I made a dozen sets of spurs 30 years ago. I would match my spur quality against these, but I never came close in the silver department. The hardest part was cutting the silver and putting it on, Tom Balding is a master!

Another gentleman that has given a great deal of knowledge and I say knowledge because teaches old Cowboy engraving and craftsmanship is Jeremiah Watt. That old dog there has given a ton to the Cowboy industry. He’s The Godfather on Cowboy engraving. I have found that you have to get out there and gather as much as you can from all these greats. There styles, there Maker’s Mark, the way their work flows and really appreciate it like art. That’s what it looks like to me. That’s what I’m finding. I have used the social distancing time to try and learn to make a set of hand-made spurs. Well I’ve found that can be done. But now how do I make them look like something that someone would want to wear? There plain! So hats off to you craftsman that are willing to teach us trying to learn, and willing to take a second to educate; because it turns to knowledge. But all I am at this stage of the game is a guy with a welder and a cutting torch. Up next in the Lind up. Block letters and solder. Try and keep it simple to start with! Thanks again and this is the exact platform I this KZfaq is for! All these old boys that build spurs are fit cats too, and ride bicycles, and hike all over. Tom, Jeremiah, both avid cyclist and fit dudes. Older dudes but still the real McCoy you can tell and there getting up there a little. No disrespect but they have to close to retirement all of these old boys. Wouldn’t want to tangle with any of them old boys right now, let alone 20 years ago! Lol -maybe the Old West is in their blood and souls and comes out in that leather and steel and makes our jaws drop to the floor with amazement as we all say the same thing “that’s beautiful”. Or something to that effect. There’s only a handful of these guys that can make it that way. I just hope there is another generation out there coming to keep the American Cowboy in gear. Thanks again! Colin Idaho

This is a great video Tom! I think there are a lot of folks that don’t have the right size spurs out there! I love your work. Folks do to I see it’s 5 months to get a set of spurs! Good for you! I’m glad business is good! I know you best for those dots on your bits! So your not just awesome at those spurs, I see you put a real nice touch and make a heck of a bunch of bits too. They say a spur is one thing, but a bit will make you famous! Lol Your workmanship and that of your people is amazing! I have watched lots of your videos and the “How it’s made”had to have been one of my favorites. Thanks! I enjoyed your video with you and Billy Klapper as well! What a joy to watch! Now there is 2 legends there! You and Billy, and I’m going to put Bruce Cheaney right in there too, for one of the latest greats! He’s a craftsman too and he’s earned his “spurs too” like you and Billy. Thanks again Tom! Stay warm up that in Sheridan and I’d like to get that way and see your store sometime. It looks as beautiful as the stuff you make partner!. You folks keep warm up in WY this winter and the American Cowboys in gear; afraid your both become less and less unfortunately. Happy trails! Colin Idaho

When a animal is shot with those quills they need a vet so they can be sedated that shit hurts for them to be awake and your fighting him to remove them yourself.

Dont be a plonker. Your asking what is a vet going to do? OK Einstein let me explain. Keep the dog still is number 1. Number 2, he wont be holding the dogs mouth shut so the quills inside the mouth won't cut deeper. Don't act so smart and think before you call people an idiot. You have needles in your mouth and inside, and some plonker closes your mouth to pull the outside needles out. Lets see your reaction.

@@donnysbackroadoutdoors5088 pretty sure he makes every part himself. Yer talking about the overlay I’m pretty sure but he has a few videos showing how to stencil and cut out the overlay. I’ve seen people use them fancy engraving machines that plug in to a computer then cut out the outline that way but most of them fellers I’ve tried to learn from over the years don’t even believe computer engraving and all. But they sure do make everything look as perfect and uniform like it was all done with tapping a few buttons. I do it for the art involved it’s therapy for me but I’m never going to be anywhere as good as these folks. Not many people around where I live in Texas wanting to teach just anyone and I don’t blame them. But I started learning all I was able to after my working spurs got stolen at college because I was too busy to take them to my pickup when I put my bronc spurs on my every day boots for a rodeo. Where I’m from most spur makers had at least a one year wait list last set was two years. But I wanted to learn it so tons of trial and error and just keep praying I get some learnin from the masters of the art. Anyway most makers won’t wanna do overlay work on spurs they didn’t make but I’ve seen crazier things I recon. I think Montana silversmith sell all kinds of overlay stuff but I’m not 100 percent positive they do because I never bought precut overlay work. I just keep trying to get better at cutting my own but I don’t require much flash since I got older lol
