Not bad, coming from a guy who calls me a clown for polishing a bare 304 stainless steel jet-ski pipe on a wire wheel and tells me it will now rust out! haha. Thanks brother!

Some old snow blowers had into the 90s had a crude system of making a machine easier to turn but you were to lose traction on one wheel that way. Andy would only work for people that take care of their machines and make sure to anti seize the axle solar wheel doesn't seize to the shaft. There would either be multiple holes in the shaft or you could just simply push the wheel in slightly and stick the linchpin in just the hole in the shaft not the hole in the wheel and it would allow one wheel to free spin. Typically like to have traction on both Wheels put the system is very handy for the off-season.

The older one is a 1979 model made on the 145th day of 1979, which was Friday May 25, 1979. The newer one isn't a Chinese made Craftsman. It appears to be an MTD "247" model prefix made machine. Those were assembled in the USA. MTD was bought out by Stanley Black and Decker a few years ago. At the time your machine was made, SBD did not own them.

My only regret about my Toro is the fact I was too cheap to pony up the extra cash for the crank chute control when I bought it over 20 years ago. It works just as good now as the day I bought it, has never clogged once and has required zero maintenance except for changing the spark plug once. The primer bulb has just now finally dry rotted but that's to be expected for something that has been in use for 20+ years. In 1999, there was no KZfaq and no easy way to compare these things. I ALMOST bought a Simplicity because it had the chute control -it even came with an unclogger tool and handy clips to mount it on the side. That was a good thing for people who bought one of those (or ANY other 2 stage machine from that time), because those machine's perform abysmally and clog often. Slushy snow just dribbles down the side of those machines, whereas the Toro throws half melted slush even farther away than fresh snow.

Agreed. I have 7 blowers at current. The 3650 is a no compromise beast that just tears through everything. It vibrates less than an HS720 and is quieter, but the need for mixing gas and oil and the fact that you end up smelling like a 250cc motocross race are the only detractors.

I have a Murray built Craftsman snowblower from the 90s. Quality-wise I think it's fall somewhere in between those two. Then what's on the MTD build Craftsman even the belly pan that covers the drive disk is thicker metal than on today's machines. But I doubt it's as heavy as your drift breaker.

why didn't you show a close up of the newer machine, it was also made in the USA in Tupelo Mississippi. Someone down further in the comments is correct with their comment that the market would not pay for a snow thrower built like the older machine. Cars are five times the price they were in the seventies, but the market won't accept any price increases on power equipment for some reason...

I had a similar 7 HP 24" Craftsman Model 536.918300 that died about 3 years ago. Replaced it with a 9 HP 29" Craftsman that I wish I had replaced the engine on the old one. Like you mentioned they were built like a tank. With the 14" impeller and large discharge chute, very rarely did it clog. The new one is very frail and easily clogs. Yesterday I installed some rubber flaps on the impeller to see if it will help with the clogging. Expecting snow today, so will find out if the mod works.

Almost every snowblower and power mower sold today is made in So Carolina, at American Yard products. If you order enough of one model, they will put any name you want on it. If you want parts for almost any mower or blower check the parts avail at American Yard products. Usually they have everything you want at a lower price than the company who's name is on your machine

I have had my Toro 3650 since 2002 and it works like a charm in any type and depth of snow or slush. I have learned to place it in front of a small space heater so that no moisture will freeze around the carb. and always keep it full with gas that has a bit of dry gas in it. I also place a small plastic bag with a few small holes over the gas cap so that the vent spaces do not get clogged. I also spray vegetable oil inside the discharge chute to avoid any clogs. Today, 12-17-2020, we had 12+ in. of snow in Central Mass. and it handled it with no problems. I do have it serviced and checked every year.

Where are 12 inches of snow on the driveway? It looks to be 4 to maybe 6. I just used an hs720 on a real 12 inch snowfall with bigger drifts and i broke my balls pushing it. It is out of it's league over 5 or 6 inches. My neighbor helped me with his 5.5 horsepower? and it was no sweat. I wish i hadn't bought this Honda cuz it is too much like work. I came in all sweated up. I see reviews that claim that it is the greatest, but it seems like i am lifting weights whenever i use it. What am i missing?

With snowfalls that high, you either want a 2 stage or to do partial passes with the snowblower. Partial passes may take longer since you're only taking in half of the snow but it'll be easier on you and the snowblower.

It IS a single stage. They just aren't rated for a foot. You probably need a two stage machine for that. I have a Toro 721 single stage with a longer driveway. I like to let the snow build to about five inches and go take care of it. That way, it's not hard on the machine. I do think the Toro MAY pull itself a bit better than the Honda. I'm a fan of both machines. I do like the chute controls.

Your "newer" one (now about 12 years old at the time of this post in 2020 if you bought it three years prior to 2011 when you did this video) isn't a Chinese made unit. It appears to be a MTD made "247" model prefix assembled/made in the USA units with a Tecumseh Snow King engine. Your older one was also a "536" made product, but likely made by AMF/Western Tool in the 1970s for Sears. Briggs and Stratton owns both companies now and they provide support on both.
