I laughed at the not wanting to spend tons of cash for incremental gains, I'm thinking dude you have a decent. If that were true you would have a gaggia classic or breville. Lol 🤣

When I got the Decent, it cost me about $2300? I don't consider a machine that can do precise flow, pressure and temp profiling to fall under the diminishing returns/incremental gains bucket. It's an endgame machine with near infinite adjustability and feedback. There are cheaper machines with way less capability, and there are WAY more expensive machines - also with way less capability. IMO, there is no greater value for money if you are into espresso - than a Decent. In comparison to the Slayers, GS3s, even Rocket R60s, etc, it is underpriced given its capabilities.

Great video. I had the 270w which broke after only a few months. It was repaired and broke again. They then suggested i went for the 270 (not w, and prior to the wi being released), and the gear box went on this. This was also repaired and has now issues with the micro (larger adjuster ring) moving/vibrating making it useless. I am now in the market for a new one as i have lost heart in the Baratza so looking at the Atom (probably the 65 due to budget).

What kind of water should I use or does it matter with this machine since there’s no boilers
@DamianSheesh
@DamianSheesh 2 жыл бұрын
Water always matters!! It's most of coffee. I personally have an inline filtering system for my tap so I don't have to get spring water or anything. It works well, and I like it. I've experimented with 'making' 3rd wave water by adding minerals to distilled water to create a good profile for espresso and it was too fussy and I don't think it made enough difference for me to do that all the time. Scale is an issue whether machines have boilers or thermoblocks and distilled water doesn't make good coffee. It still needs regular maintenance to stay sparkly. In fact, I just descaled my decent last week with citric acid and hot water and the first flush was pretty green, so it took off a good amount of scale up in its bits. Good to go now for another six months or so!

I agonized over what grinder to pair with my gaggia classic, I ended up going with the Sette 30 plus the upgraded 270 mechanism which saved a bunch of cash. Your machine is an order of magnitude more expensive than my gaggia which in my mind makes your grinder upgrade very reasonable.

@DamianSheesh
@DamianSheesh 3 жыл бұрын
Lol where do you people come up with this stuff? This is a high-torque DC motor. It would hit its service RPM if I put rocks in the grinder. If anything, the lower load from lack of bean mass would cause a DECREASE in temperature as the plastic parts would be under less stress as they would have far less resistance. Now, with that out of the way - I never used this grinder as a single-doser. I loaded the hopper and used the stop at weight feature that I paid for. I only did it here as a side-by-side comparison.

I’ve had an Atom for a while now and love it! I don’t switch coffees every day or even every week. I dial in a batch a hopper and I’m good until I refill. This setup is just easiest for 2-4 cups per day for me and my wife. The Atom is close in height to the Decent, so it still works well visually on the counter. The Niche is very tempting though at the price and size. If I didn’t already own the Atom, I’d probably get a Niche.
@DamianSheesh

It's a me problem, but I hate the way the niche looks. My biggest issue though, is that I just am *not* a single dose kinda guy. I can't be bothered. If I want to single dose something special, I've got a very nice hand grinder for the occassion. Mostly, I want a great cup of coffee in as short a time as possible every dang morning.

I discovered, that when the coffee beans are already inside the mill and you start grinding, there is a lot of force required to start grinding which is almost moving whole grinder. So i tried switch on the grinder first and then throw the coffee beans inside (you can also lock the hopper first and then unlock it when the grinder is already on). That should, in my opinion, increase the life of the gear box. What do you think about it?
@DamianSheesh
@DamianSheesh 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it could extend the life somewhat, but whether it is a measurable impact on lifespan, who knows? Certainly load is greater for a split second as the burrs begin moving, but it is hard to tell if this causes slippage on the gear train or what. I think just plastic gears and heat are the enemy. Seeing as the bearing races broke down despite the fact that they should not experience any extra load at any given time is a good indicator. I'd love to know if the new gearboxes have a different design that is less susceptible to this problem.

@@MrMilanina The Baratza Sette grinder. In this video he has a few pretty serious issues with his grinder. The issue with the assembly mount moving and messing up your grind size while you are actually grinding is pretty ridiculous. However the biggest problem with this grinder and other Baratza grinders is the plastic around the motor and the burr mount (Sette 30 model) A lot of people have had issues with the plastic totally disintegrating after using for about one year or one and a half years.

@@mightymightyironhead Thanks for the clarification. I was concerned you were referring to Ceado as I am in a market for a new espresso grinder and weighing between Ceado E37S and Eureka Atom 75.
@mightymightyironhead
@mightymightyironhead 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrMilanina no problem you are very welcome. Both the Ceado E37S and Eureka Atom 75 dont have the same plastic parts that the Barazta grinders have, both grinders have metal mounts inside and are extremely well built. I personally like the Ceado E37S, its one of the best grinders on the market, however the Eureka Atom 75 is also excellent and i think that the choice will come down to a couple of very minor things, maybe even a cosmetic choice. The Ceado has 83mm burrs and is 500w, the Atom has 60mm burrs and is 450w. I think that the display on the Atom has a slightly better designed and maybe easier to use than the Ceado. Also the adjustment dial on the Ceado is a little different for some people, but its got the worm gears and this is very precise and does not need to be locked down like some grinders. Both grinders are very consistent, But one thing to be aware of with the Atom is the plastic impeller that sits on the top of the burr mount and spins during grinding to help to feed the beans to the burrs. If you don't have enough beans in the hopper, you can get pop corning. Also i do think that the Atom can have problems with retaining coffee powder and even broken beans inside the grinding chamber, the Ceado does not have this issue. To be honest, when you start to pick faults with such small things, its got to tell you something about the quality of these grinders.

I’ve been eyeing off the Sette Wi for some time now and it generally gets good reviews for the grind quality, but this is the first I have heard that the gears are plastic. That is making me think twice. Mind you I’ve had tools with plastic gears - an electric screw-driver that lasted for many years had plastic gears and it was the battery that died first. I suspect a lot of electric drills at the cheaper end use plastic gears, so maybe that is okay. I assume the Eureka has metal??? I’ve eyeing off the Decent too, but my ECM is running well. Your video shows the Decent is a great device for grinder testing.

With all the upgrades you've had as part of your warranty, is it safe to say that the internal mechanics of the grinder are closer to the 270wi hence the extract you got was more like a 270wi? They made it quite a bit bigger on their new pro, probably as an answer to the ceado, but honestly, the one on the 75 has to be felt to appreciated. It's extremely precise. It has no play whatsoever and has 'weight' to it. I make very small adjustments, but they're never trivial or difficult.
@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants 3 жыл бұрын
On the specialita it's probably even smaller, so a bit awkward, but it works alright I think a slight movement makes a very very small adjustment anyway. A lot of people don't like the design if you're switching between different brew methods since to get to drip grind it's like 2.5x around, so you just gotta be aware of how much you're changing and do the opposite to get back to the espresso range (similar to the Niche Zero as well, but that's a bigger knob with actual numbers at least), then you might have to make some fine tuning to get it perfect. The thing I like about My Vario is you can hear the motor sound change so it's kinda easy to get back into the espresso zone. Also settings don't seem to change around.
