Respect to presenters, but...Unfortunately this meaningful subject with its quality articulated presentation is VERY PRIMITIVE ONE in a chapter Subjective Terms (30:46). We people do try to describe impressions with analogies, paraboles, etc. In a sense of this techno- scientific statements in this chapter, could be that prose and poetry and art interpretations are also a bunch of meaningless nonsense. In teh most cases I can not hear any differences among cables - especially not with power cords. I also did (with audio friends) AB blind tests which showed that differentiation between cables is pure guessing - the interconnects can be exception in some cases. But differences among components - lets say amps are significant, especially if you have a sensitive full range drivers (in a speaker) directly connected to amp, especially without banana port/ plugs. So how can a man decsribe it. We all know that two amps can measured pretty much the same (impedance, frequency response), but their music presentation can be significantly different. I hope I do not have to remind that the same is with instruments - "no wood sounds like a wood." Best regards, Maj - not an engineer (unfortunately), but sociologist of culture

Terms like forward and silky are never useful, and audio fidelity has nothing to do with poetry. Further, amplifiers that measure the same will sound the same. Claiming otherwise is to believe in magical parameters that audio engineers do not understand or know about. But you are correct that most published audio specs are incomplete. This video delves deeper into that: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNyZpciml7mrioE.html

@@EthanWiner unfortunately, there is still a lot of ambiguity and undefined concepts even among experts and evaluators. However, in order for an amateur to be able to discern from measurement data what he can expect sonically, longer experience or schooling is necessary. Then there is the matter of room acoustics. And most of them don't even think about that. For example, people go to the pet store, buy a fish they like, and only then - later - do they find out what they bought, and many times it is the wrong fish for their aquarium or the way they care.
@EthanWiner
@EthanWiner 12 күн бұрын
The only ambiguity with audio is the field of perception, which of course does vary from person to person and moment to moment. There is nothing unknown about how to define and measure the fidelity of audio equipment. If you don't understand that, you really need to watch the Damn Lies video I linked yesterday. But again, you are correct about room acoustics. People obsess trying to choose between DACs that all sound identical, with distortion and noise too soft to possibly hear, while ignoring numerous 20-35 dB peaks and nulls in their room.

@@EthanWiner Very interesting, but very condensed. Most of the topics from the proposed video are more or less familiar to me, but not all of them, and even less that I would be able to conclude from what was presented whether and how the measurements would show differences between the devices, which a person must then interpret, what this means for him, for his sound register, for his perception and description of it? It seems to me that you don't understand the latter, that a person is not, for example, a gramophone needle that only perceives and passes over mechanical stimuli, but automatically interprets them, if nothing else already at the level of pleasure - it suits me / it doesn't suit me, I like it / doesn't like it. A whole poetics or conceptually determined professional expressions and descriptions can follow from this. It is an interpretation of the symbolic. Or to put it another way. What should someone do with letters or notes if they can't read them? Someone who knows them will automatically hear the interpretation of the symbolic in their head and will be able to express it. The richness of expression is conditioned by further cultivation. The same applies to the pile of technical statements and graphs that come from the measurements of hi-fi devices. I have been following the ASR (Audiosciencereview) channel for three years, as well as other channels where things are shown measurements of the devices. Most often, the frequency response of the speakers and the purity of the signal through the devices. I have nothing to help with the latter, if the device's signal is correct or perfect, what does this mean for the character of the sound? Nothing. And if I understood your video correctly, based on one viewing so far, it's all about the harmonies. With a hi-fi system, the problem is not only in the harmonies and distortions of amplifiers and source devices, but also in how the speaker will react to everything it receives, and how it will be able to convert electrical impulses into reliable, high-quality mechanical movements. It's the same, only in reverse, with a microphone or turntable needle. And then there is the mysterious damping factor for us laymen... how exactly does it affect the sound? You didn't say anything about it. So I can't have any idea how the damping factor affects the sound unless you interpret it. For example, quite a few modern budget DACs measure excellently (as far as basic measurements are concerned - signal linearity, noise, distortion). But when I hear them, they sound bad, not natural. Notes mostly have only borders, without content, density, or body if you wish. Like a nut without a kernel. Instead of the sound of a high-end acoustic guitar with high-end strings, what comes out is a sound like a crap - cheap guitar with cheap plastic strings. So what is missing from these measurements of these technically excellent DACs on the ASR channel? In practice, tonal fullness can be solved by changing the op-amps at the DAC. I assume that the DAC modified in this way would be the same in basic measurements, but some measurement should show the difference between changing the op-amps and the resulting interpretation (character) of the sound. Measuring harmonies? How, how is such measurement performed? An established audiophile/reviewer told me that he talked about this phenomenon, which he himself cannot explain, with an excellent speaker designer, who explained it to him through the prism of the harmonics of amplifiers and their relation to speakers and, of course, in relation to the human audio register. He said that there was absolutely too much information for him to be able to understand and summarize well after a single explanation... So my conclusions would be two: - that for someone who has no idea about hi-fi and electronics, it doesn't matter if he is presented with a bunch of documents of quality measurements or a subjective description of a hi-fi critic, if he has no background and experience; - I would be happy (probably many others too) if you could upgrade the existing video by showing all these measurement options in practice, to record and measure some chords on three identically tuned guitars - a high-end acoustic guitar, a solid guitar , and on an inexpensive guitar with inexpensive plastic strings and presented and interpreted them to us. It would be great if you could then build on this to measure recordings across different devices and speakers. I know it's an extensive job, but with this, the hi-fi community would get an important, quality, authentic (video) document. Namely, we (laymen and also non-specialized electrical engineers) have nothing to help ourselves with short descriptions of the possibilities of sound measurements to know that they exist, if this is not comprehensively demonstrated in concrete examples. Do you agree? I would have some more questions for you, but it would be too much. Do you have some other- email contact perhaps? I am not native English speaker and I hope all this is understandable. Kind regards and with respects, Maj
@EthanWiner
@EthanWiner 11 күн бұрын
Your English is perfectly fine. Better than most native English speakers. You claim I don't understand how measurements would show differences, then you admit that you can't read the "letters and notes." I assure you that I understand all of this perfectly. The key thing you are missing is the null test. That shows all differences between two devices. Not just the differences, but also the extent of the differences. And from that a knowledgeable audio expert can know how audible those differences are. You asked how damping affects speakers - lack of damping allows ringing - and asked for more details in a future video. All that you seek, and much more, is in my Audio Expert book: ethanwiner.com/book.htm

Thank you Ethan for making all the effort to educate the public, it’s much needed. Unfortunately, I only saw this video after I paid $4000 for this new Nelson pass first watt amplifier to replace my perfectly fine $500 Yamaha all in one amp assuming I can hear something different. I have not received the delivery yet, but I regretted already. I always considered myself relatively rational, but after watching so many seemingly decent KZfaq channels and listening to seemingly decent people’s opinions on KZfaq claiming they are blow away by the sound, I was hooked. Only found later in an interview, Nelson pass saying it’s just entertainment. Quote “e objective needs of amplifier users are largely solved on a practical level, and as McLuhan perceptively noted, when that happens, we turn our technology into art.”

I've invested in the room treatments and I'm using fairly modest speakers that i've had for 23 years and a SVS Subwoofer. As the room is small i've focused on broadband absorption but I might liven it up with some strategic diffusion if it ends up a too dead for my liking.

Ethan NO, avoiding all early reflections is not the answer. We need the front and corner secondaries for depth and spaciousness and power response. Like most, you comment only about frequency response and little about the spatial response - you mention imaging across the whole width of the room and deeper than the speakers themselves but you don't explain why that happens, what causes that. It is the early reflected from front and front corners.

Your opening assertions at 1.18 are presented as statements of fact when in reality they are just your opinion. For example wire CAN add noise if it isn't effectively shielded and is placed in an electrically noisy environment. That noise may or may not be in the audio range but even if it s the RF range then it can be added to the signal and may (or may not) affect the audio equipment that it is connected to.
@EthanWiner

Wire itself can't add noise other than Johnson noise that exists everywhere, though you are correct that *outside* noise can impinge on a wire and get into audio devices that way. But you also need to see this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZreEncZnuKjWnZs.html

When listening, I prefer not to put up with the faint background signal noise (noise floor) One should try pressing pause or mute, and from the MLP, if one is unable to differentiate whether the systems on or off that's telling you, your cables are crap. When friends or guests come around rather than showing them how loud the system goes, I prefer to press pause/mute and show them how quiet it goes. None of them gets it, of course 😂 After auditioning three separate AVR's, the same ambient sound of the room was still present! It was only on the third occasion when I finally purchased shielded cables that the noise floor in my small room finally came down to satisfactory levels. Cables often act as antennas for attracting RF, and the longer the cable, the better the antenna. Probably explains why when I used to disconnect my heights and surrounds within 10 minutes, the faint background signal noise (RF/EMI) within my small room used to disappear/dissipate. Even though I'm now using a high-performance arcam avr20 with matching power amps, at the time, as well as my original budget Sony SDR dn1080 AVR most of my testing came from when I was auditioning mid-price Japanese AVR's Never mind the cost, do you really think I would go through all this work not once, not twice, but on the third time to get it right... If interested, here's a 3-minute video of what I went through. Please bear in mind that I'm no videographer 😂 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rd2FY8dks8y2gas.htmlsi=8RcX4g8b07jjmYEr
