I have a hard time with videos like this that don’t make it clear to average users just how incredibly unlikely such attacks are to be made let alone carried out successfully. For example, just the other night I was talking with a Swan custody expert about multi sig and security issues a lot like this and he freely admitted the biggest problem is the range of users. On the one end are users like the guy making this video who understands wallets in detail. On the other end are millions who think the bitcoin is actually in the wallet. My fear is those low resolution users hear stories like this and are scared away. When in reality this is by far the most secure method anyone before in history ever had. And tldr, this whole video boils down to use your hardware wallet for long term cold storage not lots of little daily transactions. Saved you half an hour.

It’s impossible to produce content that caters to everyone - I agree with that sentiment. A good portion of my audience is further up the learning curve and appreciate this level of detail vs. oversimplified tidbits about what to do/not to do, so this type of content is as you might expect catered to… wait for it… my audience. A good hardware wallet is indeed the most secure way for a user to secure their bitcoin and at no point here do I suggest the contrary. In fact I have an entire playlist and hundreds of videos dedicated to advocating exactly that.

No the passphrase could be derived from the same attack, it may just take more than 1 transaction for the information to be derived.

Absolutely! This attack is based on the finite list of seed words. Your paraphrase can be anything, making this attack considerably more difficult if not impossible.

In order to take advantage of the information given in this video, one would need a knowledge base that most don't have. It was a bit of an education just to learn how to self custody, but to now go further and learn to use the tools needed to verify certain coded information, opens up a new world of expanded self custody responsibility. I suppose that's the cost of reliance on one's self to secure your future. There are many gaps in my understanding of the full scope of self custody, that I had better get on the ball. Thank you for the alarm.

It doesn’t. Your private keys are leaked by Dark Skippy through the transactions themselves. So passphrases won’t prevent that, because they are needed to sign the transaction itself.

This is a great video Ian thanks for making it. The more things like this come up the more I'm convinced that multisig is basically the only way to go past a certain threshold of money that you could keep on a single hardware wallet. Feels like there are so many different edge vulnerabilities and no single perfect device.

If anyone has trouble using Terminal (on any OS), remember that Chat-GPT is ultra powerful when asking her question about Terminal. Ask for example: "How to apply a SHA256 on a file using Windows Terminal (explain step by step)", and you'll get a very detail explanation. With ChatGPT, using Terminal is a breath.

WoS does not have direct connectivity to the fiat system as far as I know. You would need to send your bitcoin to an exchange and then transfer to bank from there. Most of the big exchanges now support Lightning so you should be able to deposit directly as a Lightning transaction.

Isn't that the point at which the block template is customized? I was planning to install Umbrel and run their bitcoin node and their public pool.

I don't understand why i cannot generate a bitcoin address here instead of having it generated somewhere else. I sold my bitcoin on coinbase or converted it to usdc I don't trust COinbase anymore and I do not want to leave crypto on coinbase,. I want a self custody bitcoin wallet that where a bitcoin address is generated and where none of the other stuff should be required

The idea here at least for now is that you have your self-custody wallet and then you’re generating an address from that which you’re then inputting here. I agree having a self-custodial wallet built into an exchange like this would be useful and it might be closer than you think

I personally use ColdCard and Foundation Passport for the most part. Blockstream Jade is another great device and has a more affordable price point which makes it an excellent addition (or additions) to a multisig quorum

I keep trying to follow people, but when I go back to my profile, I don’t have anybody listed that I’m following and when I go back to check on that account, it says I’m not following them. It’s like my follow requests are not sticking? What am I doing wrong?
