They (Anthony Geary/Genie Francis) had to be at the very least great friends for the entirely of Tony's time on General Hospital! Tony just hugs her with to much caring and sweetness for them not to be!

It’s interesting to finally see these. I started watching GH in 2008, falling in love with JaSam, I’d go back to watch JaSam on KZfaq since 2004. So I definitely understand being part of a fictional romance fandom. But when I told my mom I was watching GH, she told me she used to watch (before I was born) but this storyline actually made her stop watching. Even at the time she could not understand how the writers and fandom could root for a Luke and Laura romance after the rape. Maybe she understood things ahead of her time. But I’m glad my mom is the way she is and raised me the way she did. It’s crazy how many things that I grew up with that NEVER sat right with me (especially when it comes to rape - like putting rape into comedy or romance) that nowadays people are FINALLY admitting “it didn’t age well.” I understand the history and acceptance of it. I’m just so glad we’ve moved to a better understanding of this terrible act.

Their break up was so honest and so real. It was heart breaking because they had grown apart but the love and mutual admiration was still there and always would be they're Luke and Laura 💔😢

First it was rape, then later on Laura tells Luke it was making love, then years late Luke says it was rape (when telling his kids) just which is it? However, Laura did yell out no Luke no. No means no so in my opinion she was not a willing participant even though she claims later it was making love. Just exactly what was it Laura? Besides, she lies for him too lies about where it happened, how, & who did it.

I use to think that it was Scotty who had the Problem. And he was Controlling. But it was Laura who had the Issues&Problem!!! It Started with David Hamilton. And then Luke!!! Scotty tried everything he could to Actually Help Laura! He agreed to go to counseling and was patient. Tried to talk to her. She was Able to talk to her Rapists about all her problems!!! Of Course Scotty didn’t want her to work @the Disco After everything that happened there. And I thought he was coming between her&luke. But in fact it was Luke who caused all the trouble. I actually feel bad for Scotty now!!! He was a good husband. I felt bad for laura too. I never understood why she would continue to hang out with Luke and work for him after everything he did too her? It was Confusing till this day too say the least.

I Always Felt Bad For Laura

I vaguely remember watching this episode when it first aired. The year was 1979. Genie was 17 years old when she did this storyline. What I do remember was the way Jessie helped Laura. That was something that stuck with me through the years. I was a young teenager at the time. I think this is the reason that I didn’t realize what an incredible job Genie did for this particular episode. Watching it now, close to being 59 years old, it’s like seeing it for the first time. I am so impressed by her acting, especially for this storyline, for being only 17 years old. Then I remembered something about the first (and only) time Miss Francis won an Emmy - 2007. So I had to research the history of the Emmy’s and Genie Francis. I am so disappointed about her being, pretty much, ignored for TOO MANY YEARS. She didn’t win an Emmy until 2007 - the only time she’s won. She’s only been nominated 5 times, in all the years she played Laura!!! However the thing that makes me wonder - if the “Powers That Be” actually watched the show at all - is that Genie wasn’t even nominated for this storyline 😠 (Her first nomination wasn’t until 1997). It took 10 more years until she actually won the award. This is disgusting. She was still a young/new/actress when she played this storyline - and as I said, only 17 years old. I’ve watched Genie play Laura since 1978 (on & off). I cannot believe that the Emmy people ignored her for so many years. It must have been heartbreaking for her to not even be nominated for so long, and watch Tony Geary win and win and win - EVERY TIME HE DESERVED IT. Not only should she have been nominated for her acting skills in this story, she should have won!!

Like she was bitten by a vampire. There's no escaping it. This is deep, archetypal stuff. It was like putting a garden hose into the vein of every red blooded female on earth. We were as hooked as she was. What genius. Incredible performances!

I am posting the following on several of these episodes. We have younger people watching who simply do not understand the context of this entire story and how it ended like it did (and some older folk, even now). The following is my opinion, but 30 million people might have agreed in 1981... 1) Females evolved being attacked, raped, taken hostage, etc., by males since time immemorial. Falling in love with your rapist - if he forced you to stay with him - is a gift. It meant survival. And we absolutely can do it. We have names like Stockholm Syndrome to identify it in modern terms, but it's in our DNA. Think Elizabeth Smart if you need help with it. This in no way means it's ok. It's not. Today we are citizens with rights. It was always wrong, but today it means a long prison sentence when you get caught (and you will, DNA tests are cheap and easy) so I don't recommend anyone try it thinking they want to play caveman. 2) In the 1970's "bodice-ripper" historical romances were all the rage, just like this show became. 3) WE didn't see the attack and so we are forced to imagine what happened. Luke did not beat her. It was not violent beyond him forcing himself on her. It would later be called what we know today to be date rape. On this issue, this show was ahead of its time. 4) This is fiction. It's important to remember that. But the issue is real. 5) Luke blacked out. He believed himself dead and was drunk as a skunk. These are not excuses, they are explanations for how he could lose his mind temporarily. Today experts know about temporary psychosis, that is what happened to him. 6) As a male organism, Luke, believing he was about to die, would ABSOLUTELY be moved to try to reproduce. This is a quintessential evolutionary drive. Soldiers before going off to war almost always leave pregnant wives back home for the same reason. 7) I don't know if Gloria Monty considered this at this level, but it's what happens in these scenarios. Her bravery in taking a scenario out of best-selling novels and putting it on daytime television cannot be overstated. It was shocking. But we American girls and women were ALREADY accepting of these types of "love stories" through our paperback choices. We instinctively understood the dynamics involved. Particularly since it was FICTION. 8) Luke was about to be killed and so was Geary and the show in its entirety. But the viewers - we American women - LOVED THEM together so much that WE forced Monty and her staff to rewrite the story and KEEP THEM TOGETHER. If you want someone to blame, blame US. Their chemistry, and Tony's incredible charisma, saved the show and broke records. 9) You can be mad at it, but evolution is not political. It gives not one shit about what's PC and what isn't. It's violent. It's ugly. And it's all about reproduction. There was no "dating" with wine and roses in the Paleolithic savannah. And we are absolutely from that. It's why men so easily kill each other to this day. Deal with it. Then be grateful men evolved to allow us rights, because they can take them away at any time. 10) Luke Spencer is an incredibly complex and enigmatic character as played by Anthony Geary. He is irresistible! If anyone has not watched the slow burn of their relationship from beginning to end, do not comment. Watch it all first. Then comment. I dare you not to fall in love with him too, along with 30 million other viewers. 11) and lastly; This is an archetypal story. It's the same one as Phantom of the Opera, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and countless others out there. It is THAT POWERFUL. And if you're not mad at those fictional stories, why be mad at this? I wish you all peace and great love in your lives! May you find a love like the one Luke had for Laura! L&L forever!
