For anyone who ever reaches Terceira there is an obscure Lajes War Cemetery near Praia that has 46 RAF and 1 RN British personnel buried there. There was a horrible crash late in the war filled with married and long term men headed home. It occurred 03/14/1945 less than 60 days before the end of the war in Europe. 19 men died in that crash. I absolutely regret that I lived there for 21 months in '71 to 01/02/73, and had no idea it existed of I would have visited. US WWII dead were all repatriated, but the Commonwealth War Graves Commision maintains that cemetery still. Operationally, that building site you all are on was the US Navy base for about 3 squadrons of sub chasing aircraft during the 60's and 70's. The US Navy had a hectic flight schedule of constant monitoring of the Atlantic chasing Soviet subs. They did more flights than the USAF in volume. The French SST landed at Lajes in December, 1971. Pompidou met Nixon. I had the honor of shaking Nixon's hand there on the field on perhaps Dec., 27th, 1971. The SST was not yet permitted into US airspace at the time, so not only did I have pictures, but I got to see it long before the folks back home. It was quite tall, by the way. We all know that the US is off the Gold Standard, but you do NOT know that during that meeting Nixon first announced to the world directly to Pompidou that the US would NOT pay for US currency in gold. Effectively, Lajes is where the first step implementing the transition off the Gold Standard occurred. Right across the runways, over on base. At that time the Terminal was directly across from you. I don't think bull fights were mentioned. Terceira has a long historical tradition of bull fights in the streets. The lives of the bullsare spared, and the area is severely limited during this event. It is a huge social event. No official fighters exist. Any individual brave enough can jump into the street and run around with the bull. Look up some YT videos if you are interested. It is quite the spectacle. This Terceira bull fighting commemorates the Battle of Salga. On 07/25/1581 the locals were faces with 600 armed Spanish soldiers making a landing. There were perhaps 2000 total people on Terceira and absolutely no military, just a small militia watching the sea. The island had a large semi-wild population of bulls, however. The militia and the farmers drove these bulls in a large force onto the beach where their natural aggression tore the men to piece as they quickly retreated back to the boats and back aboard their ships. There was no Wikipedia in 1971 when I heard of it, but the article about the Battle of Salga is now available.
