garbage. Same when I tried skateboarding. Despite my enjoyment and practice I could not improve.

Brilliant. I've come from a krav maga background and now training in bjj. Just done around 5 classes and it's almost like i have to unlearn aome of my training. That to one side BJJ is a lot more complex than i thought, but I can see why it is so effective and this video just irons out those "silly"questions got don't want to ask in class. Thank you

It is not specified if they are referring to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or normal Jiu Jitsu which in my opinion is more complete .

This spelling (Jiu-Jitsu) , is most typically associated with Gracie or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

@@gracieohioOk , but that is a very subtle difference that only practitioners of that martial art would know about

If someone is looking for Brazilian jiu-Jitsu they will possibly come across this. I think people will figure it out. The title is not meant to be misleading.

Don't do it because you will have injuries that will affect you a lifetime. And if you get into a scrap are you really going to go to the ground and bust up your knees. It's a waste of time and money. Know some wrestling and boxing. It will serve you better if you want self-defense. Just don't take any shots to the head in boxing but come close.
@gracieohioАй бұрын
Have you ever done Jiu-Jitsu? If so, where and for how long?
@surfside16Ай бұрын
@@gracieohio I studied it for about a month and could see the holes in it. No standup, no kicks. And the last thing you want is to go to the ground particularly on concrete. 90% of while belts quit. And if a student gets his blue belt, 90% of them quit. The mat is not the street. And if you want to live with pain from injuries like a neck crank will it be worth it? Incidentally, I am an Army combat veteran. Have you ever been shot at? I have.

That’s not how we train. Jiu-jitsu is a complete martial art, complete with strikes, throws, pins, etc. And thank you for your service. 🙏👊

i dont think that you could even get (or give) a black eye, if practicing correct (present, respectful, intentional, conscious) jiu jitsu. that's not even a target, striking is not the mechanism

I am a young adult and nearly fresh out of HighSchool, I am 5'5" without shoes and only 120 pounds... I have been looking into this because I want to learn some form of self defense for my own protection if I ever needed to use it, that's 1. My 2nd reasoning is because a friend told me I would probably be interested in this and I do find it to be something that I could handle with time. Hoping that once I'm a little older and on my own I can sign up for these classes like once or twice a week. Because of my lightweight and short stature I can't throw a strong punch, My dad has tried to teach me how to throw a punch and I can it just doesn't do anything. He was actually the first person to ever tell me about this. Wasn't until A friend told me I might like it that I really looked into it.

I like the head butt, I see most people curl forward to get away from the sniffer, and that is what he is used to. At first I thought you meant defending why Joe would sniff in the first place.
