A couple questions come to mind from the video: - Any idea what the difference is between the blue and white compounds offered on currycustomcutlery? - Did you say the yellow abrasive cleaning sticks are not helpful with the work sharp system compared to a larger belt sharpening system? A video on how you reduce the bolster with the work sharp (workflow/belt preferences to try to match previous finish?) would be neat. Coming from the wicked edge system I didn’t offer that service in the past, so have a few practice knives I’m getting ready to jump into learning the process. FYI I checked with a digital angle gauge, and the front vs back reference surface were within 0.1 degrees of each other for me which was quite impressive. The rear one seems like less movement to reset reference on the knife (not sure how much you use the front reference edge either though so may not be relevant). Listened to the podcast episodes you did as well, those were neat to hear because i've been on a similar journey, glad to see others are doing the same and making it work!

It's nice to watch how manufacturers try to improve one thing while fucking up another. So they make the angle adjustment faster and easier (what for really? Isn't necessary) while at the same time making it more difficult to access the belt through the shitty plastic cover... You need to change belts more often than the angle... You set the angle for one knife but you change the belts for different grits for one knife... They also made sure you can't use the Mk2 motor with the Mk1 attachment tool... That's so nice of them. That will be one reason I'm sending mine back.
@simplysharpatl22 күн бұрын
@@2lbsTrigrPull I agree the incompatibility is lame. My understanding is the plastic was driven by consumer safety concerns.
@2lbsTrigrPull22 күн бұрын
@@simplysharpatl incompatibility is obviously money making scheme. For the cover and safetey concern... How much older units without the cover did they sell? Also the price here in Europe for the Attachment tool which is basically a cast part with three rollers and a few screws for 120€ is pretty steep. Good product that works no doubt about that but they definitely made sure to squeeze every penny out of it.

I believe the metal clip is there to remove belt slack when you are trying to flat grind useing that surface of the sharpener (like if you want a 90 degree spine)
@Billfish57Ай бұрын
I like the speed control on the first one better because you can make move slower and when I'm using the leather, I like it going as slow as possible, the new one decides for you how slowly you can run it and it's twice as fast as the first one. Digital looks cool but in practice, like with music, digital is not as good as analog. It's not a real problem until you are trying to get the blade as sharp as possible at the end of sharpening.

Tensioner on original also has issue of coming loose so I have to move red pin to tighten again. Lifting the mk2 on side slightly will make it easier and faster to put belt on. On the orginal grinding back plate I have two Leather strops affixed to back so I can grind chips out on blade edge faster and to reshape broken tips. The one on back of mk2 is so you don’t have to put leather strops there as it have flexible piece. It does make it tight to get leather belt in. I tested it last night.

Good job! Seeing the way the guard mounts, you could really get it down to almost nothing, but now at least you've gotten rid of most of the fluff that was interfering. I do see a couple of routes to go with on the thumb lever, but you've probably had enough trauma from this tool surgery for a bit-lol! I'm sure someone will do a 3D print of a super slimed down piece that has the degree markings and uses just one screw, leaving it really open on the side. Now you have a Ken Onion Elite Pro MK2 Work Sharp. I'm super grateful that you showed this mod, because it really gave me a good look at what's in there and how everything works in relation. It's a clever but flawed design and most of that has to do with covering things up so it has a slick look to it. Probably a younger designer that's worked in the auto industry and not familiar with the KISS method of design. Keep It Simple Stupid. As soon as I see one on sale or maybe an open box model, I'll be picking one up. Thanks again!
