Bravo! I'm not sure if you're familiar with him, but Steve Howe (the guitar player for Yes) has two "classical electric guitar" tracks on his 1979 solo album that might be worth checking out. You nailed it Winer. And then comes Var 6, sublime. I don't know what that is you're doing, but it's perfect for that passage. And Var 7, the big finish, you remind me of Romero playing Rodrigo. Thanks for this upload.
@EthanWiner7 жыл бұрын
In the slow Variation 7 I used an E-Bow for infinite sustain, with tone and vibrato settings to emulate a Theremin. The conductor talks about that a bit at the beginning of the video, before the music starts.

Very well done Ethan! I liked the effects and the care and work you put into the arrangement. I am still learning the range of instruments, but did you have to do any transposing of notes? Or is the Cello and guitar's range similar?
@EthanWiner9 жыл бұрын
Doug Holmes I did have to transpose in a few places, and I wrote my own part for the longer cadenza in Variation 5. I talked a bit about transposing in my Rococo Preparation video:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b51xdcxlsNWXnYU.html
@Dholmes10229 жыл бұрын
Ethan Winer I forgot to look at that video again. Sorry! You did a very good job though, I did a arrangement to a medium skill piano piece for Concert Band, and it was tough enough. Converting a part for a solo Cello part from one of the great composers to electric guitar is no small feat!
@TheZooman226 жыл бұрын
Simply amazing Ethan....just watching the videos on acoustic treatments for rooms and I just happened to see this. I too am a guitarist, and I am guessing that is an older Telecaster , with a humbucker in the bridge, maybe a 59'.
@EthanWiner6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I forget the exact year I got my Tele, but it missed being a "pre-CBS" by a year or two. It originally had a white pick guard and the usual Tele rhythm pickup. My friend Phil Cramer made the black pick guard, and also routed out the body for me to install the Gibson humbucker. Both of those were done long ago, in the 1970s. Phil is a really amazing guitar player, and an especially cool guy. If you care (with some great guitar playing at the end): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/asV_m7pqqJ2Zop8.html

Is this all off the Decca Ethan? Or did you have that additional outriggers for room sound? Obviously I can see the audience pair on the bar too. Great sound, great playing
@EthanWiner8 жыл бұрын
+Russell Cottier The venue recorded seven microphones: five in the Decca Tree, plus two more high up and off to the sides. I ended up using only those outermost two mics for stereo, but I used the center mic for the conductor's spoken introduction (only) because that picked him up the best. Besides the two stereo mics, I also recorded the output of my DigiTech effects box to a Zoom H2 portable recorder, and mixed that in with the stereo mics during video editing because the guitar sounded a bit too distant in the microphones. I'm glad my friend Peter Hodgson suggested I record the direct output in case the sound wasn't perfectly clear! The mix really needed that. Also, during the extended cadenza (solo) a baby in the audience started crying loudly for half a minute. Fortunately the orchestra wasn't playing then, so I just muted the mics for that entire section, and you'd never know about the baby!

The guitar tones at the 10 minute mark are plain amazing (and remind me of Steely Dan's Elliott Randall) - just shows how many genres & tones Teles can cover...what year is that Tele (my guess would be late 60s - early 70s)?
@EthanWiner3 жыл бұрын
Thanks DW. Yes, my Tele is early 1970s, though most of the tones are from the DigiTech RP355 I programmed for each section. This video is about my preparation for the concert: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b51xdcxlsNWXnYU.html

Great! At a few spots the FX choice was... surprising..., but it always worked out well. This piece can definitely use lots of humour, I rather miss that in most performances with cello. If only one of them had the guts to end it with a “booing” glissando after the final note...
@EthanWiner9 жыл бұрын
leftaroundabout LOL, my wife hates that big slide at the end, but you're the third person to appreciate the humor. Yes, I'd love to see some famous cellist do that at the end of the Dvorak Concerto!

Thanks Ethan. Though my Classical Guitar instructors did not like hearing about it, I loved to take Classical pieces (after lessons of course) and play the pieces on the electric guitar with different amp settings (reverb, etc.) and various pedals and sometimes the e-bow. I was just after the different sounds that are available on the electric guitar. I loved this performance. I wish that I had learned the Cello, but after trying piano, flute and the banjo, I decided that my favorite instrument is the guitar and stayed with one instrument (though I like to use the classical, steel string, and electric). (But, in truth, I came from a family that discouraged the arts.) I Did you use standard tuning and 440 Hz? Anyway, I just wanted to thank you and the orchestra, and say that this was beautiful. I loved your voicings. Also, that's a nice looking Tele.
@EthanWiner3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice comments, Jake. Yes, standard A-440 tuning. I too like pop arrangements of classical works. A few years ago I did a "prog rock" arrangement of Dvorak's 8th symphony, 4th movement. I even made a web page to describe the project: ethanwiner.com/dvorak8-4.htm In the 1980s I owned a software company, and many of the employees were musicians. After work one of the programmers, Nash Bly, and I used to rehearse the first movement of the Brahms Double Concerto. He'd play the bass part on my Fender bass, and I'd play the cello and violin parts on my Telecaster. It was fun! More recently I made a synthesizer version of St. Seans The Swan, and a full-on pop version of his Allegro Appassionato for cello and orchestra. If you care, those and more are on my Tunes web page: ethanwiner.com/e-tunes.html
