Fond memories of all these brave hero’s. My own favorites Frank Aufrett and Bernie Persson personified everything about the sport, brave, tenacious, fearless entertainers who were dreadfully underrated and largely ignored by mainstream media and TV, particularly BBC who’d rather give bucket loads of air time to timid boring sports like Tennis and golf.

I was taken to the reopening meeting in 1964 by my speedway loving father. Took the next few years for granted until I became an irregular visitor for a while until part way into the 1970 season when I properly fell in love with the sport only for sad and tragic events to happen in the final 2 years. Much missed and not to be forgotten 🥺.

Nigel and Eric Boocock at THE SYDNEY SHOWGROUND in the 60s those were the days up against Jim Airey Bob Sharpe Ivan Mauger to name a few some of the BEST SOLO riding you would ever see John Sherwood the PROMOTER loved those POMMIES great DRAWCARD When the KANGAROOS v THE LIONS in the TEST MATCHES there would be 25000 to 30000 SPEEDWAY FANS at those meetings l was lucky to have been ONE of those people l would go down to THE PITS with my Uncle Geoff after the meeting speak to Nigel and Eric they ALWAYS had time for THE FANS I REALLY MISS THOSE DAYS

I was in the stands too. What a time that was at the Sydney Showground on a Saturday night when the solos of the Kangaroos and the Lions were the drawcard. I drove up from Wollongong and was always one of the first cars waiting for the gates to open. Jim Airey and Nigel Boocock were the greatest.
