The Lotus Carlton and the Escort Cosworth were both produced in the middle of a recession and both infamous in their ability to provide crazy speed to the masses. Thanks for the video and including Sabine. I’ve been seeing her and talking to her since I was going there since 2000. She was always friendly and was even in the same pitbox when we were racing VLN some time ago. She will be misssed. Yet, on another more ‘funny’ level, I was there when this Mercedes E-class Estate lost it’s real wheel. We did a few laps the same day, 27 April 2023, and we spent some time watching cars around the track.

That car was stolen by a drug fuelled thug called Andy Slamen and his mates. Slamen got crippled in the '90s when he drove a recovery truck high on heroin into the back of a tipper truck going south bound on the M5 between Portishead and Clevedon and he's still living in Pill just outside of Bristol. I remember him telling me how they stole it with a stolen Cossie. They also stole a Cossie out of a main dealer's workshop in Bristol and used it for various "things". Cavalier Turbos and Escort RS Turbos were all fair game to them. Karma got him good in the end. I hear he's had a stroke and open heart surgery in the past few years and is a shadow of his former self but still as fat as a house.

I had a 1993 Vauxhall Carlton. The 2.5l v6 automatic. Not the Lotus but the pedigree was in the dna. It was a monster. Completely unassuming in white and it did 0-60 in sub 8 seconds. I loved it.

wow that takes me back. i recall a friend telling me who had a carlton, that lotus had toyed with a calibre and the top speed of that was going to be 206mph - however the aero of the calibre meant the front went rather light and was not really a nice car to drive so fast. so the idea was scrubbed.
