If a dog has separatipn issues only with the owner, but when in an other house for a longer period of time with other people without the owner and he is fine, no stress - is it separation anxiety?

A year on, an answer please? I have listened several times over the lat year or more, you say you want feedback from breeders. How can breeders lodge their feedback when the NCO will not forward it to you.? How does Australia's ANKC, an Associate member, work with the BREED STANDARDS COMMISSION currently, when ANKC alters Breed Standards? I note that the MODEL format is not used nor FCI BREED NOMENCLATURE?

Very pertinent points. Being concerned for a dog's physical health and emotional well-being are as important as maintaining the breeds with true characteristics.

You should consider changing these "thumbnail" pictures. They are terrible and look like the worst spam, the older blue ones you did looks more ok. I didnt dare to click on one of the links I saw on facebook. But besides that, lovely channel and I have subscribed.

Thank you this is excellent and the early social training, or lifestyle training certainly leads to better starts for pups looking at each pup as an individual.

Adam is a world recognised researcher in dog behaviour but not the first. Many scientists have studied behaviour, probably beginning over a hundred years ago with Pavlov. However the study has definitely become more sophisticated, due in large part to the studies in Budapest and Vienna.

A lot of things to learn are available on internet and thru books, but everything is not good and correct, regarding ethology & ways of educate and live with our dogs. Its also essential to educate kids about their animal needs and behaviour with right information before they find wrong ones or just don't try to get more knowledge about their animals. (Dogs or any other one of course).

So as per this, the common practice of placing a female puppy with a family on breeder's terms, then breeding her, and having her return to the breeder's residence to have the pups, often at a considerably late stage of her pregnancy , might not be a very good idea after all, considering the dog and her pups. From a psychological and behavioral point of wiew as well as everything else ??

Oh and as to the question of how to humanely and effectively reduce the number of strays, the answer is spay and neuter, in the short term. In the longer term education and promoting the change in attitudes towards pets and their care in countries where strays are a problem ; And probably go on spaying and neutering. Donating to spay / neuter campaigns is something everyone can do

Thank you for taking this up. ;) I am in a small minority as I am involved with owning , showing and breeding purebred dogs, but am also involved in so called rescue activities. ALL of the asociations I foster dogs for ( in FInland ) promote and arrange spay / neuter campaigns in the countries they operate in. Every single one. No one in rescue imagines that adopting dogs would solve this issue. However , adopting out dogs is one of the things that is done, and I too have adopted several dogs. All of them ( as well as the ones I have fostered ) have eventually adapted really well into the life of a pet and a house dog. I have one oldie, who in all probability was someone's pet when he was young, but alas , ended up at a shelter, and spent 9 long years there. He is super friendly towards people and dogs but guess very ordinary looking, not small enough, not big enough, not handsome nor cute enough for anyone to notice him . Then the younger dogs started attacking him so things started to look very bad for him indeed, and it was arranged for me to take him in as a "forever foster ". I have a house and a yard so it was easy in that respect. He is the sweetest old guy. It wasn't easy at first but even he adapted back to the life as a pet , so that can sometimes happen, and I know of other dogs like him . In his country of origin euthanasia is not really done, so he would not have been PTS there. . ( as someone may wonder about that ) . If someone asks would I do it again knowing what I know now , I'd say yes. It is not of course for everyone, but it is what I have done.

Its interesting conversation, however you talk with terms like registered or professional breeder and its not clear the meaning of them. Actually in my country professional breeder is the puppy producer who has profit from that. Also we talk about wellness of the animal but profit has nothing to do with wellness. Laws are made to protect the trading and not the animals

This raises some questions: we are talking about populations. The Animal Welfare Act protects the individual animal, so that official veterinarians would have to prohibit breeding even of animals with e.g. grade 2? And the fact is that most dogs with severe problems are not bred in the big breeding clubs. Don't you think that the first thing to change or force is that every dog and every breeder should be registered because they are all subject to the same legislation. Only if you cover (register) all breeders, you are able to make a judgement that makes a difference to the whole breed and not just 10% of the breed. ???

it leaves us with some questions : we do talk about populations. The animal law protect the single animal so official vets have to stop breeding also from animals with f.i. grade 2 ? And fact is, that most of the dogs with severe problems are not bred in the big Kennel Clubs. Don`t you think first thing to change, or to force ist to register every dog and every breeder because they all are ruled by the same legislation. An excellent introduction and overview of 2020 FCI. Where there is a concern with the compliance of an FCI Member ie national kennel club, where are breeders voices able to be heard by the FCI? Clearly, national kennel clubs are unlikely to lodge breaches/ complaints about themselves. PLEASE CONSIDER THIS. THANK YOU.

Dr Jakkel says here that humans have many more genetic diseases than dogs. In absolute numbers, it is true that more monogenic (single gene mutation) diseases have been documented in humans than dogs - around 10000 in humans (www.who.int/genomics/public/geneticdiseases/en/index2.html) compared to around 700 in dogs (source: omia.org/home/). Remember though that we have been studying humans a lot longer than we have been studying dogs. What's more important is the level of risk - and in that respect, dogs are more likely to suffer genetic disease. According to one recent canine study of *152* genetic diseases (ie only a quarter of those known) about 40% of dogs carried a risk variant (journals.plos.org/plosgenetics/article?id=10.1371/journal.pgen.1007361). Compare that to this 2017 study on humans (medicalxpress.com/news/2017-06-sequencing-healthy-patients-reveals-rare.html) which looked at *5000 genes* and found that around 20% of us carry a risk variant. Of course, most genetic disease in mammals is recessive - ie you need two copies of the mutation for the disease to be expressed - and because humans avoid inbreeding, it is only in families where there are known genetic disorders that tests are done in an effort to avoid them eg with cystic fibrosis (CF). Around 1 in 35 Americans, for instance, carry the CF mutation - but only one in 3000 American babies are born with it. Most of have meet our partners and have babies without the need for genetic tests because the risks are pretty small. Unfortunately, in dogs, the carrier rate of some diseases is hugely higher as a *direct* result of the inbreeding/closed gene pools that are the norm in the kennel club breeding paradigm. The carrier rate of juvenile epilepsy in Lagotto Romagnolo is 28.3% - almost one in three dogs. The carrier rate of neonatal encephalopathy with seizures in the Standard Poodle is 17%... and so on. This ends up massively limiting breeder options, which leads to yet further inbreeding - a vicious circle that will continue until the Kennel Clubs truly wake up to modern, science-based conservation breeding. This is where the challenge now lies for dog breeding - and will ultimately prove its only route to convincing Governments that purebred dog breeding is relevant/appropriate in an increasingly welfare-driven society.

Where in the Dutch low can I find that the Raad van Beheer may not issue pedigrees to the brachycephalic breeds? It doesn't! This new law only says it's forbidden for all Dutch citizens to breed dogs (all kind of dogs) with too short muzzle/nose and indicates the measurements. The person (breeder) is personal in violation and approachable if this does happen, not the Raad van Beheer! The Dutch kennel club is in violation of the FCI rule because it says that if the parents of a have an FCI pedigree the kennel club has to issue pedigrees to the offspring as well, the offspring are entitled too it. The Raad van Beheer wants to be "the best boy in class" by making a statement to the Dutch government, not issuing pedigrees to brachycephalic breeds because.....well that's unknown, we really don't know why the RvB is doing this, nobody, not even the law of government told them to do this. We really have to find out why RD made this decision and what are his real motives, maybe an aspiration for politics in the future...who knows, we, the Dutch breeders really haven't got a clue.

My name is Georg Walther I’m a breeder and judge in Germany. Besides the present problems with the pandemic and the very serious incident in the Netherlands concerning the brachycephalic breeds, I would appreciate if all the kennel clubs had the same rules and regulations implemented by the FCI! For example judge’s abduction and designation as well as the welfare of dogs or how pedigrees get issued....just a few critical points to think about.

It is funny and sad at the same time. "We breed healthy dogs" and at the same moment they have in the videos dogs that are rasping, have little muzzles, big nose rolls etc. Also for most of this breeds you have to xray the back and hips etc, did anybody of these people/breeders that and dont take a dog in breeding program, when it shows bad things? I have a fci french bulldog. Parents won a lot of titles and are champions. I thought i bought a good healthy dog by a responsible breeder. Thats not! My dog has the hole spine deformed, struggling with breathing and he has cherry eyes. I most take him to a vet and this vet must do operations on him, that he can live a hopefully little nor al live as a dog. These deformations are not coming from now! Parents didnt have any xrays, struggling also with the breathing and all my informations to the breeder had nothing change. Still breeding. My dog lays next to me and is sadly looking. He has the best home, but nit the best body! He is such a sweet boy and he and other dogs dont deserve such a life! Stop talking about healthy dogs, when you dont do anything for it!

I think that all negative comments come from negative people who have problems with themselfs. With housband we have Boston terriers. Bostons, healthy bostons cames from good breeding program, are healthy dogs. Like at all other dog breeds. They can easy run 5 kilometers (3-4 at week). They breath normaly, like a human. They love sun, they enjoy their active life, they are happy dogs. Thank you for so positive and beautiful video to all involved!❤

Very nice video and very well said ... if they´re well bred (controlled breading), they´re healthy and long living, they CAN breath freely and be without any respiratory problems their whole life. They couldn´t survive thousend years, if they wern´t. We do not have the right to ban them, if they´s survived so many years..... Non of us is THE GOD to deside if they should live or not. Who come next ? Which breed ? Which animal species ? Which race ? ...
