The arts are not the pretty but irrelevant bits around the border of reality. They are the highways into the center of a reality which cannot be glimpsed, let alone grasped, any other way. - N T Wright Nice painting BTW.

Same here, I always do it, it happens automatically. I didn't realise at first though, but then I realised it was subconscious.

I still praise the day i found your channel here! For the paintings, the talks and the subject and challenges...to openly talk about the use of animals for brushes and glue( poor rabbits😢) but that's probably the only thing they had back in the day, it's a great thing people get the awareness how these animals suffer for our luxerly and advantage...( maybe we should try it with human hair eqsy to cut, painless, etc...why didnt they tryed that?)...it's a very sad thing...and IF we have such products it's our task to make something superbeautyful with and sell it and donate the profit to protect these animals and stop this terror.❤😢 Stunning work Nicolas!❤❤❤

I love Kouta Sasai’s paintings and drawings! Thank you for the talk. Haven’t tuned in in a long time to Painted Lives. I’m getting back to painting after 2 year block. I too love Soutine & Auerbach !

It is weird to talk about Caravaggio and not use his technique in a video

A while ago I hurt my left scapula from a combination of training without a proper warm-up, and drawing 6-8 hours a day for several days with terrible posture. I spent about 3 months without being able to draw for 30 minutes straight without my back starting to hurt, and I had the idea, just like in this video, to start drawing with my non-dominant hand. It was incredible that it didn't matter how much knowledge I had regarding the fundamentals of drawing. There is a part that has to do with repetition day after day, in which small muscles that run from the shoulder to the wrist get used to making precise movements until they become second nature. It is wonderful. Nowadays I maintain the habit of drawing traditionally with my non-dominant hand, or even with both hands, while digital, which is where I do my college work, is still done by my dominant hand.

Oh Nicolas...you woke someting up man...i had a very troubled relation with my father, i can't even call him a dad...he was a drunk agressive man. I still could'nt really grieve about him...he died 6 years or so ago and i did'nt went to his funeral...in the last years i could see the roots of his behaviour and i thought about painting him in way i could say good bye and forgive him because now i 'understand' who he really was...a very creative man who had a very broken childhood and found salvation in alcohol...daaaaaaamn this shook me up.I am scared of painting him but if feel the urge to go through the mud and darkness.❤

Had to watch and listen to this one twice today. So many important ideas. I had missed this video a few months ago and have been wondering if something had happened with your arm. It’s inspiring to hear you talk about how you handled it. Beautiful. And thank you for sharing so much about the experience and what goes on in your brain. I always wondered how you could carry on conversations and paint like you do. 😊 Congratulations again to you and Dani. And a big scratch behind the ears for chili pepper.

I think many finnish painters of that era you are talking had both european and russian influences melted on their work. For example Edelfelt and Akseli Gallen-Kallela.

"Painting goes beyond the object that is created" Absolutely love this video, this gets me excited to paint! Thank you for putting your thoughts out there. Hearing from a master artist such as yourself is really helpful. I've always been afraid of messing up my wrist more. I use my hands a lot and need them to be healthy in order to live my life. I've been on my own hand-pain journey over the last 10 years. It's still very mild but it does flare up from time to time. I think it originated from a bike crash that didn't heal right. I started drawing 4-5 years ago and at the time my dominant hand was not able to do it, so I would do it with my non-dominant a lot. Eventually I figured out ways to get my dominant wrist better and healthier, at least with drawing, but painting can cause it to become flared up. Anyway, thank you Nicolas!
