I saw them at the Abbottsford airshow in the '70's, still one of my favourite aircraft. I was also at the show when the very first Canadian F-18 flew.. very impressive, but there's still something about that chrome dart 104. Not to mention that howl

The F5 makes me think of Petter and his lightweight fighter concepts in the late 1940’s that led to the Gnat. The F5 essentially being the US Gnat albeit faster and a bit more sleek. Still good for not much else….

I'll never forget watching a CF-5 burn a hole in the sky. And I mean that literally. Hot, still, summer day, stratus overcast arouund 3-5000'. CF-5 on unrestricted climb left enough heat behind that it raised the dewpoint enough that there was a blue patch for a minute where it went though the layer.

How could three ground attack craft (Intruder, Corsair 2 and Skyhawk) be considered for use as a fighter? None of them were designed for AAW.

The F-5 freedom fighter is a very stunning looking little plane. If you want to know it’s real capabilities you should ask the Moroccans who flew it, as they have used it in an actual war that occurred between them and some rebel terrorists who had very effective soviet made SAM systems, it was nimble and precise at dropping unguided bombs and cheaper to maintain than most aircrafts. Although they never faced any air to air threats … They kept using it and upgrading it, until today. This plane is just so gorgeous I read a lot of articles mentioning it, although I couldn’t find any reliable sources about the nature of the latest upgrade it had which is the Tiger III, that’s used by the Brazilian and the Moroccan airforces.

6:06 Canadian procurement since the mid-60s in a nutshell: the superiority of the bullet is without question, but its high cost made it prohibitive to Canadian procurement officials, so instead they whittled a bit of flint and attached it to a long stick

Not true that it didn't work. As a first-ever iteration of a rough-field landing gear for a STOL supersonic plane, it worked superbly. On a more serious note, the Avian is defiantly too advanced for its time A carborn fiber body in the 1960s is so unheard of by that time even the larger aviation companies had struggles with that ... hmmm interesting

Surprised I didn't comment on this video last August (2023). I've been lucky enough to do some subcontracting work (automation), at the Bristol (Magellan) Rockwood Propellant Plant. Many of rhe buildings from the 60s are still standing, the facilities where all the CRV7s and Black Brants were made.

Just think if they had gone ahead and bought A-4's to replace the Banshee's . India had a carrier of similar vintage as the ' Bonnie ' that they just de- commissioned about 10 years ago . Canada needs to get their act together defence wise . At this rate you risk becoming Luxembourg with sh*ttier weather .

Sadly, there is a full Voodoo assembled shell sitting at the Airport in London Ontario on side parking tarmac.. YXU. Engines were removed but exist. Presumably it was to be rebuilt and put in to Londons Jet Aircraft Museum. YXU London Ontario Canada. Sadly, this sweetie has been sitting outside for years with NOTHING being done. Every time I go by I feel positively heartsick. Thought someone whould know.

So the F5 was a dog but we bought it anyway. The fact that Hellier was a former Northrup engineer and the F5 was from Northrup had 'nothing' to do with it, cuz you know, politicians never benefit from such contracts, right?

There's a good reason why supersonic fighters don't look like supersonic trainers and vice versa. Even the T-6A, the replacement for the T-37 trainer, is nothing like a modern fighter. Northrop was simply trying too hard to fit a square in a round hole. A good radar in the F-5 would have changed the c.g. of the aircraft too much forward, requiring a redesign of the wings, which would have required a total redesign of everything else, thus compatibility of parts with the T-38 (in order to save money) would have been impossible.
