Wolves have actually won 5 levels as they won the third division and third division north in the days when the third tier was split north & south and the fourth division hadn't even been invented. I really enjoyed the seasons in the third & fourth divisions with Wolves as we got to go to a whole lot of new grounds. With a few exceptions, home fans are also friendlier to visiting supporters in the lower tiers.

Interesting video Sam, thanks! I remember Carlisle's one season in the top flight as my team, Luton Town, were promoted with Carlisle the previous season and relegated with them and (surprisingly) Chelsea, a year later. Spurs narrowly avoided the drop in 1974/75 by winning their last match and finishing just one point ahead of Luton.

A strange but true fact is in 1982, the season Sheff United went on to win the 4th division title they played Bradford City on a cold February night in front of 24,593 at Bramall Lane. The same night reigning champions, reigning European Champions and league leaders Liverpool were playing a division 1 league match at home to Birmingham City in front of 24,224. Hard to believe that any team in the bottom division could attract more than Liverpool playing on the same night when they were in their pomp winning everything.

Two of those clubs have won a major English trophy. That being Barnsley who won the FA Cup in 1912 while in Division 2 and Swindon Town who won the League Cup in 1969 while in Division 3

Portsmouth(my team!) in addition to having won all four major league titles, are also the only club to have achieved THAT, and won the FA Cup in both the old AND the new Wembley stadiums.....as we know, five teams have won the four titles, and some clubs have won the FA cup at both old and new Wembley stadiums, but the only club to have achieved both of these two feats is Portsmouth......... and if you want odd facts.. Portsmouth(good old Pompey!!) held the FA Cup for longer than anyone else in football history, from 1939 to 1946..(mind you, there was a small matter of the Second World War which intervened along the way...) also the record attendance for an FA Cup final at the new Wembley is still held by Pompey, being the 89,874 for the 2008 final vs Cardiff City......also the record attendance for the Checkatrade cup final at Wembley also involved Pompey, 85,021 vs Sunderland......in addition, the only league football match in history without a single corner kick to either side was between Portsmouth and Newcastle United, and that game, unsurprisingly ended as a 0-0 draw.... the very first league match to be played under floodlights was also between Pompey and Newcastle United, both of these events taking place at Fratton Park in the early 1950's....and Portsmouth's great Jimmy Dickinson played 764 league games, more than 80 cup games, and 48 England international games and never once in that entire illustrious career did he receive a booking or sending-off.....we also hold the record for the highest number of goals scored in a Premier League match when we beat Reading 7-4 in Sept 2007.....Pompey till I die!!!

Northampton's was a real rags to riches and then back to rags story. Starting in the 4th division they were promoted in 1962, 1963 and 1965, then relegated in 1966, 1967 and 1969 to end up where they'd begun. In their first season back in the 4th they had a decent FA Cup run that saw them reach the last 16 - only to be drawn against Manchester United and a George Best returning from suspension with a point to prove - which he did in emphatic style by scoring six goals in an 8-2 victory.

I support Walsall even though my Scottish Side (Annan Athletic) has done more to justify their existence. Like supporting Walsall is a Sisyphean task out of want more than anything. Like they slide the rock to the top of the hill and they just let it drop. There's no drive, there's no passion, there's seemingly no point to Walsall. I struggle to foresee any side with less wanting of success than Walsall. You could replace Walsall with seemingly any side to ever exist, you could bring in Old Etonians and you'll see more of a successful football side. I support them but I don't know why? Like if they cared, if Walsall had any pathy in the slightest that'd be something but they're apathetic, they're slackers, they're scrubs. Anyway, I've supported them for 2 decades now, I hate Wrexham with a passion now. The entirety of Wrexham are morally destitute prostitutes and so is Canada. Like Annan, Annan, this side, this side had no means of survival, should've been relegated, but they fought and they fought and they somehow survived by conceding like 3 less goals than the opposition, that's excitement, that's meaning, that's football. Walsall could never do that. Walsall could never excite. (This has been the sporting equivalent of absolute negging, I say I support someone and then say absolutely nothing positive.)

Not a bad summary of being a Walsall fan. If things continue on their current trajectory I'm going to have to chose between Walsall and Rushall Olympic when they end up in the same division. Thing is, I was lucky, I was 10 when we got promoted under Nicholls in 95 and that kick started one of the best 10 years in the club's history and made me a fan for life, it baffles me that we have any fans under 15 these days. Well the football league began with 12 teams, the second division was added almost 20 years later with another 12 teams. You have to go to 1958 for 4 divisions of 22 teams. The English pyramid these days has approximately 13 tiers, and 6th tier and lower becomes regionalised.

I'm a Spurs fan but the "only non league team to win the FA Cup (after The Football League was established)" isn't the great achievement it's sometimes made out to be. @@royston8044 We (GTFC) won the 2nd division tittle in 1933 - 34 season. At the time we set the record record for the most number of wins, 27. We scored 103 goals, a record that still stands to this day. We famously put TEN goals past Manchester United in two days, they finished one point from relegation to the 3rd. div. Pat Glover scored 42 goals in 39 appearances which was also a record that stood until Kevin Phillips of Sunderland beat it, but they played more games then. We also hold the record attendance at Old Trafford when we played Wolves in the FA cup semi-final, 76,962 in 1939. I remember when 3 teams got successive promotions in the same seasons from the old Div 4 all the way to Div 2, and 2 of them - Southend United and Cambridge United - actually led the table some months into the next season. Southend led around the turn of the year and Cambridge were top for a number of weeks and made the play-offs. The other team involved, Grimsby Town, also had a decent enough season and were never in much danger of going down.
