There's a video on how goretex works exactly by a man who explaind why he prefers traditional raingear instead of modern ones (Goretex) In short, Goretex' breathability only works when the fabric is completely dry, when wind can still pass through the microscopic gaps in the fabric As soon as the fabric interacts with water or sweat the fabric's gaps get sealed by the water's surface tension and it becomes both water- and windproof With this the marketed breathability is only true when the fabric is completely dry

Unless you're a pro (and thus contractually obliged), wearing a helmet is a personal choice. Whatever. Just be safe. BUT... One thing that really annoys me is to see helmets that aren't fitted correctly. Kids and adults, you see lots of people wearing them bobbling about on the back of their heads like Easter bonnets. Here's the thing: a loose helmet may actually be more dangerous than no helmet at all, because it encourages an attitude of complacency in the rider whilst offering NO protection in many typical crash scenarios. For a guy working on a construction site, a loose helmet is fine because its purpose is to protect an almost stationary wearer from moving objects. Dropped hammers, flying chunks of brick, scaffolding brackets falling from a great height, will all be deflected. The helmet doesn't even need a chinstrap to be effective. On a bike, though, things are different. If the helmet isn't [very] firmly attached to your head, it will come off in a crash. Not a problem at 5 mph, perhaps, where your head receives one 'crack' on the kerb and comes to a rest, but utterly useless at normal riding speeds, where a typical fall will involve an initial impact, followed by 20 yards of tumbling, skidding, bouncing and rolling. A loose helmet is also no help if you're hit by a moving vehicle. Yes, the first crunch of head on windscreen may be partially absorbed, but the helmet will then fly off and you'll be dropping back onto the tarmac at considerable speed and from a scary height. The helmet can't help you if it's on the other side of the road. A rider with no helmet will be more likely to fall somewhat more 'safely' than a rider trusting that his helmet will protect him. Meaning what, you ask? Meaning that a helmetless rider feels far more vulnerable and will freely use both hands and both arms to wrap and protect their head in an accident. The precious bike won't get a second thought. On the other hand, a helmet-wearer will be more likely to cling to the bike, trying to control the crash and save the day whilst trusting that the helmet will take care of his noggin. The denial that the crash is happening and that everything's out of control is stronger in a [partially] protected rider. The helmet gives the rider 'permission' to cling to the idea that the situation can be saved. Of course, a crash happens incredibly quickly - far too fast for thought - but it's the reflex response that matters. With no helmet, you know you're toast, your bike's a complete loss, so you simply try to save yourself and fall safely. With a helmet, you're more likely to refuse to accept defeat and will try to rescue the situation. Possibly. I can't prove any of that; I'm not a doctor or a psychologist, and I have no data other than my own cycling experience [two moderate crashes in 30 years: once when a front wheel collapsed at 25+mph; once when a water-filled pothole ate my front wheel and sent me flying]. No helmet, no injuries, just a few bruises. But I do know that a loose helmet is a positive danger. So how tight does a helmet have to be to be effective? Unfortunately, the answer is 'uncomfortably tight', because the forces generated by a collision are greater and more violent than most people can imagine. Tugging at the helmet or shaking your head as hard as you can and thinking, "That'll do" because it stays put may not be enough. You can't simulate a crash impact just by shaking your head vigorously. The helmet's harness/strap needs to be tight to the point of being annoying if it's to be truly effective. Rubbish, you say? Well, it's your choice. But that's why a loose or 'comfortable' helmet could be more dangerous than no helmet at all. It's a state of mind. If all cyclists wore heavy, full-face motorbike helmets, head injuries would be relatively rare, but cycling's far too physical an activity to wear such restrictive headgear. Please, peeps: if you're a helmet wearer, don't kid yourself that it'll help save you (or your son or daughter) unless it's fitted firmly enough to do its job. Wearing no helmet is a semi-sensible choice if you also ride extremely defensively. By that I mean constantly giving way to other traffic and getting off your bike to use pedestrian crossings to navigate busy junctions. I ride in the north of England - West Yorkshire, where bike-crushing Jeremy Clarkson comes from - and many drivers here really HATE cyclists. There are no bike lanes or paths. I don't wear a helmet, but I always signal, use my mirrors, and obey the rules of the road. I rely on eye-contact, a ready smile, grudge-free yielding, and plenty of 'thank you' acknowledgement waves at drivers to avoid antagonism and collisions. I've tried numerous bike helmets (and one open-face motorbike helmet) over the years, and have always felt LESS vulnerable without one. Yep. Weird, huh? I like to be able to breathe freely, and I can't do that with a helmet that's fitted correctly. If it's loose enough to be comfy, it's no use to me in a crisis. Without a helmet I've just got my bum as a rear crumple zone and a comedy-sized NN bosom for airbag frontal protection. So far, so good...

So super-short and super-tall is the dogs bollocks? Based on how many people one can put on 'em and end up with something that kinda/sorta works? I have to admit modern gravel bike sizing makes zero sense to me and trying to figure out the geo/spec sheets is as frustrating as getting advice from the makers or so-called experts, who one would think might actually know what they're talking about? I'm convinced now the ONLY way is to visit shops that actually have the bike you want in various sizes so you can try 'em on for-size. The rest is just a "scientific-wild-assed-guess" as they say!

Can someone explain as I do not get it. Cannondale for example has almost similar reach and stack as Pinarelli. Cannondale (Sm model): Reach 377, Stack 561. Pinarelli: 374, 578. And Canyon S model, that is well praised here has reach almost 392 reach, Stack 610. Can someone explain why Cannondale is less ok then Pinarelli? I understand the Trek numbers as reach is really huge, but other number I don't get it..

If they're directional, you want to mount the front as stated on the side wall but for the rear the direction on the side wall gives more grip when braking, but if you want more grip for accelerating and climbing you can mount it backwards. Tyre pressure is just as important, if not more so than tread pattern.

I find it kinda weird the Checkpoint is dismissed because of the geometery specs, and the downtube stone guard. The Checkpoint has an incredibly smooth and controlled ride, yet very responsive when needed. For other than racing purposes how could anyone want a better quality ride than the Checkpoint? If a "bikefitter" rode a Checkpoint as opposed to just looking at specs, THAT is the reaction/feedback/review I would find actual value from. And that under downtube stone guard...how is that even a negative?? The Checkpoint is a superb ride-quality bike for both gravel trails and some road use, and anyone who has ridden one knows this.

Thanks Francis and James for the list, now and then I love to watch how in Cade media the subjective opinion (and they made it clear, always about it) and their perspective are take it by the comments, to be offended and be salty AF, is a video to broad your view and benchmark with you own experience, sheeeeesh but 2024 and people still go into the internet to be offended and be butthurt.
