I realise these comments are a bit late and a bit long winded. BUT. Who ever assembled that suspension,clearly did not know what they are doing and are totally to blame for the failure.and now you are left with a less than desirable structural chassis integrity situation. And the only 2 ways to remedy it it. 1: Temp repair is new longer bolt with a washer next to the head, then pass it through the damaged chassis and place another washer on it so that you have washers either side of the damaged chassis,I would then add another washer then pass the shocking top mount over the bolt and then place another washer on the outside of the shockie and then put a spring washer or nyloc nut to hold everything tight. No2 Fix is to either weld up the damaged mounting locations and re drill them to original size or drill the damaged chassis locations out and go up a size in bolts and mount it as previously described. And No dropping Wright out will not effect the shocking as the are there to only control the rate of up and downwards movement.

Washers 100%. Dropping water not critical either way in regards to travel, but the suspension coils will perform better when at their designed load. The overiding consideration is adequate water is critical for safety/survival in remote areas so never ditch your water. The shock should have been removed because is isnt performing any function now and leaving it hanging just provides for a potential compounding issue that may ulimately impact another functioning componant. You made considered choices albiet possibly not the best, but most inportantly you didnt show panic which would could adversely impact the kids and that trumps anything else. The shock eyelet has torn out, if the bolt was still attached washer would play not part it that. 👍

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, ultimately everyone wipes there hands and very little good faith in the industry, they have your money if you were the first purchaser and if you are 2nd then the onus falls to you on purchase. Also service should have picked it up….change service agent….

Just found this video, sorry for your issues but, 1 never drop water. 2 That suspension design is not suitable for off road use , I'm talking about shock mounting system. 3 At the very minimum have the shock absorber mounts cut out and properly designed, that system is rubbish as are the shocks if there's no branding they are cheap Chinese and unfit for purpose.

Travelled GRR on three occasions towing our 4000kg caravan. Reduced tyre pressure to 18psi all round and never exceeded 50kph. Mostly around 30kph. Thankfully no damage, except rocks thrown up by others passing us doing at least 100kph.

Great video. I would advise you to report this to vehiclerecalls.gov.au. I had a damaged suspension on my caravan. After extensive lobbying including various politicians and government ministers 50 caravans have been recalled. This is a safety issue. Your caravan suspension was not put together properly. Have a look at Caravan recalls number REC-005844.

My opinion In relation to your driving technique, speed etc. you were doing the correct thing. Tyre pressure I personally would have dropped down to about 25psi, can go a lot lower but that track is not overly ruff so 25psi would have been adequate. Definitely would have removed shocky straight away. Would have kept water, for safety reasons and removing it would have made no difference to your issue. Shocky mounts, definitely should have a washer where you have noted. Overall the way they have mounted those shocks is disgusting, even with the washer correctly installed. The bolts are way undersized and I wonder if they are even high tensile. Personally I would move on from dealing with the manufacturer etc. Just take it to an engineering mob somewhere on your travels and get them to modify and beef up the mounts, do it once and do it right. Might cost $500-$1000 but otherwise it will be on the back of your mind all the time and ruin your trip. Been there done that, and the more you travel these roads unfortunately more things break Good luck and enjoy

The coil springs hold the weight not the shocks - could have left the water in - there’s only one shock per corner of the car for dampening, having 2 one the van is overkill - use a big bore foam filled shock.

@australianoverlanders4688
@australianoverlanders4688 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching it means a lot to us both. I am a bit scared to give any feedback at this stage. Before we left home we talked about wanting to buy a stone guard but ran out of time and money. So far we have not needed it and life has been easier without it. We did put cardboard over the back window on the Strzelecki track to avoid stones bouncing off the van and back onto the window. We are planning on doing the Gibb River road in 3 weeks and will be doing the same there plus lowering our speed. Time will tell if not having it will be a mistake. We have commented how little dust we have got in the van. Again we decided to try and go without it to save money as it just keeps adding up. On dirt dusty roads we covered the vent in the side door with cardboard. We have done Strzelecki, Oodnadatta track and William creek road with minimal dust inside. I hope that helps. Safe travels

Wow how exciting you will love it. Next Friday’s video we complete the second half of the Mereenie loop and stay at Finke mile 2 camp ground. It is a must stop. Drive towards the end and you come to a beautiful river with the cliffs in the foreground and the ground is like a beach or somewhat stony. You can then visit Ormiston gorge from there as a day trip. More room than staying at the Ormiston camp ground. One of our favourite camp spots. Planned to stay one night ended up staying three nights there. We may pass each other on the road somewhere if you are heading north.

We have the same suspension (brand and model) however the shocks are side by side not behind each as on yours. Our shocks are red not black. We need to replace our shocks when we get home as one on each side is starting to leak. Hope you guys are going ok.

We are still on the move and loving life on the road in our caravan. These things happen so we have fixed and moved on. I am still trying to get some help from the manufacturer or Marvel to replace or fix a few things due to the break. But not letting that affect our trip. Spoiler alert - Our car has decided to follow suit and breakdown. That video is Friday week but is happening as we speak. So far 10 days straight in one spot in the middle of nowhere. But our spirits are high as we are supported by great staff at the best outback pub with amazing meals (Devils Marble Hotel). Free camping out the front or paid out the back. Very safe. Still enjoying every day. Big shout out to the staff who are so friendly.
