@trucking uk. I am glad that you make KZfaq videos that show both the struggles and the happiness, as well as the outcomes you can achieve. I believe in you. You have inspired me to gain my license, work for someone, and eventually start my own business in cargo, freight, and hire services. You can do it because you are pushing me to do it too. Now I have a career path I can focus on. I did not have a clear direction or know what I wanted to do, but you made it happen. Thank you for your inspiration and guidance.

@trucking uk. Having a backup truck is essential. If one vehicle is in the garage, you still have a backup to rely on. I understand that the cost of a second truck is significant, but I believe in your ability to make it happen with the right support. You've got this! I also support you and your journey, showcasing what trucking is truly about-the good and the bad. You show that everything isn't as perfect as some may claim, but this is a positive. By being real about the struggles, you provide valuable insight for anyone looking to start their own business. So don't give up, continue to push for it, and follow your dreams.

A backup truck? Might as well have a driver in it. No point having a wagon sat there earning nothing ‘just in case’. His mistake was going for a clapped out V8 Scania. He wanted a V8 when he just doesn’t need it. Nothing but a money pit. Start small and work towards the big stuff. Throwing money at flash paint jobs is not the way to start in this game. Running boxes as a subbie for a subbie has got to be the lowest rates too. That Scania probably costs a grand to fill up. Who cares what it looks like or what badge it has on the grill. Reliability is the key. Would have been better off buying something like that Daf he’s ended up in. Unless you are pulling max weight over long distance the V8 is a waste of time and money. A worn out V8 will suck your bank balance dry.
@GearUpBusinessInsightsКүн бұрын
@petittrainguernsey3297 I agree with you that the cost of a Scania is quite high. When starting a business, it's crucial to evaluate each truck's affordability, as trucks, especially Scanias, are a significant investment. I've observed many individuals purchasing Scanias, but if I were in their position, I would consider alternatives like DAF or Volvo. Exploring the market for more affordable and reliable options is essential.I believe many people do not thoroughly consider their needs and options before making such a substantial purchase. Opting for a good used truck from brands like DAF or Volvo can be a more practical decision.

@@GearUpBusinessInsights I operate a 34 year old Dotto (Italian) Tourist Land Train. My first year in business cost me 25k in maintenance and parts alone. Year two I put myself through technical training and taught myself as I went with the maintenance and constant repairs and renovations to such an old vehicle. Invested in a new FPT engine for the loco. Halved my maintenance bill. Yes I would dearly love a new train and a new Dotto (the best) will set me back nearly £350k! I would be able to double my earnings on busy days. However, that’s 10k a month repayments. Not a chance in hell. Second hand Deltrain (Portuguese) and based on a Landrover chassis for sale in Ireland. £120k. 13 years old. However, buying these things second hand is a massive step into the unknown. They are bespoke vehicles and who knows what horrors lay beneath a flash paint job and a clean dipstick. My train can earn £25k per month peak season. We only operate 6 months of the year. So whilst on paper I can afford a £120k loan. The reality is that in Feb when I have zero income, can I make payments on a big loan. Unlikely. So I’ll stick with what I know and keep it running til the business loan is paid off. Then I’ll make a decision. That may involve a newer train, or, most likely. A massive refurb of my current one. They are very complicated vehicles. All axles steer. That’s a lot of track rod ends and ball joints, 56 to be precise! 3 years ago I spent over 3k on tyres in just 6 months. Tracking was way out on 12 wheels. Garage quoted me £1k to do the tracking. A few emails to other operators and I sorted it with axle stands, a tape measure and string. Last year my tyre bill was £200. This chap in these vids probably makes more money from his KZfaq channel than his wagon. Which is savvy and clever. But, if he really wants to be an owner operator he needs to take your suggestion and make considered choices on reliability, practicalilty and affordability. Margins are so tight in transport, whether it people or goods. Keeping the variable costs down makes a huge difference.

@@petittrainguernsey3297 If I were in his position as an owner-operator, I would take a similar approach to yours and self-teach myself the skills needed to become a commercial vehicle mechanic. This would help me save on the high costs associated with hiring professional mechanics. Additionally, I would seek the advice of a business consultant, despite the initial expense, to gain valuable insights into cost-saving measures and operational efficiencies. While it's true that the learning curve can be steep and not everyone in the field readily offers guidance, such proactive steps can make a significant difference.

@@petittrainguernsey3297that's correct. Never understood why he chose a V8 and spent all that cash with a paint job. You can get a 2018-2019 MAN high cab for like 5k+VAT and it has Alot of space for tramping and will be fairly reliable, with cheap enough parts. Bad business decisions overall honestly
