I am just away to put an order in for a 4 at the end of the month, after being on the waiting list for 2 1/2 years. Just picking the specification now. £600 for sides is very steep for a bit of Perspex, but I think I will need them living in Scotland and I what to get good use out of the car. Can you recommend them? Would you do it your self again? Would you still have the template you could sell me, to give me a rough starting point for making them? Great detail in the video. 👍

Congrats on finally getting a build slot that is about to come up! exciting times ahead. Yes I would definitely make my own again. I prefer acrylic and not polycarbonate that Ariel uses. Polycarbonate while more supple and less likely to crack it scratches very easily and over time looks awful. Also Ariel charge an arm and a leg for them. Materials for mine were £60 if I remember correctly. If you are handy with tools and making things you'll knock these out in no time and with ease. I do have a template, the holes will be different very slightly given they are hand made cars not every car is identical. Yes I 100% recommend them, although I would not pay £600 for them though! The biggest benefit is mostly on track as it keeps the wind out. Over a day of track driving the wind actually gets bothersome and tiresome. With these on it makes it so much more comfortable and I think the car looks better with them on as well.

Yeah it feels like I have been waiting forever, but I am almost there. Thanks, I think I will definitely have a go myself. If you don’t mind sharing I would like a paper copy of your template as it might give me a better starting point, if that’s ok. How much would you like for a copy? Or is it easy enough just to trances it from the car.

I made the carpet too! lol. It's pretty easy, I made it from felt carpet the same type used to make entertainment systems in cars and vans. You can get this from anywhere ebay is the best place. Glued this to 3mm rubber cut to fit inside the Atom and then fixed using velcro large round tabs stuck to the floor of the car so it can be easilly removed if not wanted or to change colour which I did do to yellow. If you don't protect the tub it scratches very easily from stones stuck to shoes when on track

Why you didn't enjoy it on the road?
@sl0w_racer
@sl0w_racer 2 жыл бұрын
It's a track car mostly so too fast for the road, people don't see you coming, the attention it gets is borderline annoying eventually, and the worst bit is there is just too much traffic on the road today to really enjoy it's performance or anywhere near it in a safe way. If you like just pottering around cruising then it's fine, but I don't personally. On the track though I LOVED it, huge amount of fun I couldn't get enough of it every track day was so much fun even then you get held up on track though lol. So I decided to buy a proper race car instead which is even faster and more fun, which is what I wanted. On the road tough you are better off with a superbike imo at least then you can overtake in a safer way.

Would love to chat with you about the Atom 4, thinking about adding one as a dedicated track car. I'll have a look through your videos, this is the first one I saw. I have an SR3 that is fantastic and only a little temperamental but somewhat expensive per hour on the track. I have a K24-swapped Exocet which was my attempt at a cheap Atom and it is neither cheap nor an Atom; it will be for sale soon. The Atom is appealing to me because it would appear to have low cost per hour on the track, is crazy powerful and appears to have nice handling characteristics. Also seems to be reliable. I put a lot of hours on the track and really enjoy a car that I can just get in and drive fast. I have never driven and SR8 or SR10 but have friends with them. The SR8 sounds wonderful but is crazy expensive per hour. The people I've talked to with the SR10s have either said they're too fast or crashed them going too fast. Many of my friends with Wolfs have gone back to SR3s, they say more fun to drive and less expensive than the Wolf per hour.
@sl0w_racer
@sl0w_racer 2 жыл бұрын
The Atom 4 is an amazing car to own but it's a road car that you can take on the track, it's not a race car and it's far from cheap. Even though it doesn't eat through pads or disks it eats rear tyres. If I wanted to get more performance from my car (slicks + seq gearbox with paddles for example) it would have cost me another £20k. This would then of made my car very close to being worth £100k. For £100k you can get some pretty serious race cars. The Atom's appeal is fun, it's not a car for setting lap times so your SR3 even though it has way less power will be much quicker over a lap so it depends on what you are after. I want to go a lot faster which is why I sold mine and I want to race it eventually. If looking at Atoms, the Atom 4 runs a Honda K20c1 engine which is known for overheating so you will need to fix this. The older cars run a K20 either 2.0 or the 2.4 variant these can have a supercharger and as far as I am aware suffer less with overheating due to it not being a turbo I guess. Interesting comments regarding the SR10 being crashed and too fast. I know it runs Silverstone in a 1m.52s some almost 40s quicker than an Atom. I know it runs nice a cool too even when being thrashed on track as I have seen the telemetry. It seems to stay around 82degrees c coolant, oil around 100 degree c. Is an SR10 quicker than the SR8? I don't mind so much running costs, I want something I will enjoy and can extract the most performance from and learn to grow into it and is mega fast. The Atom is fast but you quickly reach it's potential and limit which is the mechanical grip as it has no real aero to speak of.

Ingliston supercars used to have them as part of their rota for supercar experience days but they had so many problems with folk driving them dangerously putting themselves, the instructor and others at risk that they now only have them for passenger rides. You can drive a 458 or a Huracan or an 800bhp GTR at Knockhill with them but not one of their Atoms. That says a lot about the performance and relative difficulty of driving one compared to other modern supercars.

I just finished commenting on Part 1, and was about to edit it and add that you should (if you can) test the results, before and after. When it comes to tuning cars for power, handling, cooling, OFTEN the theoretical doesn't line up with actual and adjustments need to be made. However, looking at this video, I can see you know that already! Outstanding job in your analysis!! Yes, taking it out on the track and doing an on/off analysis with the front wing area tune, would be helpful. Watching the rest of the video, this is outstanding data!! Outstanding! I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say that I wish all car tuning part manufacturers, showed data like this. I need to see the data!

@Leshic2
@Leshic2 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting.. Lover that you're making these and explaining through it. Few comments (had to stop the video, to get them in before I forget). 1. Your engine is starting to look like the McLaren F1 BMW engine bay! Ha.. For several years, I worked in R&D for chip making machinery. We would vaporize a liquid and deliver the vapor to a chamber where it's sprayed onto a disk full of new chips. The temperature control for delivering the vapor to the disk, and the temperature of the disk and across the disk, is very very precise. Poor temperatures cause the vapor to change back into a solid and cake up the lines or other areas, as well as it won't deposit the material uniformly across the disk, causing functional chip performance differences if the chip was in the center vs edge of the disk... Anyways, my point being is, when in comes to insulation, rough placement helps, but take care of the details and the result suddenly are logarithmic. Sealing that last 5% -10% makes a big difference. Imagine you're wearing a jacket in really cold and windy weather. You will notice a very big difference in insulation when you close up the last few holes in your sleeves and neck. 2. Thermostat for the oil cooler. You probably already realized that when you change your oil at room temperature, the valve will be close to the oil cooler, so you'll never drain the oil from it.. Maybe there's a way to short it, or apply power to it, to force it open? 3. I'm no expert and airflow, but it's clear that airflow around the engine, before the oil cooler, is very turbulent... I predict that the air will simply deflect off the oil cooler fins and flow AROUND the oil cooler.. I think it would be helpful if you're able to add a fan on the exhaust side of the cooler and either a pusher fan on the inlet side, or create "cup" or "box" on the inlet side. Walls on all 4 sides that "capture" the air and prevent spill-over, around the cooler. Having written all that, perhaps an inlet fan is a better idea and simpler. You could give it it's own switch on the dash or tie it to something else to automatically turn it on. 4. Great thinking at the front to divert air flow. Yes, that will make a difference.
@sl0w_racer
@sl0w_racer 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for your insightful comments, much appreciated and certainly food for thought. Regarding the drain plug for the oil cooler. The Setrab oil cooler version that I have is a motorsport cooler and they chose not to include a drain plug. The reason after research on this is because that is another potential failure point, so they chose to have reliability over ease of emptying it. Ariel suggested I do not remove the unions when changing oil, eventually all the oil will be recycled and changed over time. The reason being is loosening the unions frequently will potentially introduce a failure point and eventually fatigue the Goodrich unions ultimately causing leaks. I change oil very frequently on this car. It's only done 3000 miles and has had 4 oil changes in this time. It's a very interesting point regarding placement of the oil cooler. This is in part one of the reasons it's taking me a long time to fit it, not to mention I want to test in iterations to see the results rather than a big bang approach. Big bang approaches tend to obfuscate any benefits and make reading the data difficult. My plan is to install under the engine cover vent, test. Then if I am not getting satisfactory results I will create an airduct from the engine cover mount down to the cooler for help with airflow.. Furthermore, adding a fan will be my last solution. Because the oil cooler will add additional capacity of oil to the car, this alone will aid cooling and enable the oil to run cooler simply by adding 20% more engine oil capacity because it's a 1ltr oil cooler. I will calculate all this once I know temps of oil as right now I have no way of knowing the temperature of oil with a NPT sender installed.

As someone waiting for an A4, I find these videos very interesting so thanks for making them! It is however a shame that what comes out from the factory seems to suffer on a warm UK day on track. Should be up to the task without need for this and/or extra radiators etc.

It depends how you drive the car tbh whether you will see a build up of heat or not. The earlier cars got hot too with the supercharger it's just very few people have done anything about it that I know of or even measured everything. It's not until you start looking into all the sensor readings and data you start to understand what is going on and how to improve these things. Have you spec'ed the sports rad and sports core intercooler? These are the only two cooling options Ariel sell today.

@@sl0w_racer Very true, the data doesn’t lie! I was going to spec the Sports Radiator, differences I took away after a chat with the factory were: 1) it’s larger 2) continues to circulate once car is shut down. It would be interesting to find out how much this remedies the chance of overheating and boost being cut as you mentioned on a warm track day. I did wonder if it’s more a case of getting enough air through the front opening to the radiator vs the radiator size itself? Still, great to hear the differences from what you have done, pretty remarkable infact!

@@CharlesM505 The recirculating the coolant will save you from having to do many cool down laps on track hence help slow heat soak when you come into the pits. How is it larger? There is no space for it to be. Maybe they have more cores and hence more fins. It's still a downflow rad though. I would prefer a cross flow. I just last night uploaded a video with my testing results so far. One test shows very minimal front wing air duct testing to force more airflow through the rad, but it all looks very positive. More testing is needed here.

Did you consider ceramic coating for heat shielding?
@sl0w_racer
@sl0w_racer 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I considered it and spoke with Zircotec and a couple others. I concluded the reduction in temps were not enough to go through with it and they advised me not to wrap/heat blanket AND ceramic coat because the wrap can wear the ceramic coat away prematurely. They quoted me a 33% reduction in heat. So if we look at the reductions I am seeing now on my exhaust system (not downpipe) it has a peak temp of around 110-120 degrees celsius. After with the DEI Form A shield I am seeing temps of around 30-40 degree c. That is a ~64-72% reduction in heat and all that heat soaks into the manifold, the sump and the engine - coolant lines etc. So it's much more effective and much cheaper than ceramic coating. It's nasty stuff to work with though. I will probably get the std muffler ceramic coated a gold yellow over the winter that said. When I post up my sensor readings you will see the impact this has on the engine.

@@sl0w_racer Interesting. I'd have assumed the ceramic would give greater heat reductions than that given how popular it is in motorsports.

@@tcroft2165 Most motorsports use a process called hard lagged which is similar to the DEI A shield except it's permanent or they wrap because both are a lot more effective than ceramic coating. Do you follow the chap in the US with the orange Ultima RS? he has a lovely car and he had his exhaust manifold ceramic coated first but later found it didn't reduce temps enough for his car. So he used a traditional wrap in the end, looks like a titanium one. instagram.com/p/CUIr_j2lo2s/
