i did a cucumber in a 55 gallon drum with this method! it did great *the name of the cucumber was "Diva" (it was recommended by the nursery owner) .. we just recently had to move it out of the green house the cucumber plant took over our little green house and so we had to remove it and take the barrells out .. we are now going to try sweet peas in this method .. the way we figure it "nothing ventured, nothing gained!" so why not .. right?!

I love it! I personally love cucumbers and really crave to get them to have a full life cycle within 5 gallons, but at my best I did them in 25 gallons.

I planted a black-eyed pea plant in a 20-liter plastic gas can. The plant is producing well but the can is running out of nutrient solution. I decided to add 200 ml of nutrient solution per day to see how long I can keep this plant producing. My thinking is that if I can keep the level from dropping further I may be able to extend this plant's life for many more weeks.

Keeping in mind that this boxjoy project is exclusively fill once, set&forget... I have no plans to refill the bucket, as that is beyond the scope of busy, distracted beginner gardeners. So I have avoided beans because I imagine they are too big and therefore thirsty for these 5 gallon buckets. But I thought the same about peas and were proven wrong. Let me know of any Micro Dwarf bean varieties, I'll run tests!

@@boxjoy6361 Well, it turns out that I have to add 250 ml a day to keep up with the nutrient loss. However, this plant is producing fantastically so I can't see allowing it to die from lack of nutrients. I planted peas to get peas. Now, I'm getting peas. If I have the time to pick them, I have the time to add a little nutrient.

Love the videos ! What plastic you use for the buckets and why ?

I get food grade buckets used on craigslist, left over from restaurants. they are about 3-4 dollars a piece with lid on the west coast of america. Free if you ask around. A Home Depot bucket might be appealing and be made of a plastic you like, but its not just the plastic that makes something food grade. It's also how it is manufactured. There are releasing agents that can be toxic, and are likely used in a non-food grade bucket like a home depot orange pail.
