Ooh yes, I really loved The Terminal Man, it also pairs well with Flowers For Algernon by Baniel Keys. Wow I havnt read Mary Higgens Clarke or Nora Roberts since I was a kid (those were around the house growing up and I read them when I didn't have anything else) I got some (presumably) clean cozy urban fantasy romances, they are "The Magical Beings' Rehabilitation Center" books by KM Shae (almost certainly going to get to at least one of them in august)

I appreciate the lengthy review, Doc, although I wish you'd stop calling Carson a "videographer". Videographers, or video, simply didn't exist in 1888. In fact, moving pictures barely existed, as the first short films weren't shot until the fall of 1888 in Leeds. While writing Tatterdemalion in 2013, I wasn't aware of Carson groping toward being a more spiritual person (He isn't- He's a man of science) and the difference between the upper and lower case G in "God" may simply be a matter of whether he refers to a god in the abstract versus God itself through a proper noun. Hope this helps.

That makes sense re: religion and spirituality. Carson self-proclaimed his lack of religious belief early on, if I remember. To your point, I always felt videographer wasn’t right. Blame my ignorance and unfamiliarity with the subject for my misuse of the term. Please forgive my mistake.

I helped my friend write a Jack the Ripper screenplay about 6 years ago and have fairly extenivley researched the cases (ive forgotten a lot of it and sadly the screenplay was never made into a film). I just finished a historical fiction called No Man's Chattel about a woman impersonating her brother to avoid being sold off into marriage in 1309, only ended up being a 4.25☆ but im hoping the other books in the series are a lil better. It was the first audiobook narrated by a virtual voice and honestly it sounded a lot better than a human voice when sped up (presumably because of the consistency and speaking with perfect diatonic pitch)

Westerns are among my least read books. "Lucky Red" by Claudia Cravens and "The Canyon of Bones" by Richard Wheeler are the only two I have on the tbr. (A small message from the other side) "Traditional family values" is a far too small box to try to fit everyone in, and tends to shove women down as homemakers and baby cannons. Much like the aforementioned disease, unpredictable weather, and vigilante justice doing far more harm than good trying to make everyone fit an empowered minoritys standards fails everyone, those who want traditional families can have them and leave the rest of us alone.
@DrL_Reads
@DrL_Reads 16 күн бұрын
@zachreads I just saw that Lucky Red was available on Libby and got it! I’ll let you know how it goes. To your comment on traditional values, my point was that I think that a reader is more likely to find those types of values (even as you described) portrayed in the American western genre than in other genres outside of maybe religious fiction. As far as the setting of the book, it would make sense that strong family values are critical to writing family vs. family feuds and plot lines like that. Though, admittedly, marital betrayal for money or land would surely be consistent with the setting and context in any western plot.

@@DrL_Reads I'll buddy read Lucky Red if you pick when and want to. I don't like the self censorship in avoiding media with different views, it's sad to block out things bc they are afraid of themselves Just as an example I'm currently reading Break the Beast by Alison Tebo which is a Christian retelling of Beowulf (very religious) The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton which is a pulitzer prize winner in 1921 and Caught in the Basilisk's Gaze by Malory Dunlin which is monster erotica. I just want everyone to feel free to explore in a safe and informed way without guilt or shame (im aware my boundaries are on the extreme end of openness).

I've read the first 19 Reacher books, I started after the first movie came out. I've seen the second movie and first season of the show but I did get a little burned out with Reacher. Particularly the books where his time keeping ability started feeling like a superpower and all the damage (especially the head trauma) hasn't completely destroyed his body started to push my suspension of disbelief too far. Have you read any Harry Bosch by Michael Connelly the series reference eachother here and there and I have stayed up to date with the Bosch books.
@DrL_Reads
@DrL_Reads 25 күн бұрын
Yeah you definitely have to allow a little stretch with Reacher’s talents. I know one person on X talked about how his skills don’t match that of an MP. However I still really enjoy the stories and plots. I haven’t read Bosch. You recommend it? I tried the show but didn’t like it.
@zachreads
@zachreads 25 күн бұрын
@@DrL_Reads I do rec Bosch but there are a lot of them, I think 24 in the main series and 13 others in the Bosch Universe (I've read all but 2 of the side ones). The show combined two books per season and I liked it but it could have been better. "The Late Show" could be a place to start bc that's where the character who will replace Bosch is introduced (Bosch is getting very old), or you could pick and choose. Reading all of them in order is rewarding but at this point that's a daunting task.

Hello! Welcome to booktube. A book I'm looking forward to from a small publisher is "Arithmophobia" it comes out on the 14th, it has 13 math based short stories and a poem written in the Fibonacci sequence. The publisher has a youtube horror channel called Phobophile if you want to learn more. My favorite crime writer is Yrsa Sigurdardottir she is Iclandic and has a smaller publisher. Sara Blaedel is a Danish crime author I also adore. My all-time favorite historical fiction is The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave, also I think it might be perfect for a social psychologist to analyze. Things you may find interesting perspectives in -Earthlings by Sayaka Murata -The Core of the Sun by Johanna Sinisalo -Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro -Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan -The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum (content Warning) Sorry for the long conment I have endless reccomendations lol.
