Wise words. Planting density decisions will constantly evolve, with many factors influencing a grower's inputs to the equation. In my case (cider apple growing), one such limiting factor was the availability of available machinery to harvest very narrow row widths. One also had to consider the fact that the end product had a maximum value, limited by contract terms. All these variables dictated the pruning method and expenditure per acre as the orchard matured. The overriding security of a minimum contract price, a long contract (20-30 years) and the fact that all fruit from a named orchard had to be purchased by the cider maker for, what was effectively a generation, influenced many such decisions.

At last; someone who talks about pruning, knowing why he is making those cuts and what the result of doing so will be. Good, dominant, gradually tapering central leaders, with wide-angled uncluttered branches emanating from them. Splendid.
