My chuck is not coming off and my Sears Craftsman is cleaner than the one in this video. I tried penetrating oil and I'm using a ball joint fork tool. My chuck says 3/8 with a 33 Taper. I looked for a set nut in the chuck but there isn't one. I don't have the key for it so I wanted to change to a keyless chuck but damb it, it's not coming off. HELP!

How hard should I hit it? I'm scared to destroy the mechanism inside. I thought I hit it plenty hard but when I used it the chuck fell off
@johncrepezzi6 ай бұрын
If you retract the jaws all the way and give it a pretty good hit it should stay on. Slightly harder than you would think, and try to make sure the taper is clean first.
@johnsuarez14046 ай бұрын
@@johncrepezzi yeah I crossed my fingers and beat the crap out of it with the plastic side of my hammer. Not too hard, but firm hits. My logic was that if you keep hitting something, you can nudge it further and further without hitting it harder. No problems since.

After 2 years; the new chuck fell off when using a 2 1/2 in hole saw. Back on with rubber mallet and it fell off again. Thinking of using some lock tight ??
@b-west2 жыл бұрын
Great explanation. Another way to get a stubborn chuck off, assuming it still works, is to clamp a nut tightly in the chuck and then thread a bolt into it to push on the taper from below, like a gear puller

Thats what I need to do right now, You did it exactly like the directions said, they want me to clean the rod and chuck was acetone to remove all oil? I guess its so the tapered faces seat with no debris or oil that would cause friction

*Bought as a gift for my son and his second grade son to use on a Pinewood Derby car. Wanted something relatively safe and able to be packed away when not in use. Worked well. **MyBest.Tools** Easy to use and set up. Case provides good storage.*

Is another way to do this, is to replace the chuck and then press it against a piece of wood? I am putting together the same 5 speed drill press that you have. I got it from Harbor Freight and the chuck wobbles. I've only used it once.

great job!! Since you helped me with my drill chick problem allow me to help you! Try not to have the camera face a window or light source as it makes the shot more of a silhouette and makes it harder to see the details of what you are showing. Not a hater or a troll I swear. Thanks for the video. I was just using my Craftsman 8 inch. When the chuck came off. Now I know for sure how to put it back on. It was a Christmas gift, from my mother. In 1988.

@@seejohnmakeMine don't have the side hole to be able to put a wedge inside and have it pop off so I'm figuring it might be the type you bang out till it drops off, I'm going to use a ball joint fork to slip it off.

Thank you very much. I assembled the whole thing but the directions said to gently insert the Chuck. This caused it to fly off when powered on. However after this video I went back and slide the table up some, added my board and then pressed down a little harder and the tapered end locked itself into place. So thank you for instilliny confidence in getting my chuck installed. I was able to finish all my hole drilling this evening and ready for more success tomorrow.

Thanks, that's helpful, I'm a first-time drill press buyer and I thought this was how it was done but it's good to have it confirmed. Just a safety suggestion (my dad was hyper about safety), I'd recommend taking out the yellow safety insert on the power switch or unplugging it prior to working with the moving components of a power tool (just a suggestion, thanks for the video).
