All the mold making videos for casting gold and silver into coins, etc.. the designs come out very flawed and unclean. Can I 3d print Stainless steel for a Mold to use for pressing gold with a hydraulic press machine? Is this possible you think?

When removing the screws, be careful! I had two screws get stuck and I stripped them trying to get them out. I've tried every trick to get them out and they are stuck. Nothing works. I have to buy a new vat I guess.

If we wanted to inset our own coins into the mold, are there specifications for the height of the coin that we need to conform to? Or does it not matter?
@NerdsMakers
@NerdsMakers Жыл бұрын
It doesn't really matter, my coins are about 45mm across and 4mm thick at their thickest point though
@Aracaifon
@Aracaifon Жыл бұрын
@@NerdsMakers thanks for the reply, I just wasn't sure because the sprue is a certain thickness and I wasn't sure if the sprue (not sure if that's the technical term for the place that makes the gap where you pour the metal or not but that's what I mean) needs to reach the thickness of the coin or if it will fill out nicely either way
@NerdsMakers
@NerdsMakers Жыл бұрын
@@Aracaifon Good point, the gate (that's what it's called, the part that connects the runner, or funnel, to the part) should be just smaller than the thickness of the coin, otherwise you may not get a good fill or have an unnecessary amount of cleanup.

I figured it out a long time ago and I think in the small run I did was just shy of $4 each. But it depends on how many you make, if you have the materials on hand already, grade of pewter, etc. With all the stuff already done I made my last batch of 18 for the cost of the pewter, $40.

It will only work with low temp metal like tin and pewter, the silicone is good to about 560º. I use a laser thermometer to keep the pewter at around 500º (no small task since my hotpot goes higher and has no thermostat built in).

That's not small that's extra huge. Small is several people sharing one room as a makerspace. 34 people per classroom, three classrooms sharing a 14 x 16 ft room upgraded from an 8x8 room. This is the largest maker space the school has had and is roughly the size of a garage bay.
