This is a far cry from my 1992 version of this design. Mine lasted 30 years and the hose split after 24 years. I tapes the hose and it went 6 more years. Sears cheaped out in this design. I think the Titan version was much better quality. Say what you want, no vacuum is worth 1200 bucks. The basic technology is 85 years old. They're all molded plastic. Walmart sold those sanitary/eureka/ Hoover convertible clones, in plastic for 69bucks. Those Panasonic canisters were 299 bucks. I have a Riccar canister purchased on close out. It was 400 bucks. It is mush handier than the Lenore ever was. I love the expandable wand and the body is half the size of the Kenmore. But I can't see myself spending 800-1200 for vacuum

We were an all Dyson family, but as they tend to be glitchy and more difficult to repair than other brands, we are replacing with Sharks.

Thanks for showing the teardown, turns out my vacuum has the same problem. Did some more troubleshooting and my power cord is only broken at the actual plug end (probably from repeated yanking out of outlets). The power cord connects to the winding mechanism via two removable contacts, so if that’s the broken part you can replace only the cord itself and save a bunch of money by not buying the whole mechanism. Thanks again for publishing this

Hi Matt, I love your excitement about the 8850! I have had mine for over 20 years (bought used) and love it! However, she is a bugger to put a new belt on!! I was so excited to watch your video (yes, I am a 8850 geek as well!) and followed most of your instructions step by step except for getting into the motor (I wasn’t comfortable) and waited with excitement to see how YOU replace the belt and roller BUTTTT that portion was in fast motion! :(. I tried so hard to freeze the frames but still couldn’t grasp how you appeared to do it so easily!! Do you have a separate video showing how to do this!? It would greatly help to end the wrestling matches I have with this old girl!

Just got my Bissell running after it “broke” two years ago. It was that same clog in this video. It works like it did the day I bought it. Now i can take my shop vac back to the garage. 👍🏽😁

What are your thoughts on the Riccar Canister Vacuum? It has both the HEPA and charcoal filtration. Is it as good or better than the Miele or Sebo Canister Vacuums? I can’t decide and it’s driving me crazy. Great video and thanks for all your wisdom.

Thank you so much for this video. I ran over dog poop with my vacuum and it got above the roller on the plastic. This video saved me from having to buy a new one. I appreciate the time you took to make this.

Hello, great video, exceptionally thorough. I have this vacuum and it's been GREAT, just one question the red bag full indicator on the side won't turn off. You mention it at about 26:22. I've had professional cleanings on this vacuum done, changed the bag, all filters and even used dried rice to help clean any sensors, done a thermal reset too. Please tell me how to make the red light turn off? Thank you!

Love your videos and how well you explain your topics. I bought a second fine dirt filter cartridge for mine, so when it's time to clean it, I just swap it out and then do a deep clean on filter and let it dry properly. Next time it's time to clean it again, then swap them back. I just keep alternating them, and never have to worry about being without my vacuum because the filter is wet and having to wait for it to dry, second cartridge wasn't that expensive, and I was able to order it directly from Miele-USA.

Thanks for the explicit instructions. Having the same brush roller problem, the culprit was that the white nylon motor gear had worn so that it was not gripping the motor axle. A drop of super glue fixed it.

For people that really care about air quality, they need an externally exhausted central vacuum. Forget 99% filtration, how about 100%? You can also get a cyclonic model with zero ongoing expenses. No bags, no filters.

Thank you so much for this video. I recently found this model Miele on eBay for a really good price, so I bought it. It was canister only and didn't include the hose, attachments, or the wands and power nozzle. When the machine arrived, I was really surprised how clean it was inside and out. I did put a HEPA filter in it, and I use the blue collar GN bags in it. All genuine Miele, of course. I have since fount the hose for it and bought brnd new canister tools for it, as well as a power nozzle. Of the three Mieles I own this is absolutely my favorite. I look forward to using it for many years to come.

I don't understand why Miele didn't use a dual cyclone separator. The patents on that expired decades ago, and I'm sure that Miele could have put their own twist on the design to improve it.

Nice video. These are great vacs, Dysons best series as far as im concerned. Quick tip. I pull the entire canister out intact, and soak the whole thing in a mild citric acid and cool water solution overnight in a 5 gallon bucket. Rinse the next morning and air dry. Been working like a champ in a DC33 for years.

Thanks for the vid. I have this same problem on a DC50. When I press the switch I’m getting 120v+ DC (I think 160v) out of the motor brush area. I actually left the brushes in by accident and there was a huge spark. So definitely power coming through. I sanded the brush contact points. But when I put the motor back together, the white plastic piece with brushes and the can, I don’t get any voltage where the brushes are. I read that there’s some safety mechanism to prevent current overdraw in case the motor is shot, maybe the breaker that you show here, which would explain no voltage when the motor is assembled. The vac is over 10 years old and maybe insulation on the windings of the motor gave out. Sadly the motor is impossible to find on its own and I have to buy an assembly off eBay for $50. Hoping that works, I’ll update my comment ✌️

So this video was extremely helpful and extremely unhelpful at the same time. Cause what you’re saying is, I need a vacuum to clean my vacuum, noted. But also, what are the instructions for someone that has not cleaned this thing in three years? What can get wet? What can get really wet? And what do I throw away and replace?
