Hi Davin and thanks a lot for this quite interesting video. As many of us I've encountered this fast blinking red light problem.. I've taken the whole thing apart to clean it up , and then tested every part as you did. My problem was different, the solenoid seems to work as I have gas flowing out of the nozzle (after a cleaning session though), still the igniter/heater element never glowed during the 15 min session, it remained cold all the way. I've tried to check the voltage as well , and was surprised to measure about 1,5V when turned on. Any idea or hint to get this igniter to glow as well as yours? 😅 Thanks you in advance for your time and have a great day Cheers

Thanks for the compliment! As for the ignitor, they are very fragile, and it might have a hairline crack, which would render it useless. The good news is that replacements are available on ebay and such. Just search for "mosquito magnet hot surface ignitor". It is possible that there is something wrong with the control board, but that seems less likely. I have not purchased one, but the ones commonly listed seem to be more of a probe and look a bit more sturdy. One thing about the voltage, did you try to read it as DC or AC? Power to the machine is AC, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if the ignitor was receiving AC and that is why your measurement was off. I have never tried to measure that circuit myself, so I am just guessing here. Best of luck!

@@DavinDesborough Thanks for your feedback Davin! I'll check that google search ASAP. Thanks also for the 12v AC information, indeed I was assuming output was 12V DC and did the measure this way... my mistake!! I'll give a try with AC measuring next time, PCB looks fine so I guess it's not the right path to walk.. But I did test this igniter without opening the gas tank, do you think there could be some safety inside to prevent the igniter from glowing if no gas running through? I don't think so but not quite sure about it... Thanks again!!

@@alexgti9345 no, there is no interconnect there. As far as I can tell, the only thing the machine monitors is temperature to understand if things are working.

@@DavinDesborough Okay so even if the gas tank was closed, the igniter should have glowed, which probably means it's dead and has to be replaced.

@@alexgti9345 Correct. It will leave the igniter on no matter what. To me, this seems a logical safety measure to prevent a build-up of gas.

I thought I could do this myself with no help - wrong (but I am a disabled veteran with bad shoulders, was too heavy for me). After it fell off the tailpipe on the one side and hit me in the head - (good size knot) on head), I go my helper - a floor jack with a scrap piece of plywood large enough to handle any shifting of hitch. I was actually able to get it on the tailpipe side and jack up with my leg to get all the holes aligned (the front ones can be difficult). I put in all the bolts on the one side in but not tightened down, the slide the jack over and was able to do the other side. Placement of the first bolt (nearest back bumper) was difficult on both sides but once aligned I was able to go back and tighten down all of the bolts. Would have taken less time if I started with the floor jack.

Always take the tip off when feeding the wire and use the cold feed button. As far as tips go, one is for mig welding and the other is for gas less flux core. Use the plastic for gas less. you can see your welds better.

Thanks very much for sharing your findings. Question My power supply broke down. I know it is a 12V AC but do you know what is the voltage with no load ? (I wanted to replace it with a DC model but a 12VDC 3A is I guess not enough for the ignitor through the rectifier) Thanks in advance
@DavinDesborough
@DavinDesborough Ай бұрын
Huh, I had to go look at my transformer as I would have sworn it output DC. You are right 12v AC @ 3A. Anyway, why would you want to go to DC? There are parts of the circuitry that are expecting AC and you are just asking for trouble by feeding it DC. I would need to take a close look at the board to say what might be impacted, but you'd probably be better off to order a new clone supply for about $45 and call it a day. Example: amzn.to/3xyCDrd (affiliate link). I know the official ones are stupid expensive. If you want to splice some wires, you can get what looks to be the same thing I just linked to, but with a different plug for under $25 with coupon: amzn.to/3KUcNkz (affiliate link) That said, does the unit not power on at all with the old supply, or is it a startup issue? It would suck to buy a new PS only to have it still not start.

Thanks for your answer. Last winter I brought the moskito magnet in a shed but stupidly forgot the power supply that was hidden in the grass. It did not survive at all. Thanks for your amazon links. Unfortunately I am in Europe and my grid is 220v. I am unable to find one compatible here that is affordable. This is why I looked at a DC version. Looking at the circuitry I believe that a DC should work but it needs to be at the right level to compensate losses through the rectifiers. If you have a min to measure the unloaded voltage that would be a great help. Many thanks.

I know this is a super old video but hoping you’re still around. I can’t seem to get my igniter to light or my selenoid to open. I’m skeptical both failed as I put a volt meter on the leads for the igniter and I get zero voltage at that first fan slowdown and speed up. Any ideas on that? Board itself failed? The fan still fires up and I never get a fast flashing light just the steady startup flashing light the entire time, for hours if I leave it be.

Still here! That does seem odd. I would start by undoing all the plugs on the circuit board and trying to clean it. Get some high percentage isopropyl alcohol and an old toothbrush and scrub the board. Perhaps there is just something across a couple pins or something. The failure mode, however, makes me think something is wrong with the main control chip and it is freezing up at a certain point. It shouldn't run indefinitely like that. It should either start or present an error, but hopefully a cleaning will fix it. After that, try starting it with the gas solenoid disconnected and see if it runs forever. If it still does, plug it back in and try the same test with the igniter. Lastly, re-run the test with the thermistor. If one of those tests changes the behavior of the machine, it might point to something to dive into more. Good luck and let me know if anything changes. Glad to help troubleshoot!

@@DavinDesborough Thanks. Job done. I split the halves of the engine and it was packed full of crud which I dremeled out. The ignitor was actually working so I left it in. The gas jet was plugged up so I took that apart and cleaned it out. For some reason the propane tank valve didn't release so I switched tanks and this one was fine. I used deoxit on all the electrical contacts to keep corrosion down & Put a strip of tape over each of the four case screw holes as mud dobbers had packed the slots with crud. When reassembled it started in a very few minutes. After seeing how it's done I'll just do a cleaning every winter and have it good as new for each spring. Thanks again!

I see the black panel is not replaced. Does road dirt get up into the hitch area? Does this self installed hitch void any warranties.
@DavinDesborough
@DavinDesborough 2 ай бұрын
You are not modifying anything about the car while installing the hitch or harness. It should not impact the warranty. That said, I would ask the dealer to be sure if that is a concern for you. The panel that is removed is just to help with airflow.. It is not sealed to the body, so dirt and water will get behind it no matter what. You'll also notice that it only covers about 3/4 the width of the bumper. Good luck!

Thanks for showing us how it's done. Would love to know what you think of the hitch after having it on for a few months. Does it bottom out ever? Do you wish you installed an attachment bracket for the wire, or has it been fine tucked away? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the compliments! It is an easy install if you have the tools. The hitch has been fine. I have used it with my bike rack and trailer, no issues. As for bottoming out, you'd have to be going over something really tall or navigating a big dip for that to be a concern. It sits plenty high enough to not hit anything. The wire has been fine riding up there. It has never fallen out. That said, I did buy this, but haven't actually installed it yet. amzn.to/4bEumjT (Amazon affiliate link) Good luck!

Sorry for the late response. You won't be able to order one as the company does not sell parts to the public. I can not find my purchase from way back when. I have looked around and can not find anything either. Basically, you would just need to buy a bare thermistor and put it in. I need to take one apart again and try to determine what thermistor is being used (resistance/temperature). That said, have you tested yours with a multimeter? If you heat it up and the voltage changes, it is probably OK. I will point you to this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bJZ2bKycz9e5hnk.html. I think his idea of securing it with a metal screw is a good one. It would help to bring more heat to the thermistor. the only down side would be the possibly of corrosion between dissimilar metals.

So the thing about mosquitos in the Americas is that they are actually all invasive species. There is one species from North Africa and another from Asia Minor that were brought over here accidentally. So wiping out as many mosquitos as possible helps maintain the native habitats in our ecosystems and also helps stop the spread of blood borne illnesses.
