Amongst this phenomenal movie it hits home like a baseball bat unearthen the truths that many broken homes try to hide. Even today i removed myself from West Auckland with a saddened heart that this generation only progress deeper into our dark past a generation that hasn't learnt from its previous broken community. Nevertheless all tribute to this beautiful reunion of a movie the best N.Z ever had in our cultural heritage helping our heritage to rise for a brighter future is my prey for our people.❤ Kia Kaha Whanua🙏

I remember when this dominated the nz charts. Was #1 for ages. Just bloody goood music that conjures up so much nostalgia of simpler times.

Key phrase, “ once we’re warriors “ This film had nothing to do with warriors, just thugs and weak men and as usual, women and children are the real victims.

Wish I could up-vote more then once. Rena was STUNNING in this. That last scene after Jake deals with Bully, and she take him on..... and then a crash-cut into the end credits with perhaps the best end-credits music I have EVER heard.

I hate when people compare these subhuman troglodytes to animals.....animals don't behave this way and are far more noble. They mate for procreation purposes only......

Along with Whale Rider, Once Were Warriors are among the stand-out movies in my collection. Awesome actors/storylines in both. Truly beautiful people who made some truly heart-breaking movies. They bring light onto so many once taboo subjects that affect the wonderful Maori people.

@8:31 Bader Drive Mangere before Paknsave. The old DB bar and hotel I remember where Paknsave is now. Mangere town Center with its big carpark before the Art Gallery and the OG sign. Road looks quieter then.

Wow. My family moved to Sydney in 1997 from Mount Roskill. We are Tongan and like South Auckland there was a Tongan community in Sydney (Mascot) where the Tongan Church was located. I was only 12 years old when we moved . Everything Ive seen in this video is exactly how I remembered Auckland...many good childhood memories 💙

Yes! Sydney was Tongan central. Back in the 70’s and 80’s - a lot of the Tongan diaspora were within Eastern Suburbs, Inner West Sydney and the city areas towards Northern Beaches. Lots of other islanders too but they ventured out more towards the south and the west sides of Sydney. Lots of Samoans around Liverpool/Campbelltown/Penrith/Blacktown ways.

Touching documentary... and definitely opened up my perspective on samoa. Otara boy. I feel like these people are my older cousins and uncles. Good to see what life was like back then, I wish i could time travel to the past. Im grateful for those who have come before us and even more excited for those that are going to come after us. God bless.

Watching this as a Samoan in the US. My family is originally from Savai'i but I've never been cause my grandpa passed before I was born. It's cool to see how our Samoan heritage still unifies us abroad. From Samoans in Aotearoa to the ones here out West. I hope we can all maintain continuous connection to our homeland.

I remember seeing this when it first came out. Hit like a ton of bricks I'm a kiwi, not Maori but my experience with the terror of domestic violence was so similar, such a shame that this happens in many families. Nice to see all the actors and crew many years later. Thanks
