So I'm the guy that started the Pelican Parts Mulholland thread. I want to thank you for this video. It's really hard to explain what an impact the thread, Mulholland Dr, and Banning have had on my life and my car builds. Chris is an extremely nice and interesting guy, and it's been an honor to call him a friend for so many years now. And yes, I've ridden in "The RSR" a few times. It's a beast.

Street racing on Mulholland mostly ended in the 80's after they started paving in the view spots and banning parking at night. In the early 80's my friends and I raced our RD350's and 400's up there as well as our cars. A lot of friends had Datsun 510's and Rotary Mazda trucks or Capri's. There was a spot known as "Grandstands" between Coldwater and Laurel Canyon where I did witness a friend die after he struck a truck that was pulling out of the parking area. People from Hollywood mostly went up their in lower budget cars and the people from The Valley usually had the nicer cars. It was actually better to race at night because you could see headlights coming around the corners and knew when you could or couldn't use the entire road. I'm sure the residents up there hated us back then. Now there are tons more potholes than turns so all you want to do now is cruise and not go too fast. P.S. I wonder if Chuck they mention here is the same Chuck that I raced a few times. He had a green early '70's Javelin and I had a white '68 Caprice with wide wheels but, otherwise stock.

I used to go up there with my Capri around 1978. Also for those not familiar with the area, this video might be a little confusing. You see there is a Mulholland Drive and a Mulholland Highway. Both are fun roads, but the main focus of events talked about in this video were on Mulholland DRIVE. And more specifically between Beverly Glen and Laurel Canyon.

I first learned about the Mulholland racing scene through stories my dad would tell of his trips to Mulholland Drive. Back in the mid 80’s He would make the drive from San Francisco to LA in his ‘79 Firebird Formula to race, getting inspired by the King of the Mountain movie. The story I remember the most was of him forming a sort of rivalry with a guy in a 356 speedster (very similar to the opening race of King Of The Mountain). The two of them raced a total of 3 times with the speedster winning each time. My dad doesn’t remember much else from that time, or specifics of the speedster, other than the owner being a really nice and chill guy. Since he got into the scene a bit later on after it’s Heyday, and also because he wasn’t an LA local, he unfortunately wasn’t able to witness either Chris or Charlie. But still, his stories inspired me to learn more about the story of Mulholland. Thank you for telling its story!

Absolutely love these kinds of Folk Legends. Every area of the world with car communities has local “legends” and “ghost cars” which come out on occasion to dominate and then disappear. Great video!

the racing scene up there is very much still alive this doesn't even scratch the surface of how much racing there actually was and is ,a lot of veterans still live in the area and now thier kids race it keeping it alive if run into one of them its a hell of a thing to witness and experiance

We went this past weekend to see Chris’ 911 at the Petersen museum! It was so worth it!

Driving these roads has always been one of my favorite things to do in life. Theres nothing like a twisty road that follows the natural terrain. I find it both calming and exciting. I once built a 93 EG Civic hatchback to be the "ultimate backroad" machine - but ended up making it a little too extreme and was very difficult to drive on the street. That car only wanted to go fast. But it was a learning experience and I really enjoyed building or upgrading every aspect of a car. So it was all worth it.

These guys lived a fantastic life - dangerous, wild, but it had to be fun.

I've driven Mullhulland a few times many years ago. I also really liked King of the Mountain but had no idea it was based on real people. Thanks for sharing!

What a fantastic historical documentary! I love to have a spirited drive on Mulholland, once I was going at a pretty good clip and saw in my rear view an M2 going at twice my speed coming up fast, and fully drifting every corner. Absolute monster driver. I pulled over to let him pass and as he hit the next turn in front of me he was completely sideways, rear tires in the dirt. And I'm no slouch, but not trying to die lol.

I am born and raised in Arizona, my father grew up in LA and would tell me stories about Mulholland Dr. Every time I go to LA, I make it a point to take a spin through Mulholland Dr. It definitely begs you to start hitting the corners, but I just cruise it and think about all the racing that has gone on there, and think about my father rippen through there on his motorcycle. Great video.

Mulholland Drive is always a blast to drive in. Nothing more surreal in SoCal whether it being night or day, it’s always something special!

There is a strange 911 I saw for sale recently with a chopped roof that I found very odd. I realize now it must have been inspired by the Mulholland RSR. It was in pretty rough shape, glad to see the original is still kicking. Awesome content as always.

I stumbled across King of the mountain the other day on KZfaq and watched it. Not great but the car culture it captured was pretty cool. Now learning how it came to be makes it worth watching. Awesome stuff in this video!

My extensively modified Datsun 350Z (Scarab) - powered by a Traco 355 cu in 488 HP LT-1 can be seen at :30 sec. At that 'particular' point in time the car was virtually unbeatable on the hill. Glass fenders, hood, doors, decklid, weighing 2020 dry 2105 lbs full of fuel with Nismo calipers, coilovers, and Caldwell's on Minilites. Do the math. Power/Weight. Never a 1/4 mile car yet it consistently clicked off 11:44 @ 138 at Bakersfield. There was more than a modicum of notoriety. As per Gary Hendrickson: "they (the fast regulars) wont run you. Huge narcissistic ego's govern them. They'll wait until nobody is around to bear witness and then.. maybe." R.I.P Gary Hoped to engage with Chris but it never came to pass. The ONLY quick (relative term) guys who DID pull up behine me were 'Doc' Rosner in his 951, Carlos (?) (huge winged electromotive Z-car which was pretty much a track car illegally on the street), David (?) Bryant 2nd Gen Z28, David B. in his blue 911E or S (?) targa and Bobby Carradine in his Guldstrand vette. Uphill from Coldwater - by the time we'd get to Bowmont, the lead was simply insurmountable. We had a few areas like this in San Antonio TX. But unfortunately urban sprawl over the last twenty years domesticated these roads. I had an 88 RX7 and there were a few good races I had with other sportsman like drivers. Miss those days.

Great video. One of the first things I did after getting my driver's license in 1980 was go to Mulholland drive every weekend to watch the racing. Epic.

I have Chris' book; owning a modified 930 and now a 911T w a 3.8 stuffed in the back I completely understand all of it.

Used to drive that stretch almost every day. Thousand Oaks Suzuki couldn't figure out why I ground off the exhaust shields on my GS so quickly... LOL.

My school is on this road. Its crazy to know the history behind the road.

And proper Mulholland racing like that still lives on today.

You can still run your headlights if you install a switch to cut off all rear lights. That's how we did it back in Arkansas growing up. When you get on a dirt or gravel road they ain't got a chance lol

Mulholland is one of my favorite places to drive. I love going in the morning with the POC/PCLA and hearing the screaming Porsches in the hills. To this day we don’t let the tradition die.

*Of Note: There are many canyon roads, not just Mulholland Dr., from the Getty to Pt.Mugu, from Thousand Oaks to Malibu. If you want to have fun, try ALL the canyons. (I terrorized them all from 1978 to 1985). Now I haunt all of San Diego County, from Borrego to La Jolla... Bwaaaahahahahaha!

i've seen the rsr recently at the Petersen automotive museum, I will just say, what a beauty, considering the fact that Mr Banning had done major rework that influenced the chassis rigidity and overall car handling just for canyon racing, that is something people can not replicate today. Also learning German part is funny, because I know people who learned Japanese just so they can modify their NSX

In the mid 70s, I used to run Mulholland Drive with my slammed small block 65 Chevy Nova. If you parked in “the pit” you could watch much of the road between Laurel and Coldwater Cyn. At that time, Charlie was a well known figure. We had a club known as the Cladstaien Racing Association. As I got older, we moved from the Drive to Mulholland Highway, which ran from the Valley to PCH. Start at the Rock Store & Pit stop at Neptune’s Net on PCH. Rinse and repeat. Only do motorcycles now.

That Porsche is so damn beautiful. Always loved these cars but there's something about that chopped roof that makes it look so sleek. Reminds me of the various outlaw 356s with chopped roofs.

We used to drag race back in the 70's on Instustrial Ave in downtown of Vancouver Canada. Muscle cars, beer, and gas was cheap. Both sides of the Ave lined with drunk teenagers - and drunk teenagers driving muscle cars going past them at 60 mph sideways. A miracle nobody ever got killed or injured

I first learned about this guy in the Los Angeles daily newspaper, so it is a wonder he managed to escape the law. I would imagine a guy that would learn German to compete better would be quite a rival. Until this information, I had no idea of the depth of the competition, I figured it was just a local five or six car thing, since they didn't get caught. Some of those Hollywood guys have the money to pick a performance level. It must have been quite an experience to have the equipment to be outlaw racing in the canyons and look over to see James garner. The road kings car club, out of Burbank, really benefitted from close proximity to the industry. I think it's fun that Tommy Ivo , a touring match race dragster driver/owner back in the smoking tire days, was a child actor in the first Mickey Mouse club TV show Up in the Los Angeles hills , during busy times going up to the rock store, a digital camera is set up on a big curve , and you can buy a motion shot as you went by from the guys with the camera, off of the internet. I just cruised by, top down, on a day where I wore cap and gloves to keep warm.

i still have a decent copy .of king of king mountain. my brother and i, both car lovers, still enjoy that old classic even all this time later..the movie captures the time period and passion of driving..and harry hamlin was The Man...perfect in the role...the movie has that Certain Something that still hits the right chords,even today.

I do not advocate street racing as I am a dry lake racer, but I ran across a quarter-mile meet on Mulholland where sleepers were drag racing full-blown car and motorcycle track machines for pinks. It was somewhat surrealistic simply because the sleepers were winning all of the races. Pinks were handed over. It definitely felt like a scene out of some crazy movie, but it was real. I was impressed which is not easy to do. Be safe!
