I used the et310 on several jobs and then got the et450- just fyi for those looking, the et310 is very accurate and far faster in identifying the exact circuit, because it automatically remembers the highest value from everything you show it in the panel. The more expensive et450 will allow you to trace high voltage and de-energized circuits, but you often have to play with the sensitivity, and if you do adjust it, you have to trace the whole panel again to find your maximum and visually look at every reading. The et350 was just 2 sweeps of the panel every time, and it would sniff that thing out. If you need the extra voltages above 240, or the extra sensitivity, get the et450. But I seriously miss using the et350. It was snappy and it felt way more like a fully automated process. It was either red or it wasn't, and it was awesome.

@@ObmanaCare (open neutral) I clamped one lead onto the neutral in a receptacle and clamped the other lead on a ground from a different cct. I was able to trace in a wall up to a light in the ceiling. The signal did not continue on. So i removed the light fixture and discovered the neutrals were not twisted and one was loose in the marratte which was causing the open neutral to occur. Basically the line came from the panel to the octagon in the ceiling and branched out from there. The homeowner waited until i figured out the problem that he recently changed the light fixture.

I’m trying to determine how best to trace a low voltage line. A landscaper installed a low voltage wire through a small brick wall to feed a concrete flower pot. I have access to the wires that come out of the pot. Unfortunately, as I have found elsewhere, the contractor installed these in case a low voltage light was desired in the pot but left the other side in the ground disconnected. How can I find the other side without digging up my yard? Thanks

I don’t have the et450, but I just bought the regular small circuit breaker finder. I had horrible results and it did not work for me. I have a large electric panel and two small panels all in a small closet. Does this affect the circuit breaker finder? Thanks!!!
@mikestoolfun
@mikestoolfun 4 ай бұрын
It can affect it if the smaller panels are sub panels to the larger one. Slowly run the receiver along each breaker in the first panel. Dont stop even if the receiver indicates the breaker you are passing over is potentially the one. Make sure to scan every breaker, and then go back to the start and do it again. This time it should narrow down the breaker with the second pass. I prefer the ET450 cause i can connect the common of the transmitter to a different ground or neutral , from the line i am trying to scan. This helps with the magnetic field not being cancelled out and makes for a stronger signal at the receiver. Note: when you are scanning a circuit and you use the neutral and line from the same circuit the magnetic field gets cancelled out and the signal will be weaker.

It looks like you moved Klein's Circuit Breaker Finder to the side as you described using the ET450 to find a circuit breaker. Does this mean that you don't like the circuit breaker finder? There is a transformer box on the side of each home, but each transformer powers the pathway lights to the house adjacent. I suppose they didn't want to wire under the driveway/concrete. How would I connect the Klein transmitter to trace the wires for a pathway light? Would I remove the wires from the transformer box and attach alligator connectors and de-engergize the circuit first? Do these work on an un-energized circuit? I have a wire in a wall that was hooked up and energized in an outlet, it went from my upstairs to my down stairs and it is no longer energized but I have no idea where it goes, it has no power itself when all breakers are on and all outlets and lights work down stairs. I will be closing up this wall soon and don't know what to do with this wire, my basement is finished and so not obvious where it goes, I'm not sure if it fed something that no longer exist? I'm not sure if I should just wire nut it and bury it? Any thoughts I'd appreciate it! Thanks
@mikestoolfun
@mikestoolfun 9 ай бұрын
It does trace de-energized circuits. A couple of things could have caused the wire to de-energize. 1. The wire was removed from its feed during your reno. Did you delete any outlets when you opened up the wall? 2. A mouse chewed through the wire. It can be possible that a mouse chewed the wire somewhere. Ive run into this many times. 3. The wire is one a light switch somewhere. Go around your whole house and turn on all the light switches. Ive also run into this scenario. The owner installed a light-switch and put the line on the load side. So when you turned off the lights two receptacles would turn off. If you have a voltage mete with resistance/continuity testing, see if you have continuity between the white and ground. That could be an indicator whether the wire is tied to a circuit that goes back to the panel.

@@mikestoolfun Awesome thanks for the reply! @mikestoolfun
@mikestoolfun 9 ай бұрын
@@skylark4901 if you are getting no continuity from neutral to ground, its cut somewhere. You could have an open neutral, or the wire does not run back to the panel. Theres a few more options to check but that involves going into your electrical panel. You would have to shut the power off to the electrical panel. (Shut main breaker off). Connect the black wire to the ground in that wire. (The wire that is hanging in your wall) MAKE SURE YOUR PANEL MAIN BREAKER IS TURNED OFF Go to your panel and check continuity from hot to ground on each breaker. (The black wire connected to the breaker) and see if you pick up continuity there. If you pick up continuity, go back to the wire in the wall, separate the ground from black, and check in the panel again to see if you still pick up continuity on the same breaker wire. Side note. If you have any ballast fixtures in your house, you could pick up a low resistance on the line wires. This is what I would do if I was tracing the wire and didnt have a circuit tracer, I do highly recommend you get an electrician for this. Cheers
