Pretty fish , is the beat better with the higher water levels or do you prefer it lower

Hi Steve, the upper beat operates well throughout the season in high or low water whereas the lower beat operates much better at low levels in the spring. 👍🏻

@CameronChapmanКүн бұрын
Many thanks for your kind words @@user-xs5nt9qj3i much appreciated. Those fresh run grilse have very soft lips, so if they don’t take a good grip of the fly, the hook tends to pull through the lip, after a minute or two. Using wide gaped hooks is the best solution but there is no guaranteed success when the feisty grilse arrive but there is guaranteed to be lots and lots of fishy fun!
@clarkson7777Күн бұрын
Bob was unlucky wit the first fish but made up for it with that grilse. top man. there was a lot of water going over the wear Cameron. But we have had a lot of rain over the past few days in Scotland, haven't we. There must be a lot of salmon going through at the moment, but it's not reflected on the fish caught on the web site.
@CameronChapmanКүн бұрын
Many thanks @@clarkson7777 The amount of water coming over the Weir is dictated by SSE or whoever the company is that generates electricity at the dams on the Garry, the Moriston and particularly the pump storage site at Foyers. There is only one significant tributary on the system which is not subject to a hydro dam and that is the Endrick. It can run very high when the rain is in the west catchment area but its influence on the height of the loch is relatively small. By stark contrast, the pump hydro system at Foyers will lift the height of the loch immediately and the effect upon the weir is obvious, for prior to power generation at Foyers, the sluice gates at the Weir are closed. They do that to retain as much water in the loch as possible, so that they can pump it back up into their storage loch, rather than losing it down the river Ness. So in addition to the loch rising behind the weir, the additional water that should have maintained the height of the river through the sluices, is also diverted behind and consequently over the weir, as the height of the loch continues to rise, during the electricity production process. You can no doubt imagine the impact that there will be upon the surrounding environment and the wild/ bird life, as more of these pump storage systems come on line. My videos tend to run about 6 weeks later than they were filmed which probably explains why the catch returns are at odds with what you are seeing. A lot to take in there Brian but I hope that helps. After another 6 days straight, it’s off to Tesco for me, if only they did hair cuts….

@CameronChapman .Many thanks Cameron for that in depth info. on the water levels. That's interesting. Yes when I fished the garry way back in the eightys Tues was when they turned on the hydro. but it wasn't a lot of water and it didn't run long, about 12 hours.
@CameronChapmanКүн бұрын
The scale of the operations up here is mind boggling @@clarkson7777 and when they produce, it’s a total game changer on the river. I can only imagine how things will be when the next pump storage facility comes on line!

Great video as always, just love the underwater shots. So, the seal coming that far up is that a sign of maybe more fish running than we think (i’m trying to be optimistic)? Or is it a sign of poor feeding in the firth? That’s some effort it must go to to make it there.
@CameronChapman6 күн бұрын
@@highlandfishingdiary8818 Many thanks for your kind words, I’m delighted to read that you enjoy the underwater footage. There are definitely a lot of fish in the system, especially in the big Loch. The seal is a regular visitor that spends April/ May feeding in Loch Ness and its tributaries and the rest of the time pursuing pods of fish up the river, when it gets the opportunity, which is definitely what it was doing when I captured this footage. Only ever see one seal, never a group, so hopefully it’s just an intermittent opportunist.
