We should be able to draw a line on the spring with chalk prior to unwinding.

This isn't advised, Dolphincliffs, because that spring is still under tension. Doing anything to bump the spring around while it's still under tension is never a good idea. That's why we suggest doing it the way that we do, for your safety.

Good video, but you do know you're using the pipe wrenches backwards? Safety first

Hi Christian! Actually, this is the way that the wrenches should be used, as this is the way that they will be braced against the door so that the shaft doesn't go flying, possibly causing the springs to break or other damage. You are able to get the door off of the curtain this way, with the added safety measure of the shaft with the springs being able to catch on the door as you undo it to get to the springs that need to be replaced. Safety first is always a good rule of thumb though, with this being the safest way to do this.
