My boy's feet look like the Grinch and a Wolverine had a baby. I swear I could braid the fur between his pads. But for him to allow me to groom those beasties....well I think I have a better chance of seeing a Leprechaun riding a Unicorn around my living room.

I’ve retired but having been a groomer for 45 years I must say it’s wonderful to see a professional doing a professional job. In all this time I have never been aware of dogs having issues as the hair grows back. I have however discovered some interesting debris imbedded in the soft section of their skin. Amongst gravel causing a huge abscess, amongst other vegetation I’ve pulled out a grass seed on one occasion that oozed puss as I removed it. I squeezed the rest of the puss out until I could see blood, cleaned it properly with antiseptic and the dog was fine. It had to have been causing discomfort to the dog and it wasn’t far from being a trip to the vet. So a professional groomer can save owners money and their dog from the stress of a stranger poking them about. Not to forget it also prevents them from the discomfort in the first place. Well done to the OP, I’m sure you will have done a lot of good with passing on your knowledge and in such clear manner. Bravo

David, can we get that video on doing the front/top of the feet? Nails, too. I groom my fluffballs at home and their feet are a mess. Maybe also some tips on how to get them to CHILL OUT while we groom their feet?

Thanks for the video. I am an amateur groomer but took a community education class. My only warning is too make sure blade doesn’t get too hot so you don’t burn your dog or switch out blade if it is. My friend said she did that to her g dog.

As a 30yr. Professional groomer, I advise against using the TOE BLADE. It very easy to nick or cut the pad so just use the 10 blade only.

I'm an amateur and groom only my own dog. This video was very helpful. When I shaved her paws I wore a headlight (i.e. a flashlight that you wear on your head to free up your hands for a task) and the brightness helped me see the where I was going with the clipper blade.

why shave the feet? Doesnt the feet hair serve a purpose, protect the feet?
@Els_life.Ай бұрын
You shave the paw so the dog won’t slip and slide when running or walking it gives the paws traction.

Regarding Force Dryer, you should NEVER stay in one spot for a while. Its best to extend your arm outward so the air is more spread out so its not in one specific spot ( this will allow you to see the problem or matted areas) and then dry that specific area you need for 3 second, move to a different area extend your arm and do the same thing, then you can come back to the previous area you were working on and continue the cylce, this helps avoid any unpleasantness for the dog. Because how would you like it if someone used a force dryer on you in one spot and kept it there for a full minute, that thing hurts, man. Always smart to test things on yourself to sense how the dog will react/feel. You also forgot to mention certain breads and dogs with health/mental issues should not be forced dried as it can be too much on their body. Always best to use the dryer w/out the nozzle, if they are okay in all volume settings (usually 2), then move your way up with the nozzle of course if they are a breed that allows it and they have no health/mental issues.

Oh this is a great video. I watched other vids where they're just digging in there, no mention of the webbing; that's important info to know. Groomers are reluctant to do my dog now because of his hind leg weakness and anxiety.

Tech here: Dogs with cleaned shaved paws like this suffer in long run. DONT clean hair out but level it off instead. When hair grows back sharp, it irritates their paws, hence licking, and causes discomfort.
@Brenda-jn8lnАй бұрын
Totally agree!! I only "clean up" the hair on the bottom of paws. I think some groomers get a little to obsessed with the clean paw. Doesn't look comfortable for the dog .

Unless you have a foxtail problem in your area and the hair traps the seed and it can burrow.
@californiadreamer258022 күн бұрын
Ingrown hairs may become a problem too. It's also good to check feet after exercising somewhere with grass awns like foxtails whether dog's paws are shaved or not. Some grass awns are very thin but strong.

I use a 10 blade to clean up pads, for added safety and decreased irritation. It's easy to cut loose skin with a #30.

@@haegar9293yeah I have a foxtail issue and my cocker spaniel even got a foot infected. I needed this video and a follow up video for the front so he doesn’t get another one imbedded and infected. (I just spent 5 hours cleaning my backyard of foxtails and there are still more) crossing my fingers my home grooming goes well
