Nice and safe no homeless. I think you have a greater chance being hit by a car sitting so close to the kerb with no protection barrier, than being attacked by a homeless person.

The first church you talked about actually wasn't a church. It is the Salt Lake, city and county building. It is magnificent!

It's extremely important to note the Jenny Lake Lodge is a very expensive place to stay but if you have the money it's well worth it. It's an exclusive resort as well so just keep that in mind. You also have to book way in advance to be able to get into this lodge. It sits on the Jenny Lake trail and many trails in the Tetons that you can pick up right from that spot which is incredible. You will not have to drive.
