LESSGGGOOOOOO. This is so good. I resonate with this so much because I've been playing guitar for about 8 years now (not self taught), but I wanted to go through the learning experience again, so I bought myself a lefty guitar and started self learning. Still on day 42, but its nice to see people on the grind likewise.

Not commenting on your playing, but please get a teacher. Violin is not something to learn by yourself. If you are investing years of your life into something, why spending all those years doing likely wrong techniques? I play pianos for decades and know music theory well and picked up violin about 3 years ago. I have an excellent teacher and there are subtle things she points out about violin playing that I would NEVER figure out myself despite my long familiarity with music. Violin playing is not just about making some sounds on the string. Please invest in a good teacher if you don’t want to spend years of your life going down the wrong path.
@Claire-wonderfullandАй бұрын
Hello thanks for your comment. I do agree with you that getting a teacher is super important for violin learning and I will find a teacher as long as I can. Currently I am at the very beginning of my career so it is financially difficult for me to get a teacher. I am sharing those videos to record my progress but NOT to say that a teacher is not necessary. And I do believe that everyone can start even though s/he doesn't have everything ready yet. btw, about your last remark, maybe it is too much to say "spend years of your life going down the wrong path". I don't know if you play music in your professional life. But for me, violin is my personal passion. Just playing the violin already brings me a lot of joy in my life. Thanks ☺️

@@Claire-wonderfulland I apologize since my last phrase does sound harsh 😆. I simply meant starting out without proper guidance we may spend years doing fundamental things wrong, and bad habits are very hard to fix. Take one simple thing as playing the D note on the A string. From other musicians’ perspective that may be as simple as pressing the third finger about two and a half steps from the nut on the A string to get the D. We violinists have to do that by throwing all first, second and third fingers in a constant “frame” on the string with some reference “feel” from the nut to get correct and consistent intonation. In other words, getting the B right with the first finger is more important than getting the D. The frame has to stay constant across strings while playing by swinging the elbow when needed. And then we should touch the strings with the inner side of our fingertips since the contact points would be narrower and more precise. And we don’t hit squarely on one string but kinda “in between” the strings to provide a frame of reference for other notes on the fingerboard… These and other things should be ingrained from day one. My teacher still gently picks apart and correct my playing in every session 😫. Without her would I have been able to still play some level 4, 5 pieces in my 3 years? Yes. Would I have played them in a properly trained manner? No. Sometimes I watched recitals by other students from some online violin academy and some proudly said they had spent 5, 6 years learning the instrument. While I wholeheartedly applaud their passion and efforts, I can’t help thinking what difference would those years have made if they had a good teacher. I wish you the best in your violin journey!

I agree with what you said about foundamental things. Of course it is better to have teacher who can point out mistakes immediately. However, not everyone can have a teacher maybe because of money or maybe because of locations. Thanks for your comment though. 🥰 Personally I will soon find a teacher for myself. I know I will need to correct many things about my playing but still I am happy that I started even when I didn't have a teacher.

Thanks for the realistic documentation of your progress. I am self taught myself. What I can't comprehend so far, is how will the left hand fingers eventually know where to be placed by themselves. I use stickers and play with them but when I try some blind tests, my fingers are obviously not in the perfect spot. I keep reading that the muscle memory will evolve, that I will be able to use my eat etc but it seems to me like out of this world. 😂
@Claire-wonderfulland2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. As you can see, I still have stickers on my fingerboard. To be honest, I haven't played without those stickers. When I am sightreading a new piece, i usually look at the music sheet rather than fingerboard. But even though I am not looking at the fingerboard, my fingers are usually placed by themselves at the correct place (i.e. on the sticker). Later on, I just remember all notes by heart so I can look at fingerboard and place my fingers at the right place. I think practicing scales is very important because by doing it, your left hand will eventually remember the space between fingers. But definitely you need to do a lot of practice in order to develop muscle memory. And about using ears, for me, I think it is about finding the right place (when there is no sticker on fingerboard) by listening the pitch and then making your fingers remember where they should be.

Keep it up, the first years are tough but it's worth it. For the left hand you just need time and a lot of scales. More important, you need to develop the muscles in your right hand, and not just hold the bow pasively. Nobody tells you that but that's where the sound is. Try playing rhythmical exercises with the bow, like series of 3 strokes, 4 strokes... That made the difference for me.

Be more charitable in your comment and offer actual constructive advice if you want people to actually improve. Using a metronome to practice a piece can help with being more in time, you can also count in your head and tap your foot along with it. And also learn the terms for different tempos (allegro, andante, etc.) if you haven’t yet.
@Claire-wonderfulland2 ай бұрын
Hello thanks for your suggestion about metronome. For me, this piece is the first one that involves 3rd position and I just started to learn shifting now long ago. On the day recording this video, I just learnt all notes and haven’t yet practiced more to get tempo right. Again thanks for your kind reply ☺️
@amirghorbanipour53463 ай бұрын
I think you have placed the sticker for the 4th finger a little higher... That's why your third position sounds out of tune... Please check with a tuner. Also try to curve your right pinky on the bow. Great progress👏👏. Keep it up!
@Claire-wonderfulland3 ай бұрын
Hi thanks ! I had some problems with my first violin. I checked with a tuner but still it sounded out of tune. But I changed to a new violin in the 4th month. I think it is better. For the bow hand, yes my pinky was straight all the time but I changed it in the 3rd or 4th month.

I agree that nerves can make it harder to play an instrument (or even sing). I haven’t done any recitals, however I tried a group holiday play-in and didn’t do very well, partly due to not being fast with reading and having had learned different versions of the same song. Also, when I was in college, I sang a solo and was so nervous that I quickly went off-key with a shaky voice.

Claire, the fact that you can produce a recognizable song, without sheet music, in front of people, self taught, on day 165 is astonishing to me. I've been playing the cello for YEARS and I've never played in front of a single person except my instructor. and *Dead Inside* 🤣🤣🤣
