"Keep on Growin' with Mike VanDuzee" avoids the issue by simply drilling the holes (2") along the top of the side of a 5 gallon bucket. He secures the seedlings in the holes with short segments of pool noodles.

I planted a black-eyed pea plant in a 20-liter plastic gas can. The plant is producing well but the can is running out of nutrient solution. I decided to add 200 ml of nutrient solution per day to see how long I can keep this plant producing. My thinking is that if I can keep the level from dropping further I may be able to extend this plant's life for many more weeks.

Keeping in mind that this boxjoy project is exclusively fill once, set&forget... I have no plans to refill the bucket, as that is beyond the scope of busy, distracted beginner gardeners. So I have avoided beans because I imagine they are too big and therefore thirsty for these 5 gallon buckets. But I thought the same about peas and were proven wrong. Let me know of any Micro Dwarf bean varieties, I'll run tests!

@@boxjoy6361 Well, it turns out that I have to add 250 ml a day to keep up with the nutrient loss. However, this plant is producing fantastically so I can't see allowing it to die from lack of nutrients. I planted peas to get peas. Now, I'm getting peas. If I have the time to pick them, I have the time to add a little nutrient.

i did a cucumber in a 55 gallon drum with this method! it did great *the name of the cucumber was "Diva" (it was recommended by the nursery owner) .. we just recently had to move it out of the green house the cucumber plant took over our little green house and so we had to remove it and take the barrells out .. we are now going to try sweet peas in this method .. the way we figure it "nothing ventured, nothing gained!" so why not .. right?!

The problem isn't the seal, its that numerous greens act as a funnel for the rain... no seal at the stem will impede rain funneled within the stem to enter the bucket.

Excellent video, thanks for posting. I had a few thoughts, if you don't mind: 1. This is my first rainy season with hydroponics and my vessels filled up with water. I'm looking for a way to build a cheap, fast, easy siphon as I have mounted down my vessels to prevent them from moving in the wind. I'll look around and let you know if I find anything. 2. Your video is great but it wasn't easy to find. You might consider adding additional key words like - rain, too much rain water, ....... Thanks!!

@@boxjoy6361 I don't know what type of containers you're using but possibly the easiest way is to drill small seep holes in the containers. When the solution/rain reach that level they drain out. If you send me a photo, I might be able to provide more guidance as siphons can be time consuming.

Why didn’t you just drill a small drain hole in the side of the bucket below the net cup so the rain water would drain out at a certain level and not drown the roots?
@boxjoy6361
@boxjoy6361 Жыл бұрын
two reasons: 1) if the water level is mostly empty, and it fills up, it will kill the plant. 2) it dilutes the nutrient mixture.

In 5 gallon buckets I use a kitchen cinch type trash bag. Cut the seam off the bottom of the bag and slip it up from the bottom or down from the top. The cinch ties can be pulled up and tied as the plant gets bigger and forms as a tent. Another benefit protects from suns heat
@boxjoy6361
@boxjoy6361 Жыл бұрын
I believe the cinch is at the stem somewhere, correct? these are white bags, no? So this wouldn't stop water drizzling within a stem of a lettuce plant... right down into the bucket.

Just found your channel, nice work! I think you could get around the lettuce issue by building a dedicated shelf or support structure so the buckets themselves can be slanted between 25-45º with respect to the vertical axis, in this sense any rain falling down would be redirected by gravity to the floor rather than accumulate in the plant despite it having more funneling leaves. I'm doing a few experiments of my own with Kratky at my channel, so hopefully we can trade ideas with each other as we go along!

I have little problem eliminating water that was on the lid from entering the bucket. The problem lies in that little water ever hits the lid, its all funneled into the stem from the lettuce leaves... and down into the bucket.

Hello, thanks for sharing. Question 🙋 is that only water in the buckets or was it a hydroponic mix? The tomatoe plant in the box with the white covering, how would it get pollinated? I was had a tomato plant I threw a mesh net over because something was eating my cherry tomatoes. Once I put the net over it, it stopped bearing fruit. I figured later it was because it wasn’t getting pollinated by the bees. Thanks for any feedback.
@boxjoy6361
@boxjoy6361 Жыл бұрын
Nutrients are in the bucket with water. Tomatoes are self pollenating but they do need to get jostled to get pollenated. Perhaps the cover inhibited its own pollen from working around the plant.

The real problem is that many greens act as a funnel, bypassing any effort to create a seal at the netcup. The water just rolls in within the stem. Lots of water.... its surprising.

Good effort but water will still get in. All the water that hits the plants leaves will run down the branches and stem right into the net cup. Really for inside a greenhouse. Keeping it uncovered is not gonna work.

If I was going that route, I'd look into 12-15 gallon trash cans. They seem about right for refilling. And consider choosing smaller patio tomato varieties, because even they will grow to quite a large size in Kratky.

I get food grade buckets used on craigslist, left over from restaurants. they are about 3-4 dollars a piece with lid on the west coast of america. Free if you ask around. A Home Depot bucket might be appealing and be made of a plastic you like, but its not just the plastic that makes something food grade. It's also how it is manufactured. There are releasing agents that can be toxic, and are likely used in a non-food grade bucket like a home depot orange pail.
