“Oh, my dear Katie. You know, some parents, when they're angry, they get along much better when they don't live together. They don't fight all the time, and they can become better people, and much better mummies and daddies for you. And sometimes they get back together. And sometimes they don't, dear. And if they don't, don't blame yourself. Just because they don't love each other anymore, doesn't mean that they don't love you. There are all sorts of different families, Katie. Some families have one mommy, some families have one daddy, or two families. And some children live with their uncle or aunt. Some live with their grandparents, and some children live with foster parents. And some live in separate homes, in separate neighborhoods, in different areas of the country - and they may not see each other for days, or weeks, months... or even years at a time. But if there's love, dear... those are the ties that bind, and you'll have a family in your heart, forever. All my love to you poppet, you're going to be alright... bye bye.” I don’t think there is a monologue in any film that hits me the same way this one does, because it is the perfect answer to any child who is dealing with the issues of divorcing parents, split households or alternative guardians. It’s a beautiful speech to give them hope.

As a kid, you see the judge as an unreasonable jerk. As an adult, and probably someone in law, you start to realize that if you had to read all of what Daniel has done, you'd probably suggest psychological testing and treatment too. Like imagine if you replace Daniel with Jame Gumb (Buffalo Bill), and made him a dad who's stalking his wife and trying to dress as a woman to see his kids, despite having a restraining order on him. YOU'D PROBABLY GIVE A SIMILAR VERDICT.

1:10 - 1:20 I don't know why, but I feel like you can interpret that line in two ways: 1. Chris blaming himself for being born, since he feels like if his parents had little to no kids (At a different time or NEVER at all.), they'd somehow be a happy couple. But kids don't get to decide that, their parents do, therefore they shouldn't hurt themselves over their parents' failures. 2. Chris was referring to the party. As he knew he was grounded but feels like he's to blame, since he could've tried talking his dad out of throwing a party. But Daniel's a grown adult, and therefore he's got a responsibility of learning when "No means NO.", and should know better than to be going behind Miranda's back. I've known many young people like Chris who feel like they're to blame for their parent's behavior, who say that they should have done something. But the truth is, they're just kids, and it's the parents who are responsible.

My parents are divorced too, have been for 20 years. I just rewatched this movie for the first time in years, and I gotta admit, Mrs. Doubtfire’s speech about different families still hits me like a punch to the gut, even as an adult. Because even after all these years, I still want my family back

It's amazing how much of an impact this movie still has with me. There are countless movies with actors who have CGI perfected physiques, eye popping visual effects and adequate acting. This movie is a great story about pain, loss, immaturity, growth and acceptance of differences. Not every story has the perfect happy ending. Few do in life. I was nine years old when I saw this and am in my early 40s now. I still feel like I have growing up to do. I've asked my 80 year old mother if she feels like she's grown up and she laughed and said no. Life is about growing and changing up to the last second, and to this day this film reminds me of that.

It's a more realistic ending, in which two people are broken apart by their own personal flaws and realize that getting back together would be a major mistake. Yet offers assurance to the children most affected by divorce in that family comes in all shapes and sizes so long as there is still love for them from both parties.

The judge reminds me of that old chairman of the committee in bicentennial man also starring Robin Williams and also directed by Chris Columbus and that chairman denies Robin his rights on being a human when in fact he’s a robot. And says nothing more like this judge does in this film.

Honestly: I'm glad that they went with this ending. To me while it ends with an uplifting tone, there is still room for the audience to make up their own mind as to what happened down the road for Daniel, Miranda and the kids: did Daniel and Miranda make amends and get back together or, after much soul searching and another long talk, realize it was best for them to remain apart but be on good terms with each other.
