It's tough for me to say the series is "better" considering Dark Crystal essentially set the ground work for animatronics and high level puppetry in film. All the movies that used this style of animatronics and puppetry owe a great deal to Dark Crystal. But I would deem AoR as being very worthy as a prequel series of the original movie. I wish Jim Henson could have seen the Gelfling in flight and tweaks to improve expressiveness thanks to modern technology. I think Jim Henson would be very proud of his successors and what they accomplished with AoR.
@darke20994 жыл бұрын
AKSBSU oh absolutely, I feel pretty certain that Jim would have been incredibly proud of the team making the series and would have been fascinated by the technological advances. He was always ready to embrace new tech, and develop it if it didn’t exist.

For my money, I do feel AOR is better then the original film. The movie had tremendous imagery and creativity, but I feel that's what people really remember it for. The story (and I saw this as a lifelong fantasy reader) is very standard fantasy fare, and Jyn and Kira are stock fantasy archetypes. But this is largely because they had to fit so much set up into a comparatively short film. The series was able to expand on these concepts, use far more advanced puppetry and effects to make things look real, and had ten hours to develop the characters. It simply was able to do more with the concepts, but the movie is still amazing for what it tried to do.
@darke20994 жыл бұрын
Eric Nierstedt cannot argue at all. The film is fantasy tropes and relatively simplistic storytelling. The series gets time to be nuanced and allow characters to grow and develop.

I'm pretty sure it's more than 50 years to the movie after season 1. Remember the state of the ruins that Jen and Kira find, and the prophecy was carved in the cliff face in them, and we haven't seen the prophecy yet. So unless the prophecy is actually already out there (it doesn't actually mention the Skeksis, though there are carvings of them on the same wall) there are probably hundreds of years left before the movie era.

I gotta say I like the show significantly more than the original film. I always had a respect of the universe the dark crystal created as well as the amazing puppetry of the first film but I feel like the pacing of the first movie was way off. Too slow with a lack of much happening in the middle of the movie. The show kept my interest all the way from beginning to end with puppetry techniques that are only improvements on what was before effects wise. I find all the new protagonist more engaging and connected with them more, going into depth with the skeksis we saw before as well as even seeing new ones was amazing to.

Fair call, though i have to take the film as a product of its time. Remember its a fantasy coming out in 1982, just on the tail of the 70's where film-making was often quite slow and ponderous. This one is definitely all about being a think-piece more than an action spectacle. That said, i really loved the new series. it all comes down to different tastes, i though Pegg and Isaacs were great. i thought Aughra was spectacular. For me it doesn't QUITE match the really somber tone of the original movie, but i thought it brough it to life and added so much to the world that i didn't care. If you tried to do 10 hours of the level of heft that the original movie had you'd be bored to tears. its very very slow and ponderous. This, to me is a more modern approach to storytelling and something that is telling a story about life, about war and about fighting back. The movie is about prophecy, rituals and survival. different strokes for different folks.

Fantastic review. I was worried about people's reactions to it being puppets. I wondered how it might not be taken as seriously because of that. Would modern audiences like and suspend belief enough to invest and watch this new prequel series. But in a parallel fashion, I feel that people instill that upon animated films as well. Brad Bird once said that animation is not a genre, it's a medium, and I feel that this is in that same aspect. I hope that a wide audience enjoys this, and embraces it, because having not even seen it yet, I am still hoping more seasons are in the works.

I'm fully with you there. the first half season i have seen didn't feel like it was going to leave time for a complete end to this chapter. I feel like we could have a few more seasons…or "Ages of" before the ultimate fall of the Gelfing empires. And i'd love that. I'd love this to be an ongoing story that chronicles the end of that proud people and the slow destruction of Thra. I also love that quote from Bird. I do believe that the method used to tell a story isnt the genre at all. Animated films can be drama, horror, comedy, action…whatever. and i'd love to see puppetry treated the same way.
