Great fun and beautiful views! We were on top of Radical Hill last week, we came up from Montezuma on Deer Creek then went back to Montezuma on Saints John trail. From Radical hill there is a good view of the trails down in the valley and the trails coming down from Red Cone. From Red Cone there are good views of the trails going up to Radical Hill.

Amazing video!! Thanks for making it and the hard work that went into it. I've only done Webster pass from Montezuma to hwy285. For good reason I'm drivin a 2019 F150 FX4 6inch lift 35x12.5x 20 nitto ridge grapplers, V8, Bilstien basic suspension. It's a four door 145inch wheel base a whole 8inches longer than a gladiator. My lift and tires help with some break over issues but not enough for Red Cone or Radical lol. But Awesome video and thanks for making it and sharing!!

@mandersen
@mandersen 4 жыл бұрын
Hey - thanks for the comment - we rented the ATV from Outback ATV Rentals just outside of town and literally in their backyard they had trails that started from their driveway. I just checked their website and it was named "Turkey Springs- USFS Road 628, 629, 630" - so one of those is probably the trail we were on. Wish I could remember which one exactly, sorry.

Might I please tap the extensive knowledge and experience that your group/friends and you possess regarding the Jeep and tires. Since our Jeep Sahara also sees everyday use we would like to switch over to the BFA KO2 tires without lifting the Jeep. What is the largest size KO2 tires that you feel would handle reasonable off-road demands and provide a smooth and quiet ride on pavement without us modifying our Jeep? Many Thanks!
@mandersen
@mandersen 4 жыл бұрын
If you are using your stock wheels and you don't want to lift your jeep, the biggest tire size you can go for is a 33"x10"x17" tire. (This is the equivalent of 255/80/17) That size is the same width as most stock JK tires so there shouldn't be any issues.
@Tnapvrvideo
@Tnapvrvideo 4 жыл бұрын
I was waiting for my wife to return to the house with the Jeep to see exactly what we had for tires. Presently, we're running on 255/70/18. Does that change your biggest tire size to 255/80/18? and what would we gain going from 70 to 80 in terms of ride and overall handling? MANY THANKS!!! Please forgive how little I know about tires.
@Tnapvrvideo
@Tnapvrvideo 4 жыл бұрын
Great share!!! Might I ask, what tires do all of you use and is there a consensus on one brand/size or are many choices of equal performance? Also, can a Jeep with your recommended tires do these trails without a lift package? We have a 4-door 2017 Sahara. I am hoping that your recommended tires would be all that is needed for us to have these amazing trail experiences. Many Thanks!

What mods would a 5gen 4Runner need to make it up??
@mandersen
@mandersen 4 жыл бұрын
I have a buddy with a 5gen and he made it in stock form....however, I'd say a lift and tires would be highly advised. The hardest section in of this trail is when you're still in the trees, coming up the switchbacks before treeline. There's some pretty big ruts that if your tires aren't placed right could potentially be an issue....if you are running stock, skidplates would probably be a good idea...

Devildog 68 hey there. I use the garmin virb elite cameras. They are a bit old now (no 4K) but they still do a great job. It automatically overlays all that data into the video with its own software and then I export that out and edit the rest in iMovie. It’s worked great and the overlays are always big hit on KZfaq.

Great views from up there. I remember laying on the ground looking down into the valleys. You could see the sun shining in one and a front coming into another. The weather changes so drastically. I would go from a "t" shirt to a flannel shirt and then put on a down vest. Then back to just the t shirt. The air is so pure and there is no one else usually on those roads - at least 30 years ago. Amazing how food tastes so much better at the high altitudes - even reheated, day old pizza.
@mandersen
@mandersen 5 жыл бұрын
That is so cool that you were able to get up there 30+ years ago - I'm sure not much has changed up top but what you could see back then from what's been built up around there now would probably really surprise you! I agree, food tastes much better on top of the mtns! These trails just opened up recently here in CO as we had so much snow this winter, the high elevation trails took a lot longer to clear out.

Did this one back in 1991 when the trail had been closed since the 1970's. My co-pilot didn't read the map right and we didn't know what we were getting into until...it was too late. Couldn't back up. So we essentially slid our way down in, get this, a rental: a Mitsubishi Montero with street tires. Ridic. We fiiiiiinally made it down and had the best tasting meal of our lives in Telluride that night. And, we got free beers all night from all the locals who rightfully said we were the biggest (and bravest) idiots they'd ever met. ; )

How big of a vehicle is it possible to do this trail in? It would be inconvenient to have to reverse a 6wd army truck down from a halfway point or something, haha.
@MacClay8
@MacClay8 5 жыл бұрын
I was afraid of that. Not many trails are 6x6 compatible, haha. Would you be able to recommend one that is? I don't actually have one yet, but I'm in the planning stages of an Expeditionary vehicle project and that is (currently) the way I'm leaning. That I can use it first to haul dirt and rock is a bonus. Would this trail be doable in an 80's F-250? Obviously much longer than a Jeep, but not meaningfully wider. I didn't notice anywhere that required an extreme departure angle, and I want to say that's the 'weak' point on the truck as far as trails go.
@mandersen
@mandersen 5 жыл бұрын
MacClay8 the truck would be fine. A little tight but nothing it couldn’t handle. I think as long as the trail doesn’t have a lot of super tight switchbacks the 6x6 may work. I’d keep it off any shelf roads too since I’m sure it has a pretty wide stance. Your best bet would be to take a look at the website trailsoffroad.com. It will have ratings and very detailed pics of every trail they review. You will have to sign up for an account on that site but it’s free

You'd be totally fine - there's a small rocky section after the shelf road. This trail gets a "hard" rating from some of the books/sites b/c of the shelf road. If those don't bother you, you'd be fine.

How/where did you get all the telemetry/GPS data on the right side of the screen? I'm assuming some type of new fangled GPS unit? Amazing visuals. What drone do you use?
@mandersen
@mandersen 6 жыл бұрын
Hey there, thanks for the comment! That data comes from the cameras that I shoot with. I use Garmin Virb Elite cameras which have GPS sensors built into the cams. They record all of that data when it records and then you can overlay all (or just some) of the different data points into your vids. I love it and have been really happy with the quality of the vids (and the sensor data). I also use a DJI Mavic Pro drone - flying above tree line in the mtns is always a blast and just so freaking beautiful!

Boiled my brake fluid at a track event, is it ok to keep driving for a couple weeks? Braking seems ok just mushy.
@mandersen
@mandersen 6 жыл бұрын
No, I don't think that'd matter. I felt like I had to pump the brakes when trying to stop anytime AFTER they were boiled. On the way home for instance, I was on a highway, I kept it to about 40-45 mph and when traffic slowed, I noticed myself having to pump the brakes to get anything out of them. If your pedal goes to the floor, honestly, it's not worth the risk. A brake flush isn't that expensive and should probably be done asap to avoid an incident with you, your car, or worse yet, someone else around you.
