What time of year was this? Just wondering about the creek height. I’m thinking it should be able to be crossed soon.
@michellebentley7159
@michellebentley7159 Ай бұрын
This was early July, but I was able to cross the creek at that same place 2 weeks earlier in mid June. At that point, it was just barely doable. I’m 5’8” and the water was above my waist and flowing fast from snowmelt. This time, the water was at least 2 feet higher from recent heavy rain runoff. It really just depends on snow levels and rain.

@@michellebentley7159 Thanks. Looks like a great trip. I’ve been to those areas a few times and the solitude is awesome, I bet the river height kept the crowds down. That’s a lot of mileage for each day and some rough terrain/elevation.

This might be a dumb question but, Is the CDT over lapping Waterton Vly Trail? I have been trying to map the CDT and been looking for sections to check out. I know where it is for the Collegates but not from NM to Pagosa. I like your videos.

Not a dumb question at all! I’m not familiar with the Waterton Valley Trail, but I use two apps that are great resources for the CDT: FarOut (purchase required of the CDT maps) and Gaia. Thanks for watching! I’m looking forward to thru hiking the entire CDT starting May 2025!

@@michellebentley7159 Awesome, I will have to watch, The CDT is my favorite trail to watch, I guess cause it is in Colorado. I have onX maps and it shows every hiking trail. I have to pay for it as well. Thank You. I did find out that the CDT and Waterton Vly Trail are the same.

Yes, ma’am. I will only be out for 3-8 days at a time and then resupply while on trail (either at a store or from a box I’ll have Steve mail me). I’ll carry all the same equipment as I did for this section. I’ll literally be wearing the same clothes for the entire hike and wash them when I get to towns.

Thank you SO much for making this video Michelle, I'm hopefully going to be following this route this July. I want to ask how safe you felt going up and particularly down the ridge after half moon lake. I'm a beginner backpacking and have never done terrain that rocky and steep before so just trying to see if this is something that should be left to advanced backpackers only.
@michellebentley7159
@michellebentley7159 2 ай бұрын
I think you could do it. The route finding is a little tricky on the Moon Lake side due to all the willow trees, but just take your time. The terrain is steep and rocky on the Rock Lake side, but there is a fairly defined trail to follow. Just plan your hike to give yourself plenty of time to not feel rushed. You don’t want to get caught up on that pass in the typical afternoon thunderstorm. That was my first time backpacking alone or on that type of cross country terrain. It was challenging, but I never felt unsafe. It is definitely worth the effort!

Beast of a day! You should be proud of your efforts. Footage was excellent. Commentary good. I really like that you added no music--I like the backcountry for the quiet. Critique: you could add a little more exposition, whether that is during the hike or adding text (labels) in post-production. Excellent that you keep the camera, on the main, focused on the scenery and not on you. Great job. Keep up the good work!
