Here in Sweden this species is very common but also in the other Nordic countries, it is such a good little cichlid extremely gentle not aggressive towards small tetras or corys but do not keep them with other cichlids they often get bullied but I have kept them with Angels and Discus since they have a totally different body shape they do not care about this little one and the Night and Day cichlid as we call it here in Sweden is more nimble and faster than the two other ones it is never an issue, but best are they with som corys and tetras I think. Such an underrated species and should be more available to hobbyists. The name comes for the Yellow round form of the caudal fin it looks like a setting/rising sun especially on the male and the Night comes from the top half of their bodies because it looks like a starry night or the Milky way especially on the female, so that is way we call it the Day and Nicht Cichlid and it is nice that both the male and the female can be the source of the name , we think at least. It is not a name I have seen other European counties use at all it is just here in the 5 Nordic countries , but ofc easiest is to use the latin name so everyone knows what species we all are talking about. But what do you think about the name? Do you like the name (Day&Night Cichlid) that we use? We have a flower here in the Nordic counties that is half yellow and half dark purplish-blue that is called Night and Day that is why also we came up with that name but we reversed the words to Day and Night.

I was looking for Atabapo altums, but man these are every bit as nice! These are incredible!!! What size do you sell these at and do you find them like typical tank bred...ie. far less problems than wild caughts? Thanks for your time. Where are you? Can you ship?

I'm currently working with four different types of wild Altum. I do not have fish from atabapo. I ship all over the continental United States from Shoreline, Washington. Typical selling size is US Quarter Coin Body. 3-4 months old. Captive bred Altum are similar in care to domestic Scalare angels. Wilds are only advisable for advanced keepers. Oftentimes I cannot save them

Brother, Is it okay to feed quality frozen blood worms for the F1 Altum small babies (around 1.5 inches size body)??
@shorelineaquatics5210
@shorelineaquatics5210 10 ай бұрын
Over the years I have learned to avoid freshwater live and frozen foods. Most likely feeding bloodworms to healthy Altum will be fine. There is some element of risk. I'm more likely to take these type of risks when I'm trying to spawn fish. I think the best frozen food is spirulina brine shrimp. Frozen foods can possibly contain bad bacteria, but since this food is saltwater grown, it is not likely to contain parasites or protozoa.

How much maintenance is required depends on the stocking levels. I like to have 10 or 12 fish together to grow up.. I like to use really big tanks 200+ gallons but you can get away with a 6 foot 125 gallon. My maintenance would be weekly changing water 60% or more.. I would clean my mechanical filtration once every two weeks. I feed a vegetable-based flake food in the morning and later in the day brine or mysis shrimp. These fish can adapt to eat most dry foods that are offered. I currently have a tank that is 240 gallons it has 30 sub adult altum. I consider this overstocked. I change this water twice a week as low as I can without scaring the fish. In general I don't like to change lower than the fish are tall with the fins. I also favored tanks that are tall. 30 inches high is super nice..enjoy!

@@jojyp Riverine fishes love water changes. You can change the water everyday if you like. I use a python type water fill system and go straight unaged to the tank.. I add the dechlorinator afterwards. Just because they accept daily water changes doesn't mean that this is necessary. What you're looking for is the right amount of care. Sometimes over care can leave the fish weaker when they are exposed to small amounts of pollution. Something to consider. Good luck
