In another lifetime ago… I lived in a cabin above Baldy Village and rode both Mt Baldy Rd and Glendora Ridge Road almost every day to either meet up with my race team and train down below then ride back up or to ride out to the coast and back for training solo. I loved every minute of it except when it was raining or snowing. That was my pre- trike days of road bike racing.

This trike in my video is my old Terra Trike Tour... so I am not sure if the Path is the same... but mine would do that too. There are some brass bushings that will wear out over time on the old Terratrike designs like my old trike. When they get too warn your wheels will feel kinda wobbly like that. They're pretty inexpensive to replace. (they are designed to wear instead of the parts on the trike. I’m getting used to using both brakes. On y two wheeled bikes I’ve applied the rear brake in most stopping situations. I’ve reserved the fronts for emergency stopping.
@TrikeSquadron
@TrikeSquadron 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, on a two wheeler you do want to mostly apply rear brakes (or more than fronts) so you dont flip over the handlebars. On a trike you still want to moderate the two front brakes because you can tip forward on the fronts and hit hte boom or in severe cases flip you forward out of the seat. On bikes if you apply rear brakes too hard (lock up the wheel) you will skid sideways in the rear which most two wheel riders can handle, on a trike... a rear brake lockup would also slide the rear right or left like that, but it would be harder to control because the trike would tend to roll over when it got sideways and could be very dangerous. that is why trikes use the front brakes and if it has a rear brake it is just for "parking" brakes primarily. (can be used gently as a drag brake) ... so yes, takes a little getting used to using both front brakes on a trike, but when you learn the feel of them it can be very useful in turns to slow the inside of a turn wheel more than outside to maintain all three wheels on the ground! Ride safe and enjoy!

What is the typical speed on the trikes on just flat ground?
@TrikeSquadron
@TrikeSquadron 3 жыл бұрын
Well.. mostly depends on your conditioning more than the trike. In general they are probably a little slower than upright bikes, although there are some lighter weight, built for speed trikes that with the well conditioned riders can compete. If I am just cruisin' and doing distance I am probably averaging only 11-12.. if I am riding hard maybe in the 16mph range... sprinting ... 18 - 22 for short bursts or with some flat or downhill. Steep downhills... have had it to 52 mph!

I highly doubt this kind of racing is likely in unfared trikes (Velomobile - aerodynamic shelled trikes maybe) would have these kinds of speeds. 1) width of trikes would not make this kind of cutting and maneuvering as likely and the sustained speed... probably not. But I mean that could be just conditioning of the rider and familiarity with the trike and maybe something more like this could happen. 2) I don't see Trikes mixing with these kinds of diamond-frame riders. That being said there are some very lightweight, build for speed, high end trikes out there and fast riders - Just not a lot of them. Trikes are great for distance and comfort in doing distance. Not so sure about racing. I have however seen some very fast and competitive recumbent BIKE riders mix in with these same crit racers in Carson. Recumbent BIKES are a different animal. They are fast and agile. BUt there are also many diamondframe riders who do not want to have recumbents in their races, and the professional racers - recumbent bike designs are not even allowed.

@@TrikeSquadron thank you so much for your response. I used the video to show speed. And that is my question, could that level of rider on flat ground do that type of speed on a trike?
@TrikeSquadron
@TrikeSquadron 3 жыл бұрын
@@seanmelvin5115 Umm.... maybe? 1) Trikes in general are heavier, although there are some very high end lightweight ones. 2) Trikes have three points of wheel contact and thus a bit more friction and resistance on the road. 3) Trikes will have a slightly better aerodynamic shape, although adding a fairing of some sort can improve that a lot - but also adds some weight. 4) you can't stand up on the pedals and use gravity assist of your body weight on the pedals, it is all muscle power. So, while the aerodynamic advantage COULD be a big factor, most of the factors are against the trike being faster. In general, on flat ground, I can get up to a cruising speed of 18 - 20ish MPH cruising sprint for a while... I can maybe even hit 26 or more for a very short sprint. Someone in better shape might be able to go a bit faster or longer. I know that a Velomobile (fully enclosed trike in an aerodynamic faring) can cruise at 21 to maybe even 30mph for long distances on flat ground depending on the rider. Trikes will go very fast downhills and very slow up. I have been to 52 mph on a 10-12 percent down grade, but most of my climbing of grades will be more like 3 to 6mph when any momentum I brought into the hill is gone. Some of the faster lighter trikes out there are the ICE VTX or Vortex... and the Catrike 700 ... but if you really want faster speed over distance and don't mind the weight and enclosed temperature issues (depending on the climate you ride in) a velomobile is the ticket.
