Great video...brings back lots of memories for me, too! Then, I remember a few situations when one of the 60-80 pounders decided to hit the fly about 3 feet from boat side. That's your and your guide's OMG moment, especially when other skiffs are nearby. 😀

You can use ground beef and pork plus sausage with sage, rosemary and thyme or you can make a roast of beef and pork instead. There is no recipe with amounts. It is all by eye. Roughly beef to pork to sausage 3:3:1 and roughly 3+ tablespoons of dry rosemary, thyme and sage. Often I add beef bullion for additional flavor. It is salty enough that I don't add salt. Cream cheese or Parmesan is optional as is the parsley and basil. It is important to grind or process the mixture. It needs to be fine or they will be difficult to stuff. The pasta is one egg to each cup of all purpose flour. Hope that helps

Dan you are tarpon catching machine. not to mention a great job filming the experience. always enjoy your material. when fishing a gurgler do you use fluoro or mono for bite tippet?
@DanFerraris Жыл бұрын
If I rig the rod ahead I use mono, but if I switch from a baitfish pattern, I don’t bother and just leave the fluorocarbon on. I don’t think it makes much difference.
@patspangler2351 Жыл бұрын
That is an amazing number of feeding tarpon. Were they feeding on baitfish or small shrimp? Looks like the gurgler mimics whatever they’re eating very well!!! Have fun………you’re definitely on the fish. Very few fish on the beach south of you…….😢

It was quite the sight and the video doesn’t do it justice. The water is very muddy and I couldn’t tell what they were eating, but at time’s recently I’ve seen some finely shrimp and pipefish. I don’t know when it started, but it was over in 20 minutes.

What weight rod are you using? I use to use a Lumas 12 weight in the passes where most of the tarpon are >100 lbs. I liked a 9 weight for the 20-60 pounders in the backwater. It really is an blast!!!! If I still had my boat I’d show you a few of my hot spots for tarpon just south of where you are fishing……you can blame my wife……lol
@DanFerraris Жыл бұрын
For juveniles, I use a 9wt, sometimes an 8. Those are Orvis and TFO Amiom II. For adults I use an Orvis D3 or Scott 11 wt. in the fall when I fish in deep water with an intermediate, I fish wit a TFO 12wt. I have an understanding wife and too Amy rods😜

I’m down at Vanderbilt Beach checking on hurricane repairs. I’m sure enjoying your videos. I use to keep a Maverick down here and do exactly what you are doing. My wife made me sell the boat. Said I was getting too old to fly fish alone and battle big tarpon by myself. Now I’m delegated to beach fishing……I usually sight fish for snook but I’ve been here two days and very few fish on the beach. Glad to see the tarpon numbers are good. I did see one tarpon come out of the water this AM beyond the sandbar…….they just tease me. Keep the videos coming.

Well done Dan always enjoyable to watch. wish you would include in the description your tarpon setup (rod, reel, line, leader and fly used. It looks like the last part of the video the fish were feeding in low O2 area on shrimp?
@DanFerraris Жыл бұрын
I fish for juveniles with a 9wt, sometimes an 8. Usually a 10-11’ leader with a 30# bite tippet, occasionally40#. Usually I fish with a dark fly in muddy water. I have no idea what they were eating. It is really frustrating. The could be really really tiny shrimp, but we’ve tried, but can’t see anything.today the cormorants looked like they were earring eels or pipefish, so I switched to a brown bunny fly. It worked, but only when it was right in their face. I have several fly lines. They all work. Hope that answers your questions.

very nice, once your in the area, whats the best way to find them??
@DanFerraris Жыл бұрын
Not to be facetious, you have learn to recognize what they look like when they break the surface and discriminate between them and mullet and other baitfish. If you see birds along a mangrove shoreline, you can almost bet they are there feeding on bait and the birds are taking advantage of them driving the bait into the mangroves. You sometimes have to spend a lot of time looking and still you can’t find them.
