I'm a beta tester and 'Decent Advisor'. I was an original backer of the failed Kickstarter project for the ZPM espresso machine and have been a spectator of Decent Espresso's creation of this fascinating machine, the DE1+ Pro. You can check em out at decentespresso.com.
I just got this sucker Friday March 16th, 2018 after a 6 year journey overall. Crazy cool.

Wow. So it lives. I heard this has some of the original IP from ZPM but it sounds like it went much further. The flow control paradigm sounds huge.

You should invest in a Higher End Grinder to match this amazing machine.

Can you steam and pull a shot at the same time? Is purging the steam wand delayed or pretty quick when you hit the button?
@DamianSheesh
@DamianSheesh 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Jensen you cannot brew and steam at the same time, but switching between either is immediate. As for purging, there is no need as the machine purges after use on its own (I've been going no purge now for weeks). Steam onset after hitting start is about one second. It's fast enough that I start it right in the milk.

Does it have two boilers with a pump for each, or is it a shared heating system like some lower end machines - Is there potential to be able to steam and extract at the same time with an update or is this a hardware limitation as well/are any of the Decent machines capable of this?
@DamianSheesh
@DamianSheesh 6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have boilers at all, which is why it heats up so fast and can make extremely fast temperature adjustments (and profiles). It uses a high wattage thermocoil to heat water on demand from the 'hot pump'. Another 'cold pump' adds unheated tank water where they meet in the mixing manifold to create the desired temp. The steam heater is independent of the thermocoil, however each one on it's own draws 1350W. It's a limitation of 110V power more than anything. So, the thermocoil and twin pumps add a ton of flexibility for pressure/flow/temp profiling at the expense of simultaneous brew/steam. The forthcoming CAFE model will allow for both simultaneously, and I believe it is theoretically possible for the 220V DE1+Pro to do this as well, but currently the 220V machine uses the extra juice to really ramp up steam power and cuts steaming time by more than half.

What kind of water should I use or does it matter with this machine since there’s no boilers
@DamianSheesh
@DamianSheesh 2 жыл бұрын
Water always matters!! It's most of coffee. I personally have an inline filtering system for my tap so I don't have to get spring water or anything. It works well, and I like it. I've experimented with 'making' 3rd wave water by adding minerals to distilled water to create a good profile for espresso and it was too fussy and I don't think it made enough difference for me to do that all the time. Scale is an issue whether machines have boilers or thermoblocks and distilled water doesn't make good coffee. It still needs regular maintenance to stay sparkly. In fact, I just descaled my decent last week with citric acid and hot water and the first flush was pretty green, so it took off a good amount of scale up in its bits. Good to go now for another six months or so!

is that sound normal for this machine? but still looks good
@johannes4518
@johannes4518 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the sound is normal and unique to this machine. At its heart, it’s a thermoblock and it mixes hot and cold water in the group head. This way, it’s more precise, but also a rotary pump wouldn’t work.

Hi Damian. I think you are the person who profiled the LR profile for the Decent. Is this true? Do you have a LR also? Thanks.

That honestly sounds horrendous! I understand you can't pull a shot and steam at the same time as well, is that the case?
@DamianSheesh
@DamianSheesh 6 жыл бұрын
spidiq8 the sound is the function of the pumps varying their flow rate. It's quite quiet in person and is actually really useful as feedback to how the shot is pulling. And no, you cannot brew and steam simultaneously with this model. There is, however, no wait to go from brew to steam or vice versa. It's a non issue for me. It may not be the machine for you and that's cool.
@spidiq8
@spidiq8 6 жыл бұрын
Damian Scisci I was curious if that was the case, it's simply for the price point of this machine that should be doable, even if they had to make it double boiler instead of HX, which I assume it is.
@DamianSheesh
@DamianSheesh 6 жыл бұрын
spidiq8 it isn't an hx. It's not even a boiler. Water is heated on demand via a thermocoil. Because of this, it allows things like temperature profiling, which is almost impossible to achieve with a boiler. I'd suggest checking out Decent's channel for more info on the guts of this machine!

Damian Scisci I can see it's not what I'm after, I like a bit of automation to make the process easier and guesswork less but not to this degree, thanks for the reply though.

The machine looks ok, I like a more traditional look myself. However the tablet looks pretty cheap and nasty. Can you upgrade it to something more stylish?
@DamianSheesh

The included tablet is fine. Just a simple, black, 8inch tablet. Perhaps it doesn't look great in this video because I left the screen protector on it. But yes, you can replace the tablet with others if you wish.

A very stylish toy, but can it deliver a better shot than my very low tech La Pavoni Europiccola? I don't need a computer tablet telling me what I can learn for a much lower price through trial and error. There's something to be said for the quest as opposed to instant gratification. My La Pavoni might be quirky, but I've developed an instinctual feel for its every quirk, and it delivers fantastic shots.

Dennis Bell I'd say with all honestly, that yes it can. It still requires a significant amount of skill and understanding to pull a great shot, but this machine allows for unprecedented experimentation with coffee coupled with a great deal of feedback. I'm all for traditional methods, but technology is the reason I use Photoshop instead of French curves, gouache and a ruling pen, and I use digital cameras rather than film.

The importance of the machine is the result... These graphics are for lighters. Its interesting but it's not necessary at least for me and for the most of the people.
@DamianSheesh
@DamianSheesh 6 жыл бұрын
This is not a machine for most of the people. It's also not just showing pretty graphics. I can program a shot that runs through various temperature, pressure and flow profiles to achieve results that have not been possible before. For instance, I'm now experimenting with a slow preinfusion with a pause to allow for full saturation, and then a declining temperature through the pull to boost sweetness as the coffee erodes. Not to mention the ability to emulate various types of machines (manual lever, E61, slayer) to suit different tastes or coffee beans/roasts. Many people just want to push a button and get coffee. This is not their machine.

Not really. Its just a fancy over complicated toy. Check out James Hoffman's review of the one they sent him. A lot of uncertainty on why you even need this complicated a system.
@taylorc1674

Ron Toto It does lots of stuff a $10,000 Slayer/La Marzocco can’t, but at 1/4 the price. It’s so small because it doesn’t rely on a traditional boiler, which also means more temperature stability. So that’s pretty exciting... also gets over the air updates, so it’s constantly improving sort of like a Tesla. Nobody is claiming it’s intended for a casual user who just wants “simple” home espresso though. It’s definitely aimed at enthusiasts who like to be on the cutting edge. And honestly, unless there are huge unforeseen problems with the technology, I think I a lot of espresso machines will mimic the underlying technology in this machine within 5-10 years.

@@DamianSheesh But does it have a lid? Whilst I do not care about sealed, I do not want dust particles from the air settling in my water. If the water surface is exposed to the air, I would have to do a water change every day. As for have not died yet, have you not seen the James Bond movie "You Only Die Once."?
